PERSONS AND INCIDENTS. IT is deemed proper in this connection to give a few personal sketches of Union Soldiers, and incidents of the War of more or less prominent interest, the only regret being that lack of space forbids such extension of the chapter as would admit a much larger number of such. JAMES BLAIR STEEDMAN was born in Chillisquaque Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, July 29, 1817, and died at Toledo, October 8, 1883. He was of Scotch parentage, his parents dying while he was yet a boy, leaving him the eldest of three children. At the age of 15 he became an apprentice in the office of the Lewisburg (Penn.) Democrat . Two years later he went to Louisville, Kentucky, where he worked at printing for a time, but soon joined General Sam. Houston's expedition for the independence of Texas. Returning to Pennsylvania, he was employed on the Public Works there. In 1838 he came to Northwestern Ohio, first stopping at Napoleon, where he soon became publisher of the Northwestern Democrat , and was married with Miss Miranda Stiles, then recently from New Jersey. Not long thereafter he was a contractor on the Wabash and Erie Canal. In 1847-8 he served two terms in the Ohio House of Representatives. In 1849, with a party from this State, he made the overland trip to California in search for gold, but returned the year following, and in 1852 was elected as member of the Board of Public Works, and in 1855 was reelected to that position, serving most of the time as President of the Board. In December, 1857, lie was chosen as Congressional Printer. lie was elected Major-General of the Fifth Division, Ohio Militia, in 1857, holding that office until the breaking out of the Rebellion. Between 1857 and 1861, he was for sometime the Editor of the Toledo

568 - HISTORY OF SENECA COUNTY CHAPTER XXI. LIBERTY TOWNSHIP PRIOR to 1832, anal dating back to 1820, this division of the county was known as Town 3 north, Range 14 east. In the latter year it was surveyed into quarter sections by J. T. Worthington, who made his headquarters at James Montgomery's home in Pleasant Township. In June 1832 the commissioners granted the prayer of petitioners, residents of what is now Liberty, asking to be set off from Seneca Township, and organized. In April, 1833, the first meeting was held. The petition was presented by John L. Flack. In 1830 the whole number of inhabitants in old Seneca Township was only 369, of which number only a dozen or so belonged to this portion of it. In 1840 the population of this township was 1,084, and forty years later, 2,157; a reference to the statistics at the close of this chapter will point out its increase in general wealth. Organic, and Official . -Liberty Township was established June 5, 1832, and the first annual election held April 1, 1833. The officers elected were E. W. Brook, Jacob Kime and John Rosenberger, trustees; John Craun, clerk; Eben. Conway and Nicholas Rumbaugh, constables; Adam Flack, Isaac Hartsock, James Judson, Levi Crissy and Joseph H. Conway, supervisors. The records from 1833 to 1863 are either lost or in such a bad condition as to leave a list LIBERTY TOWNSHIP. - 569

Bisbee Cemetery "K"
Located in Bisbee, a short distance past the mine near Route 80 from Bisbee to Douglas. It is just north of Route 80 on a side road into and area that used to be called Lowell. There is confusion because there is a set of records on a cemetery called Lowell Evergreen that had 2158 names in the records. It turns out that only 17 were not dupicates. If there was any possiblity of the names not being duplicates, I left it up to the reader. Data on the cemetery is drawn from four sources (1) an index of the old part of the cemetery supplied by Mrs. Lillian Banchi (2) a survey of the entire cemetery made by Mrs. Banchi (3) records of the Hubbard and Dugan mortuaries and (4) a publication of the Arizona State Genealogical Society in 1969, compiled by Mrs. Thomas Salyer from the preceding 3 sources. In the 1879 History of Venango County, PA it mentions that Richard Monjar settled in Irwin twp. in 1797. "He came from Westmoreland county, and in the same year after, his father came and settled." Another History said Richard was a native of Maryland. I think richard's father might have been John Monjar. I am searching for any thing about this family.
