Douglas County Colorado
Marriages 1864 – 1925
These marriages were recorded in the record books of the Douglas County Clerk offices, they were originally transcribed by Mrs. Donald K. Anderson of the Smoky Hill Trail Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in 1982. Reformatting done by Chuck Herman in 2002.
Originally the license showed the location and witnesses to the marriage, but in 1881 the location and witnesses were dropped, witnesses and location are shown when present. If no recorded marriage took place, this is shown in the comments as “Lic issued” and date. All abbreviations are as they appeared in the records. Simon and Edna had children Mary Ann (b. 1838), William (Bill) W. (1840-1923), Francis (Frank) M. (b. 1844), Ophelia C. (b. 1847) and Polly. From The History of Coleman County and Its People. JOHN WILLIAM WESLEY FAMILY by Minnie Burkett. John William Wesley was the son of Edna (Burkett) and Simon Wesley Cockrell, (born March 1840) in Gonzales County. He dropped the name Cockrell when he came with his wife Laura Amanda (Gilbert) Wesley (April 1854 June 19, 1919) and children to Coleman County in 1879 and was hence forth known as John William Wesley. They married November 25, 1868 in Fayette County. His family was on the census June 15, 1880. John William was 39, wife 26, Albert 9, John Bartholomew 8, Berry 6, Mary (Mamie) 3, and Arthur 1. Arthur, born November 28, 1878; so this establishes their arrival. Other children born to them after they came to Coleman County were Ophelia Clementine, Edna Burkett, Myrtle Myra, and Edgar Eugene. On July 18, 1879 John bought 138 acres of land which lay between the Henderson place and the Knox Ranch, now known as the Gould Place. About 1890, the family moved to Burkett; John William Wesley and W.L. Gould put in the first cotton gin at Burkett the same year. About 1914 he bought a lot and house in Cross Plains, and lived there until Laura died in 1919. He never again lived on his farm in Burkett, but the land remained in his possession until his death, October 26, 1923. He willed all of his property to one daughter, Ophelia Clementine Wesley and she sold the farm in Coleman County to O. L. McKinney in 1946. Both John and Laura are buried at Burkett.

Links to More Cochran Family and Nellie Bly Information
Nineteen great-granddaughters of Robert Cochran (who came to the US from County Derry, Ireland, and died in 1814) and Catherine Risher Cochran (who may have been born in 1783 in Baltimore, MD, and died after 1830 near Apollo, PA) gathered in about 1892 for this photograph. The Robert and Catherine Cochran family lived near Apollo, Armstrong County, PA, first in Hannastown (Westmoreland County), then Crawford’s Mills. After Robert Cochran's death, Catherine Risher Cochran moved to Warren, PA (later renamed Apollo). She is listed in the first separate assessment list of the town of Warren (then in Allegheny township) in 1830 thus: Catherine Cochran, lot No. 34, 1 house, 1 head of cattle, $31.
All these women are either nieces or cousins of the pioneer woman journalist Nellie Bly (Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman), b. May 5, 1864, d. January 27, 1923. Please use the links at left to see more information about Nellie Bly and other Cochran family members.
