Introduction
In his introduction to the Unpublished Correspondence between William Kirby (1817-1906) and Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Lorne Pierce recognizes a curiously close connection between some important events of Kirby’s times and the landmarks of his early life. The year in which Kirby left his native Yorkshire for the United States—1832—was also the year of the first Reform Bill and the death of Sir Walter Scott. "For the rest of his life," observes Pierce, "Kirby sought escape from encroaching reform." It was a quest that took him, after seven years in the United States, to NIagara-on-the-Lake where he was to become the "spokesman, interpreter, and bulwark of the Tory and Loyalist idea" (14, 17). For his most extended poem— The U.E.: A Tale of Upper Canada , published at Niagara in 1859—Kirby’s principal model was Marmion: A Tale of Flodden Field , Scott’s most successful poetic foray into the feudal world of the Waverley Novels . "Sir Walter Scott? Everywhere and always" (19) writes Pierce of Scott’s influence on the development of "anything native to Canadian romance" precisely because of its highly successful use of Scott (Klinck, "Literary Activity" 159).

Who Was Who?
Here you will find brief biographies of prominent people involved in the formation of the Co-operative Movement. The text is taken from Arnold Bonner's "British Co-operation" (Co-operative Union 1970), Stan Newens' revised version of W.H. Brown's "Pathfinders" (1997) and other sources. A compressed account of so large and complex a movement as the Co-operative Movement forces out of consideration the individuals, even the leading personalities, who constituted and made it. Yet the Movement's ideals, principles, systems of organisation and administration originated in the minds of individuals. It was individuals also who thought, decided, formed, established, developed, discussed and debated. These brief biographical sketches are intended to give some idea of the manner of men and women who played important parts in the Co-operative Movement. It is impossible to deal with all, those selected are those whom students most frequently desire to know something about. In some cases, eg, Robert Owen or the Webbs, it is easy to get a good deal of information, but in most of those dealt with here it is difficult, which also accounts for the inclusion of some. Acland, Sir Arthur, 1847-1926

CHIPPAWA CRYSTAL BEACH FONTHILL FORT ERIE ... VINELAND CHIPPAWA Fort Chippawa 1791
Built to protect the southern end of the Niagara portage road, Fort Chippawa (also called Fort Welland) originally consisted of a log blockhouse surrounded by a stockade. Before the fort was abandoned sometime after the 1812-14 war, a barracks, storehouse, officers' quarters and earthworks had been added. (In the park on the north bank of the Welland River (near the site of the former fort), Chippawa) The Founding of Chippawa
Situated on Chippawa Creek at the end of the portage road from Queenston , Chippawa retained its original name even though the creek was renamed the Welland River in 1793. Severely damaged during the War of 1812, the village revived following construction of the first Welland Canal . (In Cummington Square, near the former town hall, Chippawa) The Raid on Fort Schlosser 1813
At daybreak on July 5, 1813 a British and Canadian force crossed the Niagara River from Chippawa to attack the American depot on the opposite shore. The success of this raid inspired a series of similar incursions along the frontier. (In King's Bridge Park, Chippawa) The Church of the Holy Trinity
The first Anglican church on this site was burned by supporters of William Lyon Mackenzie following the Rebellion of 1837. The present church was built in the 1840s and over the next few decades numbered among its worshippers
