The Jungle Books
Nobel Prize Winners (1907)
Author Info: Rudyard Kipling
Since he wrote these stories during the several years he spent in Brattleboro, VT, we of the North Country have a particular affinity for Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Books . The most familiar are the Mowgli tales, basis for the very good Disney movie. Mowgli is an Indian infant who is lost in the jungle after Shere Khan (the tiger) kills his family. Bagheera (the black panther) places him with a wolf family that has a newborn litter. Mowgli's new "parents" and Bagheera and Baloo (the brown bear) sponsor him for membership in the Wolf Pack and, much to Shere Khan's chagrin, he is admitted. Mowgli is raised according to Jungle Law, but all the while Shere Khan is plotting his revenge and ingratiating himself with the younger wolves. Eventually, he leads a rebellion against Akela, the pack's aging leader and attacks Mowgli, who beats him away with a burning firebrand. In these and the several other Mowgli storiesthere are some prequelsKipling strikes a nice balance between anthropomorphizing the animals and understanding Mowgli's natural superiority. Also appearing in this collection is a story I've loved since I first saw the Classic Cartoon version Rikki Tikki Tavi . It tells the story of an intrepid young mongoose and his life or death battle to protect an Indian villa from a couple of particularly unpleasant cobras. Rikki Tikki Tavi has always seemed to me to be one of the great heroes in all of literature.

If
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by wating,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream and not make dreams your master;
If you can think and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumpth and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same: If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings, And never breathe a word about your loss: If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

Baden-Powell needed an concept around which to build the younger boy program of Scouting. He found it with a popular book by the repected British author, Rudyard Kipling. Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India. From 1892 to 1889, he was on the editorial staff of the Civil and Military Gazette, the daily newspaper of Lahore, India, for which he wrote short stories. In 1892, he married an American girl, Caroline Balestier. Many of his first writings were about the British soldier in India. The Jungle Book was written in 1894. It was originally published in chapter form in the American children's magazine, Saint Nicholas. From 1892 to 1896, the Kiplings lived in Brattleboro, Vermont on an estate belonging to Mrs. Kipling's family. In the pleasant New England surroundings, he wrote Captains Courageous and the two Jungle Book s. These books earned him the Nobel prize in Literature in 1907. Kipling was the author of "The Scout's Patrol Song" which was the official Boy Scout song. Part I of the 1908 booklet, "Scouting For Boys" included a condensed version of Kipling's Kim . He was also the father of a Scout and later a comissioner in the British Scouting program.. In 1924, he attended a rally of 6 thousand Wolf Cubs at the Imperial Jamboree at Wembley where he witnessed what Baden-Powell had made of his writings..
