Henry Kingsley
Profile
Born at Barnack, Northamptonshire. A troubled writer, born of middle class parents, and the youngest of five sons, Henry was fond of mixing in literary circles with Aldous Huxley, Matthew Arnold, George Meredith and Lewis Carroll and his brother, Charles Kingsley, also a novelist. Henry, although talented, was a spendthrift and of considerable mixed fortunes. After spending time at Oxford more on social activities than study he went to Australia for five years, accepting a legacy as a way of removing his debts, and cutting himself off from his family. It was here he based Recollections of Geoffrey Hamlyn (1859) to popular success, using his first hand experience to depict life in the new colony of Australia, illustrating the perils of the life in the bush, with bushrangers, forest fires and drought. His next novel Ravenshoe (1862), set against the Crimean War, was also well received. On returning to England he married his cousin Sarah Haselwood, who suffered from ill health throughout their marriage. During this time Henry's financial fortunes also declined. He continued to entertain his literary friends which drained his finite resources and in 1869 he moved to Edinburgh, and taking over editorship of the Daily Review - a voice of the Free Church party. It was during this time he wrote Stretton Stretton is an absorbing Victorian novel which moves between Church Stretton and Church Pulverbatch in Shropshire to the borders of the British Empire in India. Kingsley wrote about events in England and India to contrast peace and war situations, but the novel mainly focuses on Eleanor, a feisty, kind-hearted woman with a biting wit and a "radiant beauty". However, despite her beauty she believes that being married to her 800 acre farm in Church Pulverbatch is more desirable than marriage to a man.

HENRY KINGSLEY
KINGSLEY, HENRY (1830-1876), English novelist, younger brother of Charles Kingsley, was born at Barnack, Northamptonshire, on the 2nd of January 1830. In. 1853 he left Oxford, where he was an undergraduate at Worcester College, for the Australian goldfields. This venture, however, was not a success, and after five years he returned to England. He achieved considerable popularity with his Recollections of Geoffrey Hamlyn (1859), a novel of Australian life. This was the first of a series of novels of which Rave-nshoe (1861) and The Hillyars and The Burtons (1865) are the best known. These stories are characterized by much vigour, abundance of incident, and healthy sentiment. He edited for eighteen months the Edinburgh Daily Review, for which he had acted as war correspondent during the Franco-German War. He died at Cuckfield, Sussex, on the 24th of May 1876. Kingsley, Charles Kingsley, Charles, , English author and clergyman. Ordained in 1842, he became vicar of Eversley in Hampshire in 1844. From 1848 to 1852 he published tracts advocating Christian socialism . These views were embodied in his first two novels, Alton Locke (1850) and Yeast (1851), both of which deal with contemporary social problems. In his subsequent novels, including Hypatia Westward Ho! (1855), and Hereward the Wake (1866), he used historical settings to communicate his ideas. A statement denigrating the Roman Catholic clergy, made by Kingsley in an article, started a controversy with John Henry Newman that resulted in Newman's famous Apologia. In 1859, Kingsley was made chaplain to Queen Victoria. From 1860 to 1869 he was professor of modern history at Cambridge and in 1873 was appointed canon of Westminster. Several collections of his sermons were published during his lifetime. Included among his other notable work is the well-known children's book The Water Babies See Letters and Memories (ed. by his wife, 2 vol., 1877, repr. 1973); biographies by M. F. Thorp (1937, repr. 1969), U. Pope-Hennessy (1948, repr. 1973), and B. Colloms (1975); study by A. J. Hartley (1981); S. Harris
