Charles Kingsley The Water Babies Westward Ho! Introduction
Novelist and historian, son of a clergyman, was b. , a drama, of which the heroine is St. Elizabeth of Hungary. Two novels followed, Yeast (1848) and Alton Locke Hypatia , in which the conflict of the early Christians with the Greek philosophy of Alexandria is depicted; it was followed in 1855 by Westward Ho , perhaps his most popular work; in 1857 by Two Years Ago , and in 1866 by Hereward the Wake. At Last (1870), gave his impressions of a visit to the West Indies. His taste for natural history found expression in Glaucus, or the Wonders of the Shore (1855), and other works. The Water Babies is a story for children written to inspire love and reverence of Nature. K. was in 1860 appointed to the Professorship of Modern History at Cambridge, which he held until 1869. The literary fruit of this was Roman and Teuton (1864). In the same year he was involved in a controversy with J. H. 29. CHARLES KINGSLEY
Charles Kingsley. Kingsley, Charles (18191875), English clergyman, poet and novelist, was born on the 12th of June 1819, at Holne vicarage, Dartmoor, Devon.
http://21.1911encyclopedia.org/K/KI/KINGSLEY_CHARLES.htm
CHARLES KINGSLEY
KINGSLEY, CHARLES Both as a writer and in his personal intercourse with men, Kingsley was a thoroughly stimulating teacher. As with his own teacher, Maurice, his influence on other men rather consisted in inducing them to think for themselves than in leading them to adopt his own views, never, perhaps, very definite. But his healthy and stimulating influence was largely due to the fact that he interpreted the thoughts which were stirring in the minds of many of his contemporaries. As a preacher he was vivid, eager and earnest, equally plainspoken and uncompromising when preaching to a fashionable congregation or to his own village poor. One of the very best of his writings is a sermon called The Message of the Church to Working Men; and the best of his published discourses are the Twenty-five Village Sermons which he preached in the early years of his Eversley life. As a novelist his chief power lay in his descriptive faculties. The descriptions of South American scenery in Westward Ho!, of the Egyptian desert in Ilypatia, of the North Devon scenery in Two Years Ago, are among the most brilliant pieces of wordpainting in English prose-writing; and the American scenery is even more vividly and more truthfully described when he had seen it only by the eye of his imagination than in his work Al Last, which was written after he had visited the tropics. His sympathy for children taught him how to secure their interests. His version of the old Greek stories entitled The Heroes, and Water-babies and Madam How and Lady Why, in which he deals with popular natural history, take high rank among books for children.

Charles Kingsley (1819-1875) published since 1900. While such bibliographic citation databases as MLA Bibliography (Modern Language Association) and ABELL (Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature) are essential resources of Kingsley scholarship, they do not provide abstracts or summaries. Moreover, the MLA database only dates from 1922 and ABELL from 1920. While the bibliographies on the present site are by no means intended to be comprehensive, they represent a strong selection of the major works of Kingsley scholarship published in the twentieth century and later. • Charles Kingsley (1819-1875).

On lui doit, parmi plus de 130 récits, Peter the Whaler et The Three Commanders
