My parents raised me to believe that I could be anything I wanted to be and do anything I wanted. They also taught me that the color of a persons skin didn't matter. This may sound very naive to you. But that is always the way I have felt. We are all created equal in the eyes of the Lord. We are all His children. Remember the song from when you were younger all the children of the world....... Red, and yellow, black and white Jesus loves the little children of the world." Some people are born "color blind". Oh, that we could raise our children to be "color blind in their heart". Let us strive to be the kind of people who look at the inside and only see the best in others. As a Christian I am glad that the Lord loves me unconditionally. He sees my heart and knows the secret thoughts along with my past BUT He loves us in spite of it all. "Beloved, let us love one another. For love is of God and anyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God for God is Love. So beloved, let us love one another."
Do YOU know your neighbors? God's Word says to "Love your neighbor as yourself". WOW. If we don't even know our neighbors what does that say about ourselves. A real example of a GOOD Neighbor is the story of the GOOD Samaritan that Jesus told us. Luke 10:29-37

Context for "I Have a Dream" Content for "I Have a Dream" "I Have a Dream" has been misconstrued and sentimentalized by some who focus only on the dream. The first half of the speech does not portray an American dream but rather catalogues an American nightmare. In the manner of Old Testament prophets, Frederick Douglass's "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" oration and Vernon Johns, King excoriated a nation that espoused equality while forcing blacks onto "a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity." Context for "I've Been to the Mountaintop" By the time of King's final speech, the heyday of the civil rights movement was over. Large riots in major cities and the divisive issue of the Vietnam War had shattered the liberal consensus for civil rights and created an atmosphere of crisis. , civil rights leader. One of the world's best-known advocates of nonviolent social change, King was born in Atlanta. As a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta, at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, and at Boston University, he deepened his understanding of theological scholarship and of Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent strategy for social change. He received a Ph.D. in theology in 1955 and became pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. In December 1955, after Montgomery civil rights activist Rosa Parks refused to obey the city's policy mandating segregation on buses, black residents launched a bus boycott and elected King as president of the newly formed Montgomery Improvement Association. As the boycott continued during 1956, King gained national prominence for his exceptional oratorical skills and personal courage. His house was bombed, and he and other boycott leaders were convicted on charges of conspiring to interfere with the bus company's operations. But in December 1956 Montgomery's buses were desegregated when the Supreme Court declared Alabama's segregation laws unconstitutional. In 1957, seeking to build upon the success in Montgomery, King and other black ministers founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (

Martin Luther King, Jr.

  • African American minister who worked so that all people would be treated fairly helped bring about changes in laws through peaceful means national holiday in January to celebrate his accomplishments
Martin Luther King Jr. was born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta Georgia. His father, Martin Luther King, was as Baptist minister and his mother, Alberta King, was a schoolteacher. His birth name is Michael Luther Kings Jr. but he was later renamed Martin and his father called him M.L. Martin was so smart he skipped the 9th and 12th grades and entered Morehouse College when he was 15. He decided to become a minister and went on to earn a Ph.D. from Boston University. It was in Boston that he met Coretta Scott. They went on to have four children. King moved to Montgomery Alabama to become the pastor of a Baptist church. This was in 1955 and the civil rights movement was in its earliest stages. The civil rights movement was waged to bring equality to all people regardless of their religion, race or gender. In 1955 King became involved in civil rights activities with a protest of Montgomery's segregated bus system. That year, a black passenger named Rosa Parks was arrested for disobeying a city law requiring that blacks give up their seats on buses when white people wanted to sit in their seats or in the same row. Black leaders in Montgomery urged blacks to boycott (refuse to use) the city's buses.

Bibliography for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Prepared by Sharron L. McElmeel Martin Luther King, Jr. was born January 15, 1929, and assassinated in 1968. He dreamed of a world blind to the lines of color. He worked unceasingly and peacefully to obtain that goal. His peaceful resistance was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, who led the peaceful struggle for India's independence from Great Britain. King's work was helped in the civil rights movement by such people as Rosa Parks who served as a catalyst for the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott. The following books will help provide information about King and the others who were important in King's work in the 20th-century Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Archives Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) Message from Commissioner Raymond Kelly On Monday, January 15, the nation will celebrate the birth, life, and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the King holiday observance. Dr. King's compelling vision of an America free of the bias, intolerance, and injustice that was so at odds with its founding principle of equality captured the moral conscience of our nation and our world. He depicted that vision most clearly in his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., nearly four decades ago. Then, Dr. King's words and his other speeches and essays were catalysts for historic social change in America. Today, they remind us that despite vast progress, there is still much to be done in our workplace, in our communities, and in our society at large to advance his goals. They remind us that equality and justice can only take firm root through a vigilant examination of our conscience and reflection on the basic human dignity Dr. King espoused. I hope every Customs employee will take a few moments over the next days to remember the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy.
