JOYCE KILMER
Alfred Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918) was a young American poet who suffered a tragic death at the age of 31.
His poem Trees is probably the most quoted poem in American history.
Joyce Kilmer was born in Brunswick, New Jersey, and married Aline Murray on June 9, 1908. They had five children - Kenton, Michael, Deborah, Rose, and Christopher. His first collection of poetry, Summer of Love , was published in 1911, and was well received. However, it was the publication of Trees that established his reputation as a major American poet. Trees was first published in August 1913 in Poetry Magazine, and then became the title poem in his second collection, Trees and Other Poems, in 1914. He followed in 1917 with Main Street . A Catholic convert, his poetry exhibits humility and a deep respect for God and nature.
Kilmer joined the National Guard and was transferred to France in October of 1917, where he was shot and killed in the line of duty on July 30, 1918. He was buried there at Oise-Aisne, Fere-eu-Tardenois, and received the Croix de Guerre of France.
We include the poem Trees; The Singing Girl from Main Street; and his last poem, written on the battlefield in France during World War I, The Peacemaker, written six weeks before his death.

Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918) PRAYER OF A SOLDIER IN FRANCE M y shoulders ache beneath my pack
(Lie easier, Cross, upon His back). I march with feet that burn and smart
(Tread, Holy Feet, upon my heart) . Men shout at me who may not speak
(They scourged Thy back and smote Thy cheek). I may not lift a hand to clear
My eyes of salty drops that sear. (Then shall my fickle soul forget
Thy Agony of Bloody Sweat?) My rifle hand is stiff and numb
(From Thy pierced palm red rivers come). Lord, Thou didst suffer more for me
Than all the hosts of land and sea. So let me render back again
This millionth of Thy gift. Amen.

Steps lead from the water to a classical garden with a small figural statue on a pedestal and tall cypress trees frame the deep blue sky. The poem is written in calligraphy in the lower portion. Both sections are set within lines of metallic gold and deep blue border. The poem reads as follows: “I think that I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks to God all day

Trees
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

As Winds That Blow Against a Star
Now by what whim of wanton chance
And feet that shod in light should dance
But rays from Heaven, white and whole,
And tears but nourish, in your soul,
The darts of toil and sorrow, sent
As foolish and as impotent

Joyce Kilmer [1886-1918] Exercise AK L2 AK L3 Most students study this poem at some time in their early education, and this appeared to be an appropriate place to put it. In addition to an interesting exercise on S/V/C patterns, the poem should provide for an interesting discussion of ellipsis. Does the simplifying effect of the ellipsis reinforce the presentation of the tree as child-like and simple? Why does the speaker call himself a "fool"?

But
only God can make a tree Notes 1. The period at the end of line two results in a dump to long term memory ( See the psycholinguistic model .) and makes fragments of stanzas two through five. They are easily connected by readers, however, because stanzas two through four begin with "tree" which functions as an appositive to the "tree" in the first stanza. The appositives are the result of the ellipsis of "I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as" in stanzas two through four. In stanza five, the ellipsis progresses further to include "a tree," thus leaving only two adjectival subordinate clauses.
Post-positioned adjectives
are a Level Five construction, but since "lovely" is the only word that has not been analyzed, I'll note here that that is how it functions it is the reduction of "a poem *that is* lovely as a tree."
