German Gunfire So you know I’m not so happy in my job these days on account of having to repeat myself and repeat and repeat, every quarterly cycle every year it’s the same same same. Routine scours my brainpan with steel wool. I’m empty, I’m finished and empty. What I need is a new stew to feed on, one full of savory root vegetables (or are those meats, or marrows?) and strange herbs; one or two ingredients that sing when plucked from the ground ought to do it. Truly, I need a change.
Trees
I look out the bus window on the ride back from Boston and the thought returns: I love
trees. Each one is different, they’re all almost equally lovely, they take such a long time to grow, they don’t talk on the phone Could I possibly, somehow, I wonder, get a new job writing copy for trees?

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
The air is like a butterfly
With frail blue wings
The happy earth looks at the sky
And sings. It is stern work, it is perilous work to thrust your hand in the sun
And pull out a spark of immortal flame to warm the hearts of men. For nothing keeps a poet In his high singing mood Like unappeasable hunger For unattainable food. There is no peace to be taken With poets who are young, For they worry about the wars to be fought and the songs that must be sung. Published Sources for Quotations Above:

Prayer of a Soldier in France
My shoulders ache beneath my pack (Lie easier, Cross, upon His back).
I march with feet that burn and smart (Tread, Holy Feet, upon my heart).
Men shout at me who may not speak (They scourged Thy back and smote Thy cheek).
I may not lift a hand to clear My eyes of salty drops that sear.
(Then shall my fickle soul forget Thy agony of Bloody Sweat?)
My rifle hand is stiff and numb (From Thy pierced palm red rivers come).
Lord, Thou didst suffer more for me Than all the hosts of land and sea.
So let me render back again This millionth of Thy gift. Amen.

Updated - Saturday, 27 September, 2003 Alfred Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918), the noted American poet killed in action during World War I, was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on 6 December 1886. Educated first at Rutgers College in 1904 and then at Columbia University, Kilmer worked from 1909-12 - after a brief stint as a salesman - for Funk and Wagnall, helping to edit their Standard Dictionary Although Kilmer exhibited early signs of radicalism and was indeed something of a socialist, he nevertheless retained a deep religious sense throughout his life. A one-time Literary Editor of The Churchman newspaper, an Anglican journal, Kilmer himself converted to Catholicism in 1913. In June 1908 Kilmer married Aline; they had five children. In 1911 Kilmer's first volume of poetry, entitled A Summer of Love , was published to acclaim. In 1913 he joined The New York Times , also writing for The Nation and The New York Times Sunday Magazine . The fame his writings brought him earned him an entry in Who's Who Although married and with children Kilmer volunteered for service in 1917 following America's entry into World War I . Enlisting as a private with the 7th Regiment, National Guard in New York, he sought and received a transfer shortly afterwards to 165th Infantry (part of the famed Rainbow Division).

In alien earth, across a troubled sea,
His body lies that was so fair and young.
    His mouth is stopped, with half his songs unsung;
His arm is still, that struck to make men free.
But let no cloud of lamentation be
Where, on a warrior's grave, a lyre is hung. We keep the echoes of his golden tongue, We keep the vision of his chivalry. From "In Memory of Rupert Brooke" by Joyce Kilmer
"God rest his dear and gallant soul," ... Father Duffy
Joyce Kilmer was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on December 6, 1886. He was educated at Columbia University, graduating in 1908. From 1909 to 1912 he was associated with Funk and Wagnall's Company, working as an editor on their dictionary. He served as Literary Editor of the "The Churchman", an Anglican newspaper (Joyce Kilmer converted to Catholicism towards the end of 1913) and in 1913 became a member of the staff of "The New York Times." When the U.S. declared war on Germany in 1917, Kilmer was a family man with a wife and children. He would not have been required to serve. Never-the-less he enlisted as a private in the Seventh Regiment, New York National Guard. At his request and with the assistance of Father Duffy, he transferred into the 165th Infantry, the old Fighting 69th. While the Regiment was at Camp Mills he was transferred to Company H, Headquarters Company and assumed the position of Senior Regimental Statistician. Once in France he quickly attained the rank of Sergeant and was attached to the newly organized Regimental Intelligence staff as an observer. He spent many nights on patrol in no-man's land gathering information which would be of tactical importance to the Regiment and the Division.
