Sunday, July 14, 2002 - Avalon, NJ 780 Total Entrants: 606 Finishers 7 Mile Island Race 110 Finishers 2 Mile Run-Walk The event was timed with the WinningTime ankle band chip system. If you did not return your band please see below for how to return your band, and not pay the replacement fee. Thank you. The school provides week-long vacations for visually handicapped children. Many volunteers worked very hard and tirelessly on this event, and that work was evident from start to finish, along with the Charity Festival which immediately follows the race. Early morning rain stopped prior to race start but the air was heavy, and still with high humidity. It was a good thing that the sun did not come out. There was plenty of water for all participants especially at the finish with cold wet towels and an overhead spray of water for all finishers. Plenty of bottled cold water was also readily available. With over $8,000 in premium cash awards on the line, an exciting event went off quickly. Breaking away for a solo win was Gabriel Muchiri, 24 years old, West Chester, PA in an excellent 33:28. He gave it a good go at the $1,000 time bonus if he could break 32:50. But the humidity just was too tough on race morning. Gabriel still walked away with the $1,000 overall first cash prize.

Mitch McConnell was nominated Saturday as the Republican candidate for a special election to fill Gov. Ernie Fletcher's former congressional seat. State Sen. Alice Forgy Kerr of Lexington got the nomination over two other legislators - state Reps. Stan Lee of Lexington and Lonnie Napier of Lancaster - and a Lexington councilman, Chuck Ellinger II. Kerr said she expected her Democratic opponent to be Attorney General Ben Chandler, whom Fletcher defeated in the gubernatorial election Nov. 4. Democrats are to select a nominee Monday. The election, which Fletcher has indicated he will call for Feb. 17, apparently would be the first Republican-against-Democrat contest of 2004, a presidential election year. "President Bush and others in Washington are watching this race very closely," Kerr said in a final pitch to electors, who came from 15 of the 16 counties of the 6th District. "They know the liberals will stop at nothing to take this seat." McConnell's political action committee gave $10,000 to Kerr and two of his staffers joined her campaign. Kerr said she had raised $200,000 in all. In addition, national Republicans have created a campaign fund for use in the race.

And when they do, it's certain that Stan Cornyn will be viewed as the Jim Thompson of liner notes. He's already scored at least one scholarly article ("The Composition of Celebrity: Sinatra as Text in the Liner Notes of Stan Cornyn," Gilbert L. Gigliotti, in , Len Mustazza, Ed., Westport, CT: Praeger Publishers, 1998). While working for Warner Brothers and Reprise in the 1960s, Cornyn penned notes to a number of albums. To call them liner notes is stretching the conceptthese are more like fantastical riffs played out by a cat so far out there he's in a galaxy by himself. Cornyn actually won back-to-back Grammys in 1965 and 1966 for two Sinatra albums, September of My Years and Sinatra at the Sands . Cornyn was director of Creative Services at Warner as the 70s came in, and masterminded a number of ground-breaking marketing and packaging ventures, such as the Schlagers series of low-cost label samplers. He helped launch Randy Newman's career with the equivocal marketing line, "Once You Get Used to It, His Voice Really is Something." Cornyn went on to become a major player in the biz as the president of Warner New Media in the early 1990s, then ran Mediavision Multimedia Publishing, Inc. He now enjoys the good life in retirement in Santa Barbara and recently published a one-of-a-kind memoir of his time with Warner Brothers:

A Value type, recall, maintains its state within each associated object [what in C++ is created when we write T t]. A Reference type is a duple in which the named instance is a handle holding either null or the address of an unnamed object allocated on the managed heap. When we initialize the Object^ second parameter of Console::WriteLine with a Value type, there is a hiccup in the unified type system because there is no way to represent the Value type directly within the handle of a Reference type. Woosley Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics Office: Kerr 105 Phone: 9-2976 Email: woosley@ucolick.org Educational Background: B.A., Rice University Ph.D., Rice University Research Interest: Stanford Woosley's research centers on theoretical high-energy astrophysics, especially violent explosive events such as supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. He and his group, which typically includes two postdoctoral researchers and two graduate students, are especially interested in the nucleosynthesis, hydrodynamics, and radiation transport in these events, and in the evolution of massive stars, which sets the stage for such explosions. Detailed models are evolved on the computer. Woosley is also co-investigator on the High Energy Transient Experiment II a satellite dedicated to the study of gamma-ray bursts, scheduled by NASA for (re)launch in 1999and is involved in planning NASA's other missions for gamma-ray astronomy in the next century. His current research projects include modeling the evolution of massive stars (8 to 50 times the mass of the sun) through all stages of nuclear burning, in an attempt to obtain realistic presupernova stars and a complete depiction of nucleosynthesis for all isotopes lighter than krypton. An example of this sort of work can be found in ApJS, 101, 181, (1995) with application to Galactic chemical evolution discussed in ApJS, 98, 617 (1995). Currently, these calculations are being repeated with improvements in the nuclear physics, a more realistic treatment of convection, new opacities, mass loss, and rotation. Much of the work on the nuclear aspects of nuclear astrophysics is being done in collaboration with Rob Hoffman (LLNL). A major project is also under way with Alex Heger (MPA - coming to UCSC as a postdoc in winter, 1998) - and Norbert Langer (Potsdam) to model the effects of rotation on the evolution of massive stars all the way to the presupernova state.
