Kerr was the one honest starter employed by the White Sox in the scandalous 1919 World Series . He won his two starts against the Reds, one by shutout, while the corrupt star pitchers, Ed Cicotte and Lefty Williams , each dumped their first two assignments. Kerr was 21-9 in 1920 and, after the guilty players were purged, went 19-17 for the demoralized, seventh-place 1921 White Sox . Denied a $500 raise, he decided to pitch for independent teams rather than for tightfisted Charley Comiskey.

Katharine Kerr

Legislator likely to face Chandler in 6th District race By AL CROSS
across@courier-journal.com
The Courier-Journal About Top Jobs Kerr, the favorite of U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell and sister of 1995 Republican gubernatorial nominee Larry Forgy, won the nomination on the second official ballot of party officials in the district. Her major competitor was state Rep. Stan Lee of Lexington. Kerr is expected to face Attorney General Ben Chandler, the Democrat who lost the governor's race to Fletcher, in a special election that Fletcher has said he plans to call for Feb.17. Democrats will nominate their candidate tomorrow night. Two other Democrats, state Auditor Ed Hatchett and Fayette County Attorney Margaret Kannensohn, say they will seek the nomination, but they acknowledge that they are positioning themselves to seek the next full term if Chandler loses on Feb.17. The filing deadline to run in the May primary is Jan.27. On the Republican side, state Sen. Tom Buford of Nicholasville says he plans to file for the full two-year term, which begins in January 2005.

    Illingworth Kerr, RCA
In 1905, Illingworth Holey Kerr was born in Lumsden, Saskatchewan. One of four children born to William Hugh and Florence (nee Nurse) Kerr, he grew up in the small prairie town. Kerr always felt a close association to animals and began drawing them at an early age. His mother painted in watercolour and encouraged him to draw and paint and in 1919, 14 of his works were entered into the Regina Exhibition and all won awards. In 1923, the young Kerr headed east to get an art education and after a brief session at Central Technical School in Toronto, enrolled at the Ontario College of Art. His teachers included Arthur Lismer, Frederick Varley, J.E.H. MacDonald and William Beatty. Kerr knew that C.W. Jeffrey’s had painted in the Lumsden area and he enrolled in his illustration class his final year at OCA. A month after classes with Beatty in landscape painting in his final year, Kerr returned to the prairies which reminded him that despite his many travels, he would always remain a dyed-in-the-wool Westerner. Kerr traveled home via Banff and visited the studio of Carl Rungius. Returning home to Lumsden, he rented a studio above the pool hall and operated a trapline to earn money so he could continue to paint. Working from oil sketches, Kerr created some of his most famous canvases including

He scored 54 or more goals four straight years and possibly could have achieved career totals among the highest in NHL history if weren’t for the injury bug that plagued him throughout his career. Even so, Kerr’s 363 career goals as a Flyer rank third on the team’s all-time list. During his first three years in the NHL, Kerr battled knee injuries and a broken leg more than defenseman and goaltenders. After scoring 54 career goals, Kerr equaled that number in 1983-84, his breakout season. Using his size, he entrenched himself in front of the net where he was as immovable as an incumbent politician. Fighting off the crosschecks, slashes, and claws of defenders, Kerr waited for his chance to pounce on a loose puck or sweep home a centering pass. Playing on a Mike Keenan coached team, however, allowed Kerr to become an all-around player. The hulking right wing was willing to listen, learn, and, most important, play defense.

I've wanted to write this album for a long time. It seems like always. I remember trying several years ago in New York, then abandoning it when something else came up. In 1963 a trunk I had shipped from Naples to the island of Hydra was lost and with it notes I had made on a "Sea" album. And, more recently, a composer arranger and a friend I had interested in "The Sea" waltzed off together to create their own such project. No matter. That lost, abandoned, or stolen Sea means nothing now. The words here are the ones I have lived with for the past several weeks, and they remain for me important. I don't believe a man can write about the sea and not include himself. Much of me is here and I have used the sea as a platform to speak about the times and the seasons and people's relationships to one another. Most of all, I've used the sea to write about loving.
