Its important to note that Dallek has not written a "pro-Kennedy" book at all - he deals with JFKs affairs head on, as well as the incredible amount of medication that the president took not only to keep him alive, but to ameliorate his pain from back injuries, spastic colitis, Addisons Disease and other physical ailments. Particularly interesting in this masterful tome is Dalleks detailed writing on Vietnam, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Bay of Pigs Invasion and JFKs marital infidelities. Where Dallek breaks new ground is his examination of JFKs medical records, and how JFKs extensive use of medication affected his life and also his decision making during his presidency. Dallek concludes, based on his seemingly thorough research, that the presidents medication did not influence any important decision making. But, this is an issue that bears discussion and scholarly debate. Dalleks conclusions carry significant weight because JFKs medical records until recently were not made available to authors and scholars.

John Kennedy On November 22, 1963, when he was hardly past his first thousand days in office, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was killed by an assassin's bullets as his motorcade wound through Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was the youngest man elected President; he was the youngest to die. Of Irish descent, he was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1917. Graduating from Harvard in 1940, he entered the Navy. In 1943, when his PT boat was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer, Kennedy, despite grave injuries, led the survivors through perilous waters to safety. Back from the war, he became a Democratic Congressman from the Boston area, advancing in 1953 to the Senate. He married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953. In 1955, while recuperating from a back operation, he wrote Profiles in Courage , which won the Pulitzer Prize in history.

Biography
Quote John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29th 1917 at Brookline (Massachusetts). His father Joseph Kennedy was an ambitious politician, who became from son of a pubkeeper to a millionaire. He married the daughter of the major of Boston, Rose Fitzgerald. John F. was their second son. During World War II their oldest son lost his life, when his airplane exploded above the Canal. Kennedy studied at Harvard and after he had finished, he also had to serve in the war. As lieutenant of the PT 109 he once was shipwrecked, but he survived and because of his heroism he saved the lives of his crew. In 1952 he became senator of Massachusetts. In 1956 he almost became running mate of Adlai Stevenson, but lost to Estes Kefauver of Tennessee: anyway, they lost the elections. In 1958 he won reelection in Massachusetts by 875,000 votes, the largest majority in the state's history. He was elected for president in November 1960, after a less than easy election contest. He defeated Richard Nixon and became the youngest (43) to be elected to the White House in American history 'till then. In contrast to Al Smith in 1928 (first Catholic presidential candidate) Kennedy was elected despite of being Catholic.

JOHN F. KENNEDY
35th President of the United States
He was sworn in as President on January 20, 1961, and in his inaugural speech, spoke of many of the issues he had campaigned on, mentioning America’s commitment to democracy and liberty; calling for international peace and arms control. Furthermore, he asked that Americans serve their country by stating: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country". He also asked the world community to join together to oppose "the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself".

John F Kennedy (1917 - 1963)
Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, into a wealthy family. Educated at Choate preparatory school and Harvard University, he graduated in 1940. Following naval service in the Pacific in World War Two, he entered politics in 1946 and won election as a Democrat to the US House of Representatives. Spurred on by his father, Joseph Kennedy, in 1952 John Kennedy was elected to the upper house of Congress, the Senate, defeating the incumbent Republican. Unsuccessful in gaining the 1956 Democratic vice-presidential nomination, Kennedy ran and won the party's presidential nomination four years later. His defeat of vice-president Richard Nixon in the subsequent election made him the nation's first Roman Catholic head of state. He was also, at the age of 43, the youngest president ever elected. His presidency got off to an uncertain start, despite the promise in his inaugural address of January 1961 that the US would 'pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend [and] oppose any foe to assure the survival and success of liberty ...'. Subsequently, his years in power were marked by several areas of tension in foreign affairs, together with a rhetorical commitment to introducing domestic reforms, and most of all to expanding the civil rights of black Americans. He inherited the Eisenhower administration's plan to use anti-communist Cubans to invade Cuba in order to overthrow Fidel Castro's government there. In April 1961 the invasion ended in failure, and in Castro's survival. Many historians suggest it was this fiasco that led the Soviet Union to conclude that Kennedy was a weak leader, and that they could get away with installing nuclear weapons on Cuba in 1962. The subsequent Cuban missile crisis did much to restore Kennedy's reputation, as Soviet Communist Party leader Nikita Khruschev withdrew the missiles - after a 13-day stand-off that included the naval quarantine of the island by the US.

Back from the war, he became a Democratic Congressman from the Boston area, advancing in 1953 to the Senate. He married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953. In 1955, while recuperating from a back operation, he wrote "Profiles in Courage," and won the Pulitzer Prize in history. In 1960 Kennedy gained the Democratic Party's nomination for President. Millions watched his television debates with the Republican candidate, Richard M. Nixon. Winning by a narrow margin in the popular vote, Kennedy became the youngest man elected President, and the first Roman Catholic. President Kennedy's economic programs launched the country on its longest sustained expansion since World War II. He also took vigorous action in the cause of equal rights, calling for new civil rights legislation. Shortly after his inauguration, Kennedy permitted a group of Cuban exiles to invade Cuba in an attempt to overthrow the regime of Fidel Castro. The invasion was a failure. In 1962 the Russians began to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. When this was discovered in October of 1962, Kennedy imposed a quarantine on all offensive weapons bound for Cuba. With the world on the brink of nuclear war, the Russians backed down and agreed to remove the missiles. Kennedy asserted that both the Russians and Americans had a vital interest in stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and the arms race. To this end his administration negotiated the test ban treaty of 1963.

ALTERED STATESMAN
In contrast to the grey establishment figures of the Eisenhower years, John F Kennedy represented everything the USA of 1960 aspired to: youth, vigour, dynamism and a sense that the American dream was in reach again. However, the image was a sham: Kennedy was concealing a secret which could prevent him from becoming president. Another serious condition plagued Kennedy. Born with one leg shorter than the other, he suffered from chronic back pain which required rocking chairs and heating devices, but most importantly injections of powerful painkilling drugs. Max Jacobsen a.k.a. Doctor Feelgood began to supply JFK with amphetamines (speed) which he claimed were vitamins, hormones and enzymes.
