An Unfinished Life: John F. Kennedy, 1917-1963

By Robert Dallek
Little, Brown. 838 pp. $30
Monday, June 16, 2003 Chapter One Beginnings George Bernard Shaw, speaking as an Irishman, summed up an approach to life: ... "I dream things that never were-and I say: Why not?" -John F. Kennedy before the Irish Parliament, June 28, 1963 But his son had if not formed a deep emotional attachment, at least taken his cue from his mother's father, John F. Fitzgerald. "There seems to be some disagreement as to whether my grandfather Fitzgerald came from Wexford, Limerick or Tipperary," Kennedy would later recall. "And it is even more confusing as to where my great[-]grandmother came from-because her son-who was the Mayor of Boston-used to claim his mother came from whichever Irish county had the most votes in the audience he was addressing at that particular time." And indeed, when the twenty-nine-year-old had first run for Congress the year before, Irish Americans in his district had been hesitant to support Kennedy because of his lack of ethnic identification, let alone pride. Officially, Kennedy was on a fact-finding mission to study the potential workings of the Marshall Plan in a Europe still reeling from the devastation wrought by the Second World War. Unofficially, it was a chance to relax with Kathleen Kennedy Hartington, Jack's favorite younger sister, who was even more "English American" than he was. Though her husband, William Cavendish Hartington, who was in line to become the next duke of Devonshire, had died in the war, Kathleen had stayed in England, where the Devonshires treated her with fond regard. They gave her free run of their several great estates, including Lismore Castle in southern Ireland's County Waterford, a twelfth-century mansion once owned by Sir Walter Raleigh. Kathleen called it the "most perfect place" in the world.

John F. Kennedy

Kennedy, 1917-1963, portrays the life of the 35th president of the United States in award-winning fashion. Dallek, a professor at Boston University, spent five years of extensive research to produce this tremendous biography. Not only did Dallek unearth Kennedy's own tryst with a White House intern (which recently made national headlines), he also reveals Kennedy's use of numerous prescription drugs during his turbulent life to battle the multitude of inflictions that ravished his body since early childhood.

Customer Reviews I have not read all the bios of John Kennedy but I have read many. I find this one very comprehensive and objective. It treats JFK honestly and it does not limit itself to those things that make him look good but it offers his shortcomings and his missteps as well.Having said that, one senses that the author has a slight bias toward his subject. Not a worshipful feeling but a sense that Kennedy was right on more things than perhaps he was.For example, JFK pulled a bit of a bluff in the Cuban Missile Crisis that fortunately worked. However, had it gone the other way, history (if there was anyone to write it) would have been quite different. So his finest hour was, I think, somewhat of a bit of luck more than a really smart move based on the military thesis that Sun Tzu stresses, i.e. do not fight a war unless you know you can win. That aside, this is an excellent, well-written book and I highly recommend it.Susanna K. An Unfinished Life: John F. Kennedy, 1917-1963 > Customer Review #1: A true masterpiece

Dallek has written a little over 700 pages of fascinating insight into the Kennedy presidency. Its important to note that Dallek has not written a "pro-Kennedy" book at all - he deals with JFKs affairs head on, as well as the incredible amount of medication that the president took not only to keep him alive, but to ameliorate his pain from back injuries, spastic colitis, Addisons Disease and other physical ailments. Particularly interesting in this masterful tome is Dalleks detailed writing on Vietnam, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Bay of Pigs Invasion and JFKs marital infidelities. Where Dallek breaks new ground is his examination of JFKs medical records, and how JFKs extensive use of medication affected his life and also his decision making during his presidency. Dallek concludes, based on his seemingly thorough research, that the presidents medication did not influence any important decision making. But, this is an issue that bears discussion and scholarly debate. Dalleks conclusions carry significant weight because JFKs medical records until recently were not made available to authors and scholars.

KENNEDY, JOHN F.
, thirty-fifth president of the United States. Kennedy was born into an Irish-American family with aspirations resembling those of the British gentry. Overcoming limitations of health and doubts about his personal ambitions, he achieved the presidency by battling simultaneously on several fronts. Kennedy coasted to the inevitable first-ballot nomination at the Democratic party's Los Angeles convention in July 1960 and then pulled off what proved to be an essential political coup by selecting Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas as his running mate. Kennedy's electoral college margin of 303-219 was won with little more than a 100,000-vote plurality out of nearly 69 million cast. At the age of forty-three, he became the youngest man to reach the White House via the electoral college. Most significant was his ability to demonstrate that a Roman Catholic could win. The second Kennedy legacy, more arguable and tentative, involved the contention that his objectives were myopic to begin with, and that he encouraged inflated expectations, both at home and abroad. His misguided effort to topple Fidel Castro's Cuban regime during the Bay of Pigs fiasco triggered a chain of events that helped lead to the later showdown over Russian missiles in Cuba. His continuation of the American commitment to the South Vietnamese government of President Ngo Dinh Diem intensified the escalation in Southeast Asia. That policy became virtually irreversible when Kennedy became an accomplice in Diem's subsequent overthrow. Those who had expected a more activist presidency found him too timid about pressuring the still-powerful congressional conservatives. Fear of political retribution inhibited requests for additional civil rights legislation until violent resistance to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s, desegregation efforts removed his options.
