I read this book perhaps more frequently than any other book. Quintessential Christian reading. Following Christ isn't just about joy. We are called to deny ourselves daily, and to carry our crosses. More than console, this book calls us to imitate Christ, to do the real tough work of living in humility and obedience. It is beautiful, passionate, powerful, and challenging. Read it.

    Moderne Devotie

Of what use is it to discourse learnedly on the Trinity, if you lack humility and therefore displease the Trinity? Lofty words do not make a man just or holy; but a good life makes him dear to God. I would far rather feel contrition than be able to define it. repentance... It is faith and holy life that are required of you, not a lofty intellect or knowledge of the profound mysteries of God. A humble countryman who serves God is more pleasing to Him than a conceited intellectual who knows the course of the stars, but neglects his own soul. A man who truly knows himself realizes his own worthlessness, and takes no pleasure in the praises of men. A man is unwise if he occupies himself with any things save those that further his salvation. A spate of words does nothing to satisfy the soul, but a good life refreshes the mind, and a clean conscience brings great confidence in God. Should you see another person doing evil, or carrying out a wicked purpose, do not on that account consider yourself better than him, for you cannot tell how long you will remain in a state of grace. We are all frail; consider none more frail than yourself. This must be our chief concern - to conquer self, and by daily growing stronger than self, to advance in holiness.

The Imitation of Christ: A Timeless Classic for Contemporary Readers > Customer Review #1: Of great historical import, yet strangely timely

Thomas a Kempis was medival monk and priest (1380-1471) who served as chronicler of the monastery at Mt. St. Agnes. During his long life of scholarship, he wrote several biographies of church fathers and a number of devotional works. The "Imitation of Christ" remains his most famous work and the one that has best stood the test of time. Indeed, one of the wonderful things about this work is that it reminds us that the life of the mind is not a creature of the Enlightenment. Even during the so-called Dark Ages there were brilliant scholars with a wide knowledge of both scripture and philosophy. Reflecting its vibrant insight into the human condition, the "Imitation of Christ" remains influential on both sides of the Reformation divide. It reportedly was, for example, one of John Wesleys favorite devotionals.

Kantze r The case for inerrancy rests precisely where it has always rested, namely, on the lordship of Christ and his commission to the prophets and apostles, who were his representatives. Because it rests on Christ and his authority, the question of inerrancy will therefore remain a key doctrine of the evangelical church so long as Christ is Lord. Evangelicals must remember, however, that this basis must be set forth anew for every generation. What was adequate for Gaussen, Pieper, and Warfield is still valuable, but it is not necessarily adequate to serve as the foundation for the thinking of our generation. The case for inerrancy must be made anew with each presentation of the gospel teaching.... Kenneth S. Imitation: of Christ and of men. Thomas a Kempis' The Imitation of Christ is said to be the most read Christian book apart from the Bible. It is held to be one of the foremost devotional classics of the ages. While it is not difficult to see why this should be the case, I will be so bold as to offer some detraction. But first I must acknowledge what is praiseworthy in the writings of the 15th century Augustinian monk. The admonitions of Thomas generally fall into two categories: 1) to accept Christ's invitation to learn to become humble and gentle, and 2) to make sure that you do all the "religious" stuff (sacraments and so forth). The former consideration is a most important one for all Christians, and in fact for anyone who seeks wisdom and peace, the latter consideration is another matter...
In his admonitions for the Christian to turn from self-focus and to live in humility, these writings are wonderful. Thomas says, "Trust neither in your own knowledge nor in the cleverness of any human being; rather, trust in God's grace, for it is He who supports the humble and humbles the overconfident." Of the importance of humility to one's ability to learn, we find observations such as this:

    Questions for reflection:
    1. How do you imitate Christ?
    2. What devotions keep you connected to the Lord?
    3. What is the essence of imitation?
"Imitate me as I imitate Christ." These are St. Paul's words to the people of Corinth and to us as we struggle to live out our baptismal calling. We do well to ponder what that imitation of Christ is like. A resource in this endeavor is a classic work The Imitation of Christ , written by Thomas Kempis (1380-1471). This Augustinian priest attempted to assist fellow pilgrims in living a dynamic spiritual life. This work has been read by millions of people and has helped many to become better disciples of the Lord. According to Robert Ellsberg: "For Thomas the imitation of Christ does not mean emulating his external deeds but adopting the inner pattern of piety: humility, detachment from the world, prayer and obedience to the will of God.
