Helen was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Her father's name was Arthur H. Keller and her mother's name was Kate Adams. At just nineteen months old, the poor child became ill with an acute illness. This dreadful illness nearly took her life but only left her deaf and blind for the rest of her life. For schooling, her parents called the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston. A tutor was sent out to Helen's home to educate her. On March 3, 1887, Anna Sullivan arrived. Helen quotes,"The most important day I can remember in all my life is the one which my teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan came to me." Anne gave Helen a different perspective on life. She made Helen see things in a different light. When Anne came to the house she taught Helen how to read Braille and to speak. In 1890, she learned how to talk. In October 1894, she went to the Wright-Humason School for the Deaf in New York City. Ms. Sullivan was allowed to go with her to this school. Here she also learned to read people's lips by touching them and figuring out what words and letters they were saying. In the fall of October 1896, she entered the Cambridge School for Young Ladies. This school was to help prepare her for college. Helen took college prep classes and Ms. Sullivan "wrote" on her hand to translate what the professor was saying. Some of the classes she took were English history, English literature, German, Latin, arithmetic, and Latin composition. "Gradually I got used to the silence and darkness that surrounded me and forgot that it had ever been different until she came-my teacher-who was to set my spirit free." That is Helen's opinion of her teacher, Anne.

HELEN ADAMS KELLER "The two most interesting characters of the 19th century are Napoleon and Helen Keller." - Mark Twain Helen Adams Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama on June 27, 1880 in a white cottage called "Ivy Green." When Helen was 18 months old, she was diagnosed with "brain fever," that perhaps now would be called scarlet fever. At the time, it was thought that the fever "left its victim an idiot." What it did, was to leave the victim blind and deaf. Without this knowledge, those around Helen didn't know how to help her. By the time she was 7 years old, having very little understanding of the world around her, Helen's anger manifested itself into antagonistic, obstinate, and just plain wild behavior (seemingly confirming the old belief). In March of 1887, Anne Mansfield Sullivan walked into Helen's life. Sullivan, having regained useful site through operations, was a 20 year old graduate of the Perkins School for the Blind. From that March day forward, Helen Keller and Miss Sullivan were inseparable. Miss Sullivan believed that with Helen holding or touching an object with one hand, and she simultaneously spelling the name of the object into Helen's other hand, that she would eventually be able to connect the objects with the words. Early on, Helen quickly learned to immitate the words being spelled, however, she was not comprehending that the letters were words, or that the words existed in the form of the objects.

July 1st, 1940.
At the age of 19 months, Helen Keller suffered an illness that left her overwhelmingly deaf and blind. She overcame these disabilities with the help of a dedicated teacher, Anne Sullivan, who taught Helen how to read and write in Braille. Helen also learned to speak, excelled in her studies, and graduated from Radcliff College in 1904. After graduation from Radcliffe College in 1904, Keller devoted herself to a range of social causes. 1909 she joined the Socialist Party and the Industrial Workers of the World and devoted herself to a range of social issues. In 1916 she campaigned against U.S. entry into World War I . Helen also campaigned in favor of women's suffrage. In 1924 Helen turned her attention to the American Foundation for the Blind and became their national spokesperson. As a national symbol of personal bravery in the face of adversity, her books, and William Gibson's popular play, The Miracle Worker convinced the American people that physical limitations need not compromise a person's intellectual potential.

HELEN KELLER (1880 - 1968)

Helen Keller
American (1880 - 1968) Helen was born in Tuscumbia in U.S.A in 1880. She is an outstanding example if a person who conquered a physical handicap. A serious illness which destroyed her sight and hearing. when she was 18 months old. Because of this she unable to speak was entirely shut off from the world. But she rose above her disabilities to become internationally famous and help handicapped people to live fuller lives. She was about 18 months old. She had a serious illness which called "acute congestion of stomach and brain" destroyed her sight and hearing. For almost five years, she grew up as wild and unruly, giggling and chuckling to express pleasure. Her Dad took her to Dr Alexander Graham Bell. He advised Keller to write to the Perkins Institution for the Blind. She spent her childhood in blind school in Boston. She learnt how to write and speak. She used a manual alphabet by which she spelled out words on her hand. Within three years she knew the alphabet and could read and write in Braille. By the time she was 16 years old she could communicate well enough to go to preparatory school and to college.

Helen Keller
The Life of Helen Keller
Helen Keller was a child in darkness who discovered a new world through the eyes and ears of others. Quotes are from Helen and Teacher, by Joseph P. Lash, a definitive work on Helen Keller.
  • Birth She was born July 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Her father, Captain Arthur H. Keller, had fought with the Confederate army at Vicksburg. He edited a news weekly and was periodically a US Marshall. Her mother was Captain Keller's second wife and had been raised in the social circles of Memphis. Both were consummate southerners.
  • The dark comes Helen was a bright and lively infant, but at the age of 19 months she had a fever which left her blind and deaf. There has never been a precise diagnosis for the type and cause of the fever. Helen had a distant memory of what light was like from her time before the fever came. Also, she had begun to make sounds before the fever and had remembered the word "wah-wah" for water. This was a foreshadowing, for water was to be the key to her world of language. I cannot remember how I felt when the light went out of my eyes. I suppose I felt it was always night and perhaps I wondered why the day did not come. Helen Keller
