Customer reviews:
Average customer rating for Dorothy Herrmann - Helen Keller: A Life is: does helen keller justice more than keller's own writings I found this an excellent biography...and it surprised me how much more disturbed I was by the life of Helen Keller and by her relationships with others, particularly Annie Sullivan, than I was before reading this book. I think anyone who previously thought Helen Keller was a happy and joyous woman would realize how mistaken that idea is. although the reality of her triumph over hardship can never be diminished, and for that she will always be a model of inspiration, she strikes me as having been an often extremely sad, emotionally shut down and isolated woman...but mostly someone who lived behind a major false front and "put on a happy face" to survive. strong points: very well researched, clearly and carefully written, often insightful, not shying away from taboo topics (sexuality, alcoholism, child abuse), all in all quite readable

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Helen Keller (1880-1968) American writer, who proved how language could liberate the blind and the deaf. In An Intimate History of Humanity (1994) Theodore Zeldin wrote that "no history of the world can be complete which does not mention Mary Helen Keller... whose overcoming of her blindness and deafness were arguably victories more important than those of Alexander the Great, because they have implications still for every living person." "Children who hear acquire language without any particular effort; the words that fall from others' lips they catch on the wing, as it were, delightedly, while the little deaf child must trap them by a slow and often painful process. But whatever the process, the result is wonderful. Gradually from naming an object we advance step by step until we have traversed the vast distance between our first stammered syllable and the sweep of thought in a line of Shakespeare." (from The Story of My Life In 1887 Anne Sullivan (1866-1936), originally Joanna Mansfield Sullivan, became Helen's tutor

Helen Keller (1880 – 1968)
"I fall, I stand still...I trudge on, I gain a little...I get more eager and climb higher and begin to see the widening horizon. Every struggle is a victory." Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Alabama to a newspaper editor. In 1882, at the age of 19 months, Helen caught a fever that almost killed her. She survived, but the fever cut her off from the outside world, robbing her of her sight and hearing. Helen was an intelligent child and explored the world through her other senses. She smelled and touched everything, and felt people’s hands to learn what they were doing. Before long she learned to do certain jobs, like milking the cows or kneading dough, by feeling other people’s hands and copying their actions. She also learned to recognize people by feeling their faces or their clothes. By the age of five Helen realized that she was different. Other people could talk to communicate and she found it very frustrating that she could not. This frustration caused her go into fits of anger, hurling herself around the room, kicking and screaming.

is BellaOnline's Deafness Host Helen Keller (1880 - 1968) Helen Adams Keller was born in 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. When only 19 months old she was hit with a disease which left her blind and deaf. It is not known what the disease was - perhaps scarlet fever. She was in essence shut off from the world she had known, and her reaction was frustration and rage. An extremely intelligent child, her parents did not know how to deal with this and she ran wild until they brought on Anne Sullivan
Anne had been blind herself, but medical procedures had allowed her her vision back. Anne worked patiently and painstakingly with Anne, teaching her sign language by forming the letters in Helen´s hand. Helen learned to parrot the symbols back, but had no idea what they stood for.
Then, on 5 April 1887, Helen was standing with her hand in flowing water, and Anne repeatedly signed "water water water" in her hand, as she had done many other days. Suddenly the light clicked in Helen´s mind - these symbols MEANT the wet substance touching her hand! She was joyful and amazed - she had a way to communicate about things around her, and to interact with people. She ran around, signing words and asking what other items were. It was the opening of an entirely new life for her.

Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it.

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure.

Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.
