Helen Adams Keller (1880-1968)
Though blind and deaf from the age of nineteen months, with the help of her extraordinary teacher Anne Sullivan Macy, Helen Keller overcame every obstacle to become a renowned author and lecturer and a mighty inspiration not only to the afflicted but to all the world. Learning to read, write, and speakin several languagesshe received her A.B. degree cum laude from Radcliff College and other degrees from Temple University; University of Glasgow, Scotland; University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa; University of Delhi; Free University of Berlin; and Harvard University. She lectured on behalf of the blind throughout the United States and the world and served on the Council on National and International Relations of the American Foundation for the Blind, Inc. Miss Keller was the author of many books, but her autobiography, The Story of My Life , is in itself, a miracle. She wanted to share with everyone, especially the afflicted, the wonders that had come her way and to prove to all that there is hope even when life seems impossible. Compassion and understanding were among her gifts. There seemed no littleness in her soulthis woman who lived in darkness but who shone as a brilliant light for all to see. Her book, and books about her, will help future generations to see and understand the courage and genius of the incredible Alabama woman who so deserved to be among the first to be inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame.

A Srta. On March 3, 1887 Anne Sullivan stepped off a train in Tuembia, AL when she was met at the station by Helen's mother, Kate. Early on Annie realized that to work with Helen, she would need to be the main conduct for information and discipline. Within months Helen had learned to feel objects and associate them with words spelled out by fingerspelling on her palm, to read by feeling raised words and to make sentences by arranging words in a frame. Still, Helen considered this a game and did not yet grasp names for objects until one day the communication breakthrough came with a trip to the well when Helen realized that the cool liquid coming from the pump had a name W~A~T~E~R. There were names for everything. Annie Sullivan ~ captivated by the child's spirit, was determined to give Helen a most extraordinary childhood by teaching by instinct. The most natural mode of communication for Helen was the manual alphabet, ie. fingerspelling.
Writing was her MAIN vehicle of communication to the world.

Helen Keller
Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. When she was 19 months old, she contracted an illness that left her deaf and blind. Despite her handicap, and despite the fact that it was nearly impossible to educate such a child, her mother found Helen to be an intelligent youngster. Her mother's determination to do the best for her child would be mirrored in Helen's determination to overcome her obstacles. At age seven, Helen began her specialized education in reading and writing with Anne Sullivan of the Perkins Institute for the Blind. She was taught to read by the Braille system and to write using a special typewriter. She even learned to speak, with only one month's instruction. She enrolled in Radcliffe College, and graduated with honors in 1904. As an adult, Keller raised money for the American Foundation for the Blind, and traveled and lectured throughout the world. Mrs. Bobb's Language Arts class shared the story of Hellen Keller at assembly for the whole school to enjoy. Bravo! Imagine that you couldn't see these words or hear them spoken. But you could still talk, write, read, and make friends. In fact, you went to college, wrote nearly a dozen books, traveled all over the world, met 12 U.S. presidents, and lived to be 87. Well, there was such a person, and she was born over a hundred years ago! Meet Helen Keller, a woman from the small farm town of Tuscumbia, Alabama who taught the world to respect people who are blind and deaf. Her mission came from her own life; when she was 1 1/2, she was extremely ill, and she lost both her vision and hearing. It was like entering a different world, with completely new rules, and she got very frustrated. By the time she was 7, her parents knew they needed help, so they hired a tutor named Anne Sullivan. Anne was strict, but she had a lot of energy.

Nothing c a n be done without hope and confidence Helen Keller An inspiration to generations, Helen Adams Keller (1880-1968) was blind, deaf, and mute after an illness at age nineteen months. She did not utter her first word until she was seven. "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much," she believed. Her extraordinary teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan (1866-1936) was nearly blind herself and used her gift of tenacity and spirit to force Helen's mind from the dark. Hour upon hour, Sullivan signed words into Helen's hand until the word W A T E R burst through. "That living word awakened my soul , gave it light, hope joy , set it free!" Keller understood and learned quickly. Touching a person's face, feeling the vibrations in the throat, and "reading" what they said as they spoke. With optimism and inspiration , Helen Keller became a living miracle , graduating cum laude from Radcliffe College in 1904, inspiring the world with her writing Keller said, "The best and most

    Social Activist and Visionary
"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched.
They must be felt with the heart."
At the tender age of 19 months, Helen Keller suffered an illness that left her profoundly deaf and blind. She overcame these disabilities with the assistance of a devoted teacher, Anne Sullivan, who taught Helen how to read and write in Braille. She would later learn to speak in a primitive fashion. After graduation from Radcliffe College in 1904, Keller devoted herself to a range of social causes. Between 1909 and 1924, she was active in the radical politics of the Socialist Party and the Industrial Workers of the World. She also campaigned against U.S. entry into World War I and in favor of women's suffrage. Beginning in 1924, however, Keller was an articulate spokesman for the American Foundation for the Blind and a national symbol of personal courage in the face of adversity. Her many books and William Gibson's popular play, The Miracle Worker helped to convince the American people that physical limitations need not compromise a person's intellectual potential.
