, author, lecturer, and crusader for the handicapped. Born physically normal in Tuscumbia, Alabama, Helen Keller lost her sight and hearing at the age of nineteen months to an illness now believed to have been scarlet fever. Five years later, on the advice of Alexander Graham Bell, her parents applied to the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston for a teacher, and from that school hired Anne Mansfield Sullivan. Through Sullivan's extraordinary instruction, the little girl learned to understand and communicate with the world around her. She went on to acquire an excellent education and to become an important influence on the treatment of the blind and deaf. Keller learned from Sullivan to read and write in Braille and to use the hand signals of the deaf-mute, which she could understand only by touch. Her later efforts to learn to speak were less successful, and in her public appearances she required the assistance of an interpreter to make herself understood. Nevertheless, her impact as educator, organizer, and fund-raiser was enormous, and she was responsible for many advances in public services to the handicapped. With Sullivan repeating the lectures into her hand, Keller studied at schools for the deaf in Boston and New York City and graduated cum laude from Radcliffe College in 1904. Her unprecedented accomplishments in overcoming her disabilities made her a celebrity at an early age; at twelve she published an autobiographical sketch in the

Helen Keller (June 27, 1880 - June 1, 1968) was born in Alabama. When she was 19 months old, Helen was struck with a fever and became both deaf and blind. The lively child changed into a little wild 'animal' who terrorised the people around her. In 1887, her parents, Arthur H. Keller and Kate Adams Keller, finally contacted Alexander Graham Bell, who worked with deaf children. He advised them to contact the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts. They delegated the teacher Anne Sullivan, who was then only 20 years old, to try to open up Helen's mind. It was the beginning of a 49-year period of working together.
Sullivan demanded and got permission from Helen's father to isolate the girl from the rest of the family, in a cabin. Her first task was to instill discipline in the spoiled girl. Helen's big breakthrough in communication came one day when she realized that the motions her teacher was making on her palm symbolized the idea of "water" and nearly exhausted Sullivan demanding the names of all the other familiar objects in her world (including her prized doll).
Anne was able to teach Helen to think intelligibly and to speak, using the Tadoma method: touching the lips of others as they spoke, feeling the vibrations, and spelling of alphabetical characters in the palm of Helen's hand. When Helen was 24 she graduated

Author, Advocate for Visually and Hearing Impaired Helen Keller lost her sight and hearing as a young child from illness but overcame these challenges and went on to become the twentieth century's best known advocate for people with disabilities. Through her writing, lectures, and work with various organizations, Keller focused public attention on issues affecting the handicapped. She was also successful in making Braille the standard for printed communication with the blind. She had a lifelong relationship with the American Foundation for the Blind, and was instrumental in the Lions Club International's devotion to the blind and blindness prevention. Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She was less than two years old when she lost her sight and hearing due to a childhood illness. In March 1887 her parents arranged for Helen to be tutored by an extraordinary young teacher, Anne Sullivan. The results over the next several years were nothing short of miraculous. Using only the sense of touch, Sullivan was able to teach Keller to communicate by the manual alphabet, to read Braille, to use a special typewriter, and eventually to speak and read lips. An award winning play and movie, "The Miracle Worker," chronicled the success Sullivan had in getting Keller to make the connection between a word and the object it represented. Keller went on to enroll at Radcliffe and graduated with honors in 1904. Keller had a great facility with language and went on to learn Latin, Greek, French, Spanish, and Italian, in addition to English.

Helen Keller Quotes
Keep your face to the sunshine and you can never see the shadow. I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble. I believe in immortality of the soul because I have within me immortal longings. When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us. College isn't the place to go for ideas. I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do the something I can do. The world is full of suffering, but it is also full of the overcoming of it. One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar. Sure, the world is full of trouble. But, as long as we have people undoing trouble, we have a pretty good world. Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.

Helen Keller
American author and educator who was blind and deaf, 1880-1968
When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us. What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us. It is for us to pray not for tasks equal to our powers, but for powers equal to our tasks, to go forward with a great desire forever beating at the door of our hearts as we travel toward our distant goal. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold. Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it. Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. A man can't make a place for himself in the sun if he keeps taking refuge under the family tree. Keep your face to the sunshine and you will never see the shadow.
