Kant, Immanuel (Koningsbergen [thans Kaliningrad], 22 april 1724 – aldaar 12 febr.

Kant's Philosophical Development
1. Introduction
Modern thought begins with Kant. The appearance of the Critique of Pure Reason in 1781 marks the start of modern philosophy, and Kant's ideas have helped to shape global civilization. Today his texts are read on all continents. Although Kant is in the same league as Confucius or Aristotle, it is possible to determine how his ideas evolved. Scholarship has identified a wealth of facts and details that make tracing the steps of his development easier now than it would have been in the past. His thought reveals a life-long pursuit of certain themes. In this pursuit, some issues and approaches temporarily receded, but only to reemerge later on. In short, his development is not as fractured and erratic as the old scholarly picture suggested. The following account covers Kant's development from his early upbringing to the critical period. Its theme is Kant's intellectual formation: the influences in childhood and youth; the views shaped early on; the questions subsequently pursued; and the historical fate of his answers. The account does not cover the critical and late works but concerns instead their background.

Immanuel Kant. Kant is of course one of the greatest philosophers in the wholehistory; but he can also be regarded as a great philosopher of science.
http://www.bun.kyoto-u.ac.jp/phisci/Gallery/kant_note.html
Immanuel Kant Kant is of course one of the greatest philosophers in the whole history; but he can also be regarded as a great philosopher of science. In his Critique of Pure Reason , he treated several major problems of philosophy of science, such as the nature of space and time, causality, or the nature of logical and mathematical knowledge. His philosophizing had a close relationship with Newtonian mechanics, which was the up-to-date science of his day. Analytic vs. synthetic, a priori vs. a posteriori are typical examples of Kantian dichotomy. Kantianism has another close relationship with philosophy of science. It is well known that some of the logical positivists in the 20th century were strongly influenced by Kantianism or neo-Kantianism in that they tried to distinguish the realm of reason and of experience in our knowledge. Thus, Schlick and Reichenbach, for instance, tried to maintain this Kantian dichotomy in their philosophy of space and time. However, they substituted conventional elements for a priori or rational elements; it seems in this way they tried to reconcile their Kantian legacy with Einstein's new physics, the relativity theory.

Ian C. Johnston Ian C.
