It is a completely non-melodramatic look at how easily the so-called American Dream can slip a few gears into the American Nightmare. Utilizing a vastly different style and approach, it illustrates the same point brilliantly presented in one of 1999's best films, American Beauty . However, whereas Sam Mendes' debut was rife with satire, Eric Mendelson's picture uses a surreal setting to emphasize the true-to-life qualities of his characters. Judy Berlin is filmed in glorious black-and-white, which is the perfect choice for the subject matter. The film opens with scenes of late-'90s suburbia - a local elementary school, houses lined up neatly in rows with cars in driveways, electric meters, and street lights winking out as the day begins. If not for the black-and-white look, all of this would be familiar (bordering on banal), but the monochromatic approach lends a quality of timelessness and unreality to the setting. Events, to the extent that things happen, take place during a September day in the community of Babylon, Long Island. It's the second day of the new school year, but, more importantly, it's the day of a total solar eclipse. However, once the sun disappears behind the moon, it never re-emerges, so more than half of

Judy Dater

Judy Dater grew up in Los Angeles and studied art there, moving to San Francisco where she took a photography course with Jack Welpott (1923-). In 1964 she met Imogen Cunningham whose life and work greatly inspired her. For some years Judy Dater worked with Jack Welpott (who became her second husband) on photographs of women, resulting in 1975 in the publication of their joint book, women and other visions , one of my favourite books from the 70s. Subtitled Traumas of fair women and other visions, the dater/welpott portratis of urban women is a finely presented volume, with an introduction by one of the great photography teachers, Henry Holmes Smith and a number of classic portraits. The best known of these (although certainly not the best picture) is Dater's picture showing Imogen Cunningham, dressed in a dark habit, at left of a Yosemite tree trunk peering towards the nude Twinka in the right foreground, her head turned towards Imogen. Dater went on to write a study of Cunningham. In the period around her divorce from Jack Welpott she created a series of self-protraits exmamining her angst. She has continued her work on women and the nude

Interview With The Pardons (P) Patrick Roberge (JM) Jim Martin (J) Judy Pardon (B) Bob Pardon (P) So Jim you’ve got questions you want to ask. You go ahead and I’ll get the caffeine in my brain first. (JM) Paul Martin was telling me that you guys are opening up a new center there and I’d like to hear about it cause he’s like, “here these are people you need to talk to, do it.” (P) Now do they have a Website first off? (B) Yes we do. (P) Okay. Which is? (B) www.meadowhaven.org (P) Okay. (B) And essentially it is going to be analogous to a kind of step-down facility from WellSpring. WellSpring is like the emergency room that people go to after they’ve initially exited some really abusive group where they can get some immediate help. Then our facility is going to be after they’ve had immediate help, or kind of extended care. So people can come from 3-6 months. It is residential as well. They will be assessed in the beginning and then we’ll develop what we call “An Individual Program” that is designed to meet their particular needs and then during the course of the next three to six months, that program will be implemented and we will, hopefully, at that time we will equip them with the tools that they need to really begin or to continue the process of healing. (P) Where are you located geographically?
