"Greater love than this, he said, no man hath that a man lay down his wife for his friend. Go thou and do likewise. Thus, or words to that effect, saith Zarathustra, sometime regius professor of French letters to the university of Oxtail" (Ulysses) Joyce, or James Augustine Aloysius Joyce to give him his full and somewhat preposterous moniker, was one of the pioneering figures of modernism. He was born at Rathgar in Dublin to a Catholic family and received a Jesuit education at Clongowes Wood and Belvedere Colleges. Subsequently he studied philosophy and languages at University College, Dublin. The linguistic experimentation hinted at in Ulysses (1922) and fully explored in Finnegans Wake (1939) seems to have derived from this early interest in and talent for language study. His childhood is documented excitingly and with an often-jaded view of Irish upbringing in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1914-5) and its draft version Stephen Hero (1944). At this time is seemed likely that he would become a priest (something of the fear and intrigue he felt towards this is clear in the first story of

James Joyce
[¤U¤@¶] During the nineteenth century England gave a somewhat grudging and uncertain approval to the abilities of contemporary foreign writers. But today when modern literature is spoken of. the term is naturally understood to refer to literary works in several languages and implies that great works in any one of these' languages have been built, in part, upon an awareness and appreciation of literature in other tongues. James Joyce, whose work is at once intensely local and universal, is a striking instance of this interdependence. He attributed his most famous innovation in a fictional method to a Frenchman, Edouard Dujardin, and he ransacked the world's languages and literatures for his own purposes, yet he never wrote anything of consequence that did not deal with his native Dublin and his life there. He is known for six works: a book of poems, a play, and four works of fictionDubliners (1914), A Portrail of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), Ulysses(1922), and Finnegans Wake (1939). A Portrait of the Artist is much more directly autobiographical, although its hero, Stephen Dedalus, is a "young man" on whom the writer looks back with sometimes ironical detachment. This young man renounces his family and country and sets out to "encounter the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race." In French, conscience means "consciousness," and, if we combine this with the English meaning, we arrive at a notion of Joyce's ambition. He named his hero after Daedalus, the legendary Greek inventor who designed the labyrinth of Crete, was imprisoned to protect its secret, and then made wings to escape.

James Joyce
[¤W¤@¶] Stephen similarly escapes from Ireland and takes flight, only to penetrate the labyrinth of Irish consciousness from afar and to judge all he has known. Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist do not present the difficulties of Ulysses, a work that reflects the consciousness of its characters in a literal sense: that is, the book is composed of the characters' internal monologues. This device, often referred to as The content of Dubliners. A Portrait of the Artist. and Ulysses is in a sense all the same: Joyce's childhood and youth in Dublin. It is no surprise, therefore, to learn that his final achievement, Finnegans Wake, is also based on Dublin. In this book, however, the artificer is no longer content with existing words; he takes apart, combines, and rebuilds words into a pattern of meanings that no single language (alone (but all languages taken together) affords. Joyce was a linguist who for many years earned his living by teaching English to foreigners. He knew Latin, Italian, French, German, and numerous other tongues, and in this final work drew upon all his knowledge. As Ulysses is an account of a day, Finnegans Wake is the account of a night, or rather a night dreamed by a man in whose consciousness all recorded history finds a meaning and a home. It is interesting that wake is not only the Irish term for funeral, but a part of the verb lo awaken. Thus the novel is concerned with the death and rebirth of Finnegan, builder of cities and a Dublin bricklayer, a compound of all the heroes of myth. Full of riddles, allusions, and ambiguities, it is a tremendous performance, a book about everything.

JAMES JOYCE
AUTHOR Joyce was born at 41 Brighton Square, Rathgar, Dublin,on 2 February 1882. His father invested unwisely, and the family's fortunes declined steadily. Joyce graduated from University College, Dublin, in 1902; he briefly studied medicine in Paris, but his mother's impending death brought him back to Dublin. In 1904, Joyce began Stephen Hero, which he later re-worked as A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. He also met Nora Barnacle, a chambermaid, and on 16 June 1904 they went walking at Ringsend, at the Liffey's mouth; Joyce later chose that date for the events recorded in Ulysses. Having briefly shared a Martello tower at Sandycove, Co Dublin, with Oliver StJohn Gogarty, he sailed from Dublin with Nora in October 1904. Joyce found work in a language school in Trieste. In 1909, he made two trips to Dublin, to arrange publication of Dubliners

JAMES JOYCE (1882-1941)
Ulysses . Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1922. Like several other books in this exhibition, James Joyce's Ulysses was embroiled in a famous and lengthy censorship battle. Ulysses , Joyce's eighth published book, was first published serially in the American literary magazine, The Little Review , from March 1918 to December 1920. The magazine's editors, Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap, fought to prevent suppression of Joyce's work on grounds of obscenity and immorality. In the end, however, the censors won a court order against Anderson and Heap, restraining them from any further printing of Ulysses Two years later, with the aid of his friend Ezra Pound, Joyce was able to interest Sylvia Beach and her publishing firm, Shakespeare and Company, in his controversial, modernist novel. On February 2, 1922, Ulysses was published by Shakespeare and Company in Paris through the printing services of Maurice Darantiere at Dijon. It was not until December 6,1933, that the ban on Ulysses was lifted in the United States.

Ulysses ; with an introduction by Stuart Gilbert and illustrations by Henri Matisse. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935. The French painter Henri Matisse (1869-1954) revolutionized art in the early twentieth century. His work for Ulysses includes six original copperplate etchings and twenty photogravure reproductions of studies for the etchings on colored paper. The images depict subjects found in Homer's Odyssey rather than Joyce's recasting of the epic.
