Pirate Treasure for Palm Reader
by HOST Comp Bob
Books in Palm Reader format can also be read on Pocket PCs with the free program at www.peanutpress.com.
PR Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates
Step lively mateys, there be pirates afoot! If you ever wondered where most of our ideas about pirates originated, now you know... or you will after you've read this marvelous collection of stories. It includes historical information that probably inspired every pirate tale that would come after it from parrots and marooning to treasure, swords and keelhauling. Included are accounts of Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Captain Morgan, and many, many more. Rarely have the exploits of the marauding buccaneers and privateers of the Spanish Main been put so well to quill and parchment.
PR Treasure Island
Jim Hawkins, narrator of Stevenson's classic tale, is rewarded for giving aid to an old pirate, Billy Bones, with a map showing the way to a buried treasure. He and his comrades set sail for the island on a ship manned by a band of pirates a fact they discover during the voyage. The pirate king is the notorious peg-legged cook Long John Silver, one of Stevenson's most favorably received villains. The pirates are vanquished, the treasure is retrieved, and Stevenson's novel is widely admired as one of the greatest adventure novels of all time.
PR Captain Blood
The young physician Peter Blood, unjustly convicted of treason during the reign of King James II, is exiled from England and sold into slavery in Jamaica. He escapes and becomes a pirate. Later he returns to England, and joins the Royal Navy in its efforts against France. Does this title sound familiar? Captain Blood, filmed in 1935, was Errol Flynn's first swashbuckler and catapulted him to worldwide stardom.

    Editor of the Badger:
In reply to your request for some sketches of my life (especially the pioneer part of it) I would say the first recollection I have of life was a home in a log cabin in Green county, Ohio. The cabin as I have been informed, and as I now recollect, was sixteen feet square. Mother had one of the old fashioned looms standing in one corner and a bed in the opposite corner. The bedstead was high enough to admit of a trundle bed under it. This trundle bed contained all of the children. Father at my first recollection had very poor health and had no means of support except as a day laborer and what mother could assist him with her loom. My first recollection of school was in our log cabin where mother had consented to teach a few of the neighbor's children. I remember she had some kind of contrivance fixed up over the lathe of her loom to hold the book so she could pronounce the words to the spelling class without stopping her weaving.
The sequel to the whole matter was that father was ruined financially. After selling his wild land and selling the mill for all he could get for it, he was enabled to pay all his debts, and had a span of old horses and a wagon left. In about eighteen months we had spent the hard earnings of fifteen years. In October 1838, father left the mill. Before leaving he told me the prospects that seemed so bright two years before for settling his children around him, had vanished and if I wished it he would give me my time.

    PROGRESS MADE VISIBLE
    INSPIRED BY THE WORLD'S FAIRS
World's Fairs have been used as settings or themes for numerous works of fiction, film, and music. The Fair may be merely a colorful background for a romance or adventure or it may be a key element in the plot. Visiting a World's Fair may motivate a writer to develop his or her own utopian city. For example, the Emerald City of Oz was inspired by Baum's visit to the "White City" at the Columbian Exposition. The books shown here are merely a selection; others range from The Education of Henry Adams to the Elvis Presley film It Happened at the World's Fair. Frances Hodgson Burnett, 1849-1924.
Two Little Pilgrims' Progress: A Story of the City Beautiful. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1895. L. Frank (Lyman Frank) Baum, 1856-1919.
