Sex Radicals Discussion January 1996
Query: ebhovey@facstaff.wisc.edu 26 January 1996 Dear Historians: I am struggling with a problem. I am sure that the ideas of the sex radicalsEzra Heywood, Angela Tilton Heywood, Victoria Woodhull, Moses Harman, etcwere held by a very small portion of the population in the late nineteenth century U.S. But I don't feel I have enough evidence that most people believed sexuality was too dangerous to be publicly discussed. Besides the histories of the radicals-Sears, Stoehr and Spurlock most prominently-and histories/records of Anthony Comstock's group, I am using state and federal legislation, Alison Parker's diss. on the WCTU, Richelle Gurstein's diss. on reticence, Lewis Erengerg's "Steppin' Out", and the fairly polemic "Mrs. Grundy"(a930). If you have any citations that would be useful for this problem, I would be most grateful. 48. Who Is Samantha Smith Allen?
the Woman Question, edited with an introduction by Jane Curry, (University of IllinoisPress, 1983); Marietta Holley Life with Josiah Allen s wife, by Kate
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/janecurry/sam3.htm
    Who was Samantha Smith Allen?
  • Marietta Holley's literary creation, Samantha Smith Allen, was a philosopher of sound country stock whose ideas on various issues are grounded in an affection for common sense and faith in its applicability to problems. Through her 19th century brand of horse sense American humor, she challenges the status quo of social norms regarding women's issues and plants herself squarely on the side of sensible women's rights. She "rastles" with questions concerning history's treatment of women, rights denied by the church, women's powerlessness before the law, social status, role assumptions, and more. Samantha appeared in more than twenty books written by Holley between 1873 and 1914, among them My Opinions and Betsey Bobbet's Samantha at the World's Fair Samantha Among the Brethren Samantha at Saratoga , and Samantha on the Woman Question . Holley's books were enormously popular when they were published; Samantha Allen was said by one critic to have entertained as many people as had Mark Twain. She received large advances from her publishers, her works were dramatized by popular comedian Neil Burgess, and sales of at least one of her books Samantha at Saratoga put her on the better-seller list for the decade of 1880-1889.

Drury Allen
Son of Robert Allen Jr
Drury Allen, son of Robert Allen Jr. was born 1 December, 1749 in Lunenburg Co. VA. He died 20 January, 1826 in Pike Co. GA. Drury enlisted in the Continental Army 1776 and served until its close.
Drury married in North Carolina to Elizabeth Yarbrough who was born 2 May, 1752 in Amelia Co. VA. and the daughter of Henry Yarbrough. She is the proven daughter from a deed when son, Stokes Allen had power of Attorney for his parents to sell land in Franklin co. that she and her husband Drury Allen had inherited from her father, Henry Yarbrough.
Both Drury and Elizabeth are buried in Georgia on their farm where they lived after the move from North Carolina. Both have tombstones and their dates are taken from their markers. Drury died 1826 and Elizabeth died two years later. From the marker of Drury which states death date 1826 is used to seperate Drury from his nephew Drury Allen, youngest son of Robert Allen Jr. The two Drury's both in age have often been confused.
The will of Drury Allen was probated 3 July, 1826 in Greene Co. GA. He left his wife the estate, after her death to be divided. He names the children of Josiah Allen, Nancy Allen, the widow of his son Clement Allen and at her death or marriage to the children of Clements Allen, to the children of Martha Allen Pyron, Nancy Allen received slaves, and son Stokes and Young D. Allen.

Robert Allen Jr.
New Kent Co. Virginia
Robert Allen Jr. the son of Robert Allen Sr. of New Kent Co. Virginia, was born about 1705 in New Kent Co. This Robert Allen was in St. Paul's Vestry book until 1743. Then appears in the newly formed County of Lunenburg Co., formed in 1745. By 1757 he was in Amelia Co. VA., where he was a grantor. By 1761 Robert and his wife Elizabeth were residents of Granville Co. North Carolina.
Robert was married at least twice. The name of Elizabeth shows up on land deeds. No maiden name is proven, speculation has it as WADE, STOKES or even YOUNG. It appears the name is Young, as the first son born was Young Allen, and this name continues down many generations.
John Young and his family lived in St. Peter's Parish in 1704, then Lemuel Young lived near the Allen's in Lundenburg Co. Not only does the name of Young descend down in the Allen family, the great grandson of Robert Allen and grandson of Drury Allen was named Young Lemuel Allen. This gives strong indication Elizabeth was a Young, and Young Lemuel Allen named for Lemuel Young.
Elizabeth relinquished her dower rights in two deeds recorded in Granville Co. February 1762. She died shortly after signing these two deeds. One deed states Robert Allen Sr. and his wife Elizabeth Allen to Robert Allen Jr. for love and affection, 225 acres on the West side of Billy's creek.

Samantha at the World's Fair, by Josiah Allen's Wife. Until the 1830's, publishers issued books unbound or in plain paper wrappers, leaving the job of arranging for binding to the bookseller or book buyer. In the 1830's, the invention of automatic binding machines made it possible to issue bound books inexpensively, and the modern book clad in a decorative binding was born. The decoration of early cloth bindings, such as that for Chanticleer , tends to remain confined to decorative borders, sometimes with an illustrative vignette added in the center. After the middle of the nineteenth century, publishers began to employ artists and craftspeople to design bindings which exploited both the decorative and advertising possibilities offered by the front board of the book. By the 1890's, a small army of designers, many of them women, worked for American publishers to create designs and illustrations to be stamped on cloth. The heyday of the decorated cloth binding lasts shortly until after World War I, when cheaper methods of book decoration, such as the full-color book jacket, supplant them as a primary advertising device for books.

-F- Fleet, Thomas 1924 Fox, Duffield 1903 Frank-Maurice 1925 Franklin Watts 1942 Fredrick Praeger 1950 Fredrick Fell 1943 Funk, Wilfred 1940
Founded by Isaac Kaufmann Funk, a Lutheran minister who in 1876 began editing and publishing tow magazines, the Homiletic Review and the Voice, the latter for the Prohibition Party. Unfortunately, neither magazine paid its way. The following year he teamed with A.W. Wagnalls, a lawyer and accountant, who got Funk on sounder financial footing. They began by publishing pamphlets and booklets for the clergy, mostly commentaries on the Bible. For more general audiences, they issued a reprint of Spurgeon's The Treasury of David, in seven volumes, issued by subscripiton one at a time for $1.00 each. The success of this led to the more ambitious 27 volume set of Dr. Joseph Parker's People's Bible, also sold by subscription one at a time. This in turn led to the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge by Schaff-Herzogg. The big break for the two men came in 1884 when Funk, watching the explosion of the so-called Second Paperback Revolution, thought there might be a market for religious paperbacks. he issued the "Standard Series", quarto-sized soft bound books.

Marilla went to town the next day and returned in the
evening. Anne had gone over to Orchard Slope with Diana
and came back to find Marilla in the kitchen, sitting
by the table with her head leaning on her hand. Something
in her dejected attitude struck a chill to Anne's heart.
She had never seen Marilla sit limply inert like that.
"Are you very tired, Marilla?"
"YesnoI don't know," said Marilla wearily, looking
up. "I suppose I am tired but I haven't thought about it. It's not that." "Did you see the oculist? What did he say?" asked Anne anxiously. "Yes, I saw him. He examined my eyes. He says that if I give up all reading and sewing entirely and any kind of work that strains the eyes, and if I'm careful not to cry, and if I wear the glasses he's given me he thinks my eyes may not get any worse and my headaches will be cured. But if I don't he says I'll certainly be stone-blind in six months. Blind! Anne, just think of it!" For a minute Anne, after her first quick exclamation of
