An important figure in the ancient times that I feel has to be noted is Josephus Flavius.
Imagine, he lived in just a few years after the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In that stormy time when Roman
Empire was trying to enslave Judea, it seemed as if
there was no hope for Jews, and the hope that was alive
in their spirits was from reality too far. Seems like only one man understood that only alliance with the enemy
may help the nation, the Holy Temple, and culture
to survive. This understanding of his got him the title of
a traitor even though before he was a soldier and fought
against Romans. Even more, he served as a commander
in Galilee. But his group of fighters was surrounded
and trapped in a cave. Everybody died except Josephus who was taken into prisoner to Roman general Vespasian. How did he survive? There is a legend about this mystery, you may choose to look at the next page for the detailed deed of trickery and Flavius's will to survive. It is important to know about the rest of the amazing life of this genius "traitor". Next, we see Vespasian as a

This essay was originally written in favor of the authenticity of the Testimonium . Since its writing, the present writer has changed his position (persuaded in part by the rebuttal from Mr. Earl Doherty) and no longer believes that both passages about Jesus in the Antiquities are authentic. The original essay has been superseded by the following essay: Testimonium Flavianum You may also find the links from my page on Josephus to be interesting: Flavius Josephus You may also want to see my numerous pages here: Early Christian Writings Thank you for visiting!

[BACK] Josephus Flavius (or after his Hebrew name, Joseph ben Mattathiahu), surnamed the "Jewish historian of the Second Temple period", was born in 37 CE in Jerusalem. He became the commander of the Jewish Revolt in Galilee in the year 66 CE, but after his troops were besieged at Jotapata, he was taken prisoner by the Roman general Vespasian who became emperor in 69 CE. After the destruction of Jerusalem (70 CE) he moved to Rome. Here he concluded his historical works. The most important ones are the Jewish War and the Jewish Antiquities. In his War he gives an account of Jewish history from the Maccabean revolt to the Destruction of Jerusalem (70 CE) and Masada (73 CE). Antiquities is a detailed history of the Jews from the very beginning to the outbreak of the Great Revolt in 66 CE. Other writings of Josephus Flavius are dedicated to autobiographical reports and polemical works against anti-Semitism. He died in Rome around 100 CE. [BACK]

I am seeking the works of Josephus Flavius on E-Text (it is not yet on
the TLG), particularly his VITA. Does any such animal exist?
I am also trying to find literary parallels from the ancient
Mediterranean corpora of Josephus' actions when faced with a mob trial.
In V 136-140 Jos. tells of how he dressed in black and hung his sword
around his neck before confronting a mob. I am searching for parallels
to the action of hanging a sword around ones neck. Any leads or speculation on the cultural significance of this would be most welcome. Michael Strangelove

Josephus Flavius in the Middle Ages I am studying Roger Bacon's view on theology, and I am trying to figure out if Bacon actually could read the Hebrew and Greek language. In the introduction of the Compendium of the study of theology, and in his Mathematics in divine utilities Bacon mentiones the book "Antiquitatum" of the Jewish historian Josephus Flavius. I like to ask two questions: 1) Can someone tell me in what language Josephus wrote? I thought in Hebrew, but I am not sure of it. 2) Was there a Latin translation of Josephus writings (especially his historical works) in the 13th century, and from which language, Hebrew, Greek or Arabian? Thanks for answering the questions in advance, Paula Franso pfranso@holly.cistron.nl [Submitted by: Paula Franso Tue, 23 Jan 1996 18:15:28 +200] Up
