A l l knowledge is of itself of so m e value . There is nothing so m in u t e or inconsiderable, that I would not rather k n o w it than not." ~ Samuel Johnson Born on this day in Lichfield, England Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was a man of diligence and skill who overcame childhood blindness and adversity. Desperately poor until his fifties, his face was scarred by scrofula. "No people can be great who have ceased to be virtuous," wrote Johnson. Often quoted, highly respected, he was considered an 18th century giant of literature. With superb style, he celebrated morality and mankind. He is best known for the massive Dictionary of the English Language (1755), which took him over seven years to create . Johnson's masterpiece, which included 43,500 words , became one of the most important works ever compiled and standardized the language "The natural flights of the human mind are not from pleasure to pleasure, but from hope to hope," he wrote in The Rambler Johnson's Shakespeare (1765) translated obscure passages and was the model for later interpretations. The best part of every author is in general to be found in his book, I assure you.
Samuel Johnson
Samuel Johnson lived by his pen from the age of 28 until he received a pension at the age of 53. He wrote essays, reviews, sermons, biographies, poetry, an edition of Shakespeare's plays and the Dictionary of the English Language . Even after financial necessity had ceased to drive him, he still produced many works, including A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland and the Lives of the Poets . The Yale collected edition will run to 24 volumes.
Of the making of books and articles about Johnson, there is no end. There are studies of every aspect of his life and work, from his prose style to his politics, from his religion to his health. No attempt has been made to deal with these here. There is a useful bibliography of secondary literature in Clingham's volume, noted below under "Starting points". LONG-EXPECTED one-and-twenty,
Pride and pleasure, pomp and plenty,
Great * * * * * * *, are now your own.
Free to mortgage or to sell,
Wild as wind, and light as feather,
Bid the sons of thrift farewell. Call the Betsies, Kates, and Jennies,
All the names that banish care;
Show the spirit of an heir. All that prey on vice and folly
Joy to see their quarry fly:
There the gamester, light and jolly,
There the lender, grave and sly. Wealth, my lad, was made to wander, Let it wander as it will; Call the jockey, call the pander, Bid them come and take their fill. When the bonny blade carouses, What are acres? What are houses? Only dirt, or wet or dry. Should the guardian friend or mother Tell the woes of wilful waste, You can hang or drown at last!

Adversity has ever been considered the state in which a man most easily becomes acquainted with himself.
Samuel Johnson (1709 -1784):
Always... set a high value on spontaneous kindness. He whose inclintion prompts him to cultivate your friendship of his own accord, will love you more than one whom you have been at pains to attach to you.
Samuel Johnson (1709 -1784):
Among the calamities of war may be numbered the diminution of the love of truth, by the falsehoods which interest dictates, and credulity encourages.
Samuel Johnson (1709 -1784): The chains of habit are too weak to be felt until they are too strong to be broken. Samuel Johnson (1709 -1784): A decent provision for the poor is the true test of civilization.

A Guide to Samuel Johnson
By Jack Lynch
A number of requests for information on Johnson they come my way because of my Johnson page on the Web and my dissertation largely on Johnson have convinced me to put together a few paragraphs to introduce novices to Johnson. This is nothing like a comprehensive guide to the literature, although I do discuss some real bibliographies. I cover a few works of scholarship, and those not necessarily my favorites they're the ones that I think are most important for a beginner to know, the most often quoted, though not always the most thought-provoking. And this guide is unabashedly opinionated, though I hope my preferences aren't often perversely far from the mainstream. Still, it might be useful for people who've received no more formal introduction to Johnson studies. I don't pretend for a minute that this guide is anywhere near complete or comprehensive it was prepared off the top of my head. I don't know whether my omissions of important material are more grievous than the outright errors that are doubtless in here somewhere. But it might be useful to someone just getting started, and, since it's free, it would be a bargain at twice the price. I welcome comments and corrections; my address appears below.

    78. Johnson (Samuel)

    http://www.proverbes-citations.com/johnson.htm
    Johnson, Samuel (1709-1784), poète, critique, essayiste et lexicographe anglais, l'une des figures majeures de la littérature du XVIIIème siècle, célèbre pour son bon goût, la force et l'équilibre de sa prose et ses mots d'esprit. Souvent appelé Dr.Johnson par ses contemporains, Johnson naquit à Lichfield, où il fit ses études et acquit, grâce aux livres de son père, libraire, une grande connaissance des auteurs classiques. En 1731, il créa une école à Lichfield et se lia d'amitié avec l'un de ses élèves, David Garrick, qui devint par la suite un acteur célèbre. Ayant gagné Londres en 1737, il rédigea, de 1741 à 1744, des articles pour le Gentleman's Magazine , publia dans l'anonymat en 1738 son premier grand poème, Londres , qui connut un succès immédiat et lui valut l'admiration de Pope. Dès 1747, Johnson entreprit le Dictionnaire de la langue anglaise , qui parut en 1755 et qui établissait les bases de l'étude historique de la langue anglaise. Dans le même temps, il composa la Vanité des désirs humains (1749), long poème inspiré de la dixième satire de Juvénal, fonda

    Samuel Johnson 1709 - 1784
    Greenwich resident
    "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life;
    for there is in London all that life can afford." Samuel Johnson was born on 18 September 1709 in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England, and died on 13 December 1784 in London. He was the son of Michael Johnson, a bookseller in Lichfield. In 1728 he went to Pembroke College, Oxford, but a lack of money forced him to leave thirteen months later. In 1737 he went to London with his pupil, David Garrick, hoping to complete and sell his tragedy, Irene and make a living as a writer. He had no luck with it; it finally appeared, thanks to Garrick's help, only in 1749 so he took miscellaneous writing jobs. He wrote biographies (including the Life of Savage), political satires (Marmor Norfolciense), and reports on the debates in Parliament. His first hit came in 1738; a poem called London , an imitation of a satire by the Latin poet Juvenal. His other most famous poem is

    80. Guide To Johnson -- Who Is This Johnson Guy?

    Who Is this Johnson Guy?
    A few people have written asking me who Johnson is a tall order, but perhaps a little information will help those who've never encountered Johnson or his works before. Johnson was one of the most important English writers of the eighteenth century. It's long been traditional to refer to the second half of the eighteenth century as "the age of Johnson" (just as the first half is often "the age of Swift and Pope"); and Johnson is the single most quoted prose writer in the English language in most dictionaries of quotations (although Shakespeare and the Bible usually blow him away). But he's usually remembered not as a writer but as a talker, as a personality mostly thanks to James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson ). For a long time, and thanks largely to a review by Macaulay in 1831, Boswell eclipsed Johnson's own writings; in fact, many of the famous lines in the quotation dictionaries come not from his works but from Boswell's recollection of his conversation. Boswell has put Johnson in a very small club authors whose most famous works were written by someone else (the only other members I can think of are Socrates and Alice B. Toklas). In the twentieth century, though, scholars have been paying increasing attention to Johnson himself. I'm a fan of Boswell, but it's not Johnson the talker who captures my interest. So a survey of his works might be helpful. First, the straightforward facts. Johnson was born in September
