    Samuel Johnson Quotes
Almost every man wastes part of his life attempting to display qualities which he does not possess. Let me smile with the wise, and feed with the rich. To do nothing is in everyone's power. He who waits to do a great deal of good at once, will never do anything. Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it. Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. No man ever yet became great by imitation. It is necessary to hope...for hope itself is happiness. Nature has given women so much power that the law has very wisely given them little. He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man. The martial character cannot prevail in a whole people but by the diminution of all other virtues. I would rather be attacked than unnoticed. For the worst thing you can do to an author is to be silent as to his works. Curiosity is one of the most permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect. Leave all the afternoon for exercise and recreation, which are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary because health is worth more than learning.

    Profile
Samuel Johnson was born in Lichfield , Staffordshire, the son of a bookseller whose shop was in the Market Square. When he was five years old he went for English lessons at Dame Oliver's School, Dam Street. After attending the Grammar Schools in Lichfield and Stourbridge he went on to Pembroke College, Oxford. Although a bright student, he suffered from mental stress, not helped by his poverty at this time and his poor eyesight and he left after just over a year. He worked as a teacher in Market Bosworth before moving to Birmingham , where he lived for three years. Here he met Elizabeth Porter, whom he was later to marry. She was twenty years older than Samuel, had already raised a family by a previous marriage and was financially secure. He wrote for the Birmingham Journal and completed his first published book, A voyage to Abyssinia (1735), a translation from a French book of travels. Following their marriage Samuel and Elizabeth set up a school at Edial , near Lichfield but this was not a success. One of Samuel's pupils was David Garrick and together they went to London in 1737, Johnson to write for

    Johnson, Samuel
English writer and lexicographer, a major figure in 18th-century literature as an arbiter of taste, renowned for the force and balance of his prose style.
Early Life Johnson, usually referred to as Dr. Johnson by his contemporaries and later generations, was born in Lichfield on September 18, 1709, the son of a bookseller. He attended the local school, but his real education was informal, conducted primarily among his father's books as he read and studied the classics, which influenced his style greatly.
In 1728 Johnson entered Pembroke College at the University of Oxford. A brilliant but eccentric young man, he was plagued by a variety of ailments from which he suffered the rest of his life. He left in poverty, without taking a degree and having suffered the first of two emotional breakdowns. During this time of despondency his reading of devotional literature led him to a profound religious faith.
After his father died in 1731, Johnson tried teaching and later organized a school in Lichfield. His educational ventures were not successful, however, although one of his students, David Garrick, later famous as an actor, became a lifelong friend. At the age of 26 Johnson married Elizabeth Jarvis Porter, a widow about 20 years his senior, who brought a measure of calm and self-confidence to his life.
