(Tekahionwake)
Since 1889, I have been following her career with a glow of admiration and sympathy. I have been delighted to find that this success of hers had no damaging effect upon the grand simplicity of her nature. Up to the day of her death her passionate sympathy with the aborigines of Canada never flagged. . . . . Her death is not only a great loss to those who knew and loved her: it is a great loss to Canadian literature and to the Canadian nation. I must think that she will hold a memorable place among poets in virtue of her descent and also in virtue of the work she has left behind, small as the quantity of that work is. I believe that Canada will, in future times, cherish her memory more and more, for of all Canadian poets she was the most distinctly a daughter of the soil, inasmuch as she inherited the blood of the great primeval race now so rapidly vanishing, and of the greater race that has supplanted it. HEODORE W ATTS-DUNTON.

Biography
Emily Pauline Johnson was born March 10, 1861 at Six Nations Indian Reserve, Canada. She later adopted the native name Tekahionwake, "double wampum." Johnson was popular in her day as an entertainer, reading poems about her native heritage in tours that crossed Canada, the United States, and England. In Canada Johnson travelled to remote settlements that seldom saw any other entertainment. Johnson's work faded into obscurity following her death. Her first poetry collection, White Wampum , was published in 1895. She later wrote Legends of Vancouver , a collection of tales, and The Shagganappi , a novel. Johnson died in Vancouver March 7, 1913.

Paddling Her Own Canoe:
The Times and Texts of E. Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake)
Carole Gerson and Veronica Strong-Boag
Frequently dismissed as a 'nature poet' and an 'Indian Princess,' E. Pauline Johnson (1861-1913) was not only an accomplished thinker and writer but a contentious and passionate personality who 'talked back' to Euro-Canadian cuture. This volume is the only major scholarly study that examines Johnson's diverse roles as a First Nations champion, New Woman, serious writer and performer, and Canadian nationalist. A Native advocate of part-Mohawk ancestry, Johnson was also an independent, self-supporting, unmarried woman during the period of first-wave feminism. Her versatile writings range from highly erotic poetry to polemical statements about the rights of First Nations. Based on thorough research into archival and published sources, this volume probes the meaning of Johnson's energetic career and addresses the complexities of her social, racial, and cultural position. While situating Johnson in the context of turn-of-the-century Canada, the authors also use current feminist and post-colonial perspectives to reframe her contribution. Included is the first full chronology ever compiled of Johnson's writing. Pauline Johnson was an extraordinary woman who crossed the racial and gendered lines of her time, and thereby confounded Canadian society. This study reclaims both her writings and her larger significance.
