Great Spirit Guide Us
Grandfather, Great Spirit you have been always,
And before you nothing has been.
There is no one to pray to but you.
The star nations all over the heavens are yours,
And yours are the grasses of the earth.
Grandfather, Great Spirit, fill us with the light.
Teach us to walk the soft earth as relatives to all that live.
Help us, for without you we are nothing. - Black Elk Language of Native American Baskets from the Weaver's View (Smithsonian)
http://www.nmai.si.edu/exhibitions/baskets/
"Baskets accompanied Indian people throughout their lives. Babies were carried in baskets, meals were prepared and cooked in them, worldly goods were stored in them, and people were buried in them. Today, baskets serve as markers of cultural pride and inheritance. Basketry is a living art. To help illustrate continuity from past to present, each weaver chose four baskets from the Smithsonian collections and paired them with baskets from their own or other Native basket-makers’ contemporary works. These juxtapositions and the weavers’ thoughts on what they tell us, are presented in “The Weavers’ View.” Links on the top navigation bar and side navigation bars lead to a wealth of information and lots of images of baskets. From the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian."

Daily Nexus Online :: I'll Take a Vowell, Please

Being on the phone with best-selling author and radio goddess Sarah Vowell is an experience akin to talking to that girl who sometimes sits by you in section and always seems to be so particularly fascinating that you just wish you had a good excuse to start talking to her. You know. there's something about the books she's always toting around or the comments she only sometimes makes in class that just seems, well, enthralling. And then, all of a sudden, you are talking to her, and you hear the sound of your own voice banging around inside your head, not sounding nearly as punchy or witty as you planned. But wait!

Life Links (Update 10, Feb 28, 2003) Been Having a Ball of a Week Sometimes writing feels like brainstorming, and what a hurricane this month is I feel rather like Lucille Ball in the chocolates factory poems stuffed in pockets and under my hat, down my shirt and packing my cheeks and still I can't do the packaging job adequately. I can't find the words I want and without the right words, the subject that doesn't come nor go: The same poem like a phoenix keeps /Taking shape from the ashes of burnt Perfumed pages. Time to persist, or be disciplined to stay away until the understanding as a fruit has ripened? Or go buy a prepped canvas and a rent time at the airport with a jet turbine?
