Gray's story of Pauline Johnson best Biography yet
Pauline Johnson (1861-1913), poet, author, and actress, was one of Canada's most independent and popular personalities at the turn of the century. Much has been written about her, and her writing has been re-published regularly. Her best biography yet, the 438-page Flint and Feather: the Life and Times of E. Pauline Johnson Tekahionwake is hot off the press this month. It is written by one of Canada's premier biographers Charlotte Gray and reads easily like a novel. Gray feels that Johnson was "one of those rare, remarkable women who rise above conventions and assumptions of their day, and carve their own paths." Most people my age studied some of her poetry in school, especially "The Song My Paddle Sings," and many remember the title of one of her books, Flint and Feather. I remember that she was called a "Mohawk Princess." A Pauline Johnson Canadian stamp was produced on her 100th birthday in 1961.

"Passing Through ... From Town Hall to Opera House"
by Patricia Belier originally published in
The Officers' Quarterly
v. 11, n. 3, Summer 1995, p. 10-12 The turn-of-the-century in Canada has been called "the golden age of travelling performers and reciters," several of the more famous having appeared in Fredericton, among them Pauline Johnson, one of the most popular and prominent figures in Canadian Literature and the author of six books: The White Wampum Canadian Born Legends of Vancouuer Flint and Feather The Moccasin Maker The Shagganappi Emily Pauline Johnson was born in 1861 on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario. She was the youngest of four children of Mohawk Chief George Henry Martin Johnson (1816-1884) and his English wife, Emily Susanna Howells (1824-1898). George Johnson acted as an interpreter for the local Anglican missionary in the area, Rev. Adam Elliot, and he shared the Elliot family home, as did Miss Howells, who had come to Canada in 1845 to live with her sister Eliza (Mrs. Elliot). Thus, the stage was set for the romantic union of a Mohawk chief, "Onwanonsyshon" (Lord ofthe Big House), and his bride, a woman with Quaker roots from Bristol, England. Each was a descendant of a proud and respected lineage: the Howells were merchants and distinguished political and professional figures; the Johnsons belonged to the noble families of the Iroquois Confederacy, their original name of "Tekahionwake" being dropped years earlier, the name Johnson having been offered by Sir William Johnson, an early Superintendant of Indian Affairs in British North America.

Women's History Month 1999 litt@heritagefdn.on.ca E. Pauline Johnson 1861-1913
In this house "Chiefswood", erected about 1853, was born the Mohawk poetess Emily Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake). Her father, Chief G.H.M. Johnson, a greatly respected leader of the Six Nations, built "Chiefswood" as a wedding gift for her English mother, a cousin of the well-known American novelist William Dean Howells. By her writing and dramatic recitals from her own works in Great Britain and throughout North America, Pauline made herself the voice of the Indian race in the English tongue. No book of poetry by a Canadian has outsold her collected verse, "Flint and Feather".
Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, 1858-1910
Adelaide Hoodless was born and lived here until she married John Hoodless in1881. On February 19th, 1897she organized at Stoney Creek the world's first Women's Institute. It was her belief that in this organization rural women could discuss their problems and work together to improve their standard of homemaking and citizenship. The movement spread rapidly throughout Ontario and later to other provinces. Mrs. Hoodless, a natural leader and forceful speaker, introduced the teaching of domestic science into Ontario schools and obtained funds for the building of Macdonald Institute of Guelph. [west of St.George] First Women's Institute
The world's first Women's Institute was organized at Squire's Hall, Stoney Creek, in 1897. Erland Lee, a founder of the Farmer's Institute, assisted by his wife, arranged the meeting. About 100 women from the Saltfleet Township district attended and were persuaded by Mrs. Adelaide Hoodless to form an organization of their own to improve their skills in the arts of homemaking and child care. Here, in the Lee home, Mr. Lee subsequently helped to draft the constitution of the new society. Mrs. E.D. Smith of Winona became the first president of the "Mother Institute". The Women's Institutes movement has since become a world-wide organization.
