Johnson, Pauline (Tekahionwake)
Mohawk writer and performed Born at Chiefswood on the Grand River Reserve of the Six Nations, near Brantford, Ontario, Emily Pauline Johnson was the daughter of George Henry Martin Johnson, Mohawk (Chief Teyonnhehkewea), and Emily Susanna Howells, English-born cousin of William Dean Howells. Johnson's father and paternal grandfather were strong influences on her life. The latter, John "Smoke" Johnson (Sakayengwaraton), was a hero of the War of 1812 and a renowned orator in the Iroquois councils. A gifted speaker in his own right, her father frequently made speeches on behalf of his people and served as a liaison between the Six Nations community and the outside world. Johnson was reared at Chiefswood, the impressive house built by her father that became a gathering place for Indian and white visitors. She was primarily educated at home by her mother, who stimulated her children's love of literature by reading them works by the English romanticists. At age fourteen, Emily entered Brantford Collegiate Institute, where she remained until 1877. Her greatest pleasure there was performing in plays and pageants, although her parents opposed her desire to become an actress. After her return to Chiefswood, she devoted the next two years to visiting friends and writing poetry. Not all of Johnson's childhood was idyllic. Because her father fearlessly tried to eradicate illegal traffic in alcohol and timber on the reserve, he was severely beaten in 1865, clubbed and shot in 1873, and assaulted again in 1878. George never fully recovered from these attacks; he died in 1884. The family then abandoned Chiefswood and a gracious lifestyle to live in nearby Brantford. After Smoke Johnson's death in 1886, Johnson assumed her great-grandfather Jacob Johnson's Indian name, signing all her poems "E. Pauline Johnson" and "Tekahionwake."

PAULINE JOHNSON
"There are those who think they pay me a compliment in saying I am just like a white woman. I am an Indian, and my aim, my joy, my pride, is to sing the glories of my people."
E. Pauline Johnson (1911) Dressed conventionally here, Pauline Johnson adapted Indian dress for her dramatic recitations which she began in 1892 [Shiela Johnston] Pauline Johnson was a cultural ambassador, a link between an ancient, native Canada and a modern, largely European community. She knew and could represent both. Bringing two very different but strong-rooted cultures into closer contact and understanding, she was a powerful literary influence.

Her Majesty's Guest
by E. Pauline Johnson
(Tekahionawake)
from The Moccasin Maker
William Briggs, Toronto, 1913. I have never been a good man, but then I have never pretended to be one, and perhaps that at least will count in my favor in the day when the great dividends are declared. My friends, however, still credit me with one virtue; that is an absolute respect for my neighbor's wife, a feeling which, however, does not extend to his dollars. His money is mine if I can get it, and to do myself justice I prefer getting it from him honestly, at least without sufficient dishonesty to place me behind prison bars. Some experience has taught me that when a man is reduced to getting his living, as I do, by side issues and small deals, there is no better locality for him to operate than around the borders of some Indian Reserve. The pagan Indian is an unsuspicious fool. You can do him up right and left. The Christian Indian is as sharp as a fox, and with a little gloved handling he will always go in with you on a few lumber and illicit whiskey deals, which means that you have the confidence of his brethren and their dollars at the same time. The Government at Ottawa awoke, stretched, yawned, then printed some flaring posters and stuck them around the border villages. The posters were headed by a big print of the British Coat of Arms, and some large type beneath announced terrible fines and heavy imprisonments for anyone caught hauling Indian timber off the Reserve, or hauling whiskey on to it. Then the Government rubbed its fat palms together, settled itself in its easy chair, and snored again.

    Emily Pauline Johnson (1861-1913)
Pauline Johnson was an extremely popular Métis poet of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Due to her reputation as a "popular" writer, her work was discounted by academics, yet her name is widely known to the general public to this day. As a poet with two traditions, Johnson bridged the gulf between her Native and European backgrounds. Her work presents pride in her cultural heritage, as well as the paradox of writing English poetry on Native themes for a non-Native audience. Johnson was born on March 10, 1861 on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford,Ontario. She was the daughter of the head chief, G.H. Johnson, a Mohawk leader, and his English wife, Emily Susanna Howells. Johnson’s informal education made her familiar with the Victorian poets and she was also told tales and legends by her Mohawk grandfather. It was these two streams of culture which she combined in her literary work. Her writings showed both a passion for First Nations legends and cultural values, and a heroic tone of English poetry. Johnson’s early poetry appeared in the New York magazine Gems of Poetry in 1884 and thereafter in other magazines in Britain and North America. She was hailed by Theodore Watts-Dunton as an authentic "Indian" voice in Canadian poetry in his review of

    Review by Darleen Golke. excerpt:
Pauline bows her head; there is no applause, not even a whimper of protest from the audience. She is sure she has offended them all and has already turned to flee from the stage when suddenly they are on their feet, clapping wildly and shouting "Bravo!" and "Encore!" Astonished, she turns back to them, bows again, then walks quickly from the stage. The applause goes on and on. She can't believe it! They liked her poem! In the wings, a smiling Yeigh is waiting for her, grateful that she has saved his literary evening and his reputation. He leads her back to centre stage, and when the applause at last dies down, he promises his audience that Pauline will recite again after the intermission. "You're the star of my show!" he tells her as he escorts her backstage again. This is all overwhelming for Pauline because, although she is thirty-two years old, this is the first time she has ever recited one of her poems in public. In the fall of 1999, XYZ Publishing launched a new series, "Quest Library," featuring 10,000-word narrative biographies of Canadians aimed primarily at social studies and Canadian history students. Among the early offerings, Betty Keller, author of an extensively researched 1981 biography of Pauline Johnson, presents the talented writer and performer as the "first aboriginal voice of Canada." Keller focuses on the years between Johnson's debut as a recital artist in 1892 and her death in 1913.
