E. Pauline Johnson - Tehakionwake
Encouraged by the efforts of Richard Pilant and other members of the Institute of
Iroquoian Studies in Brantford Ontario, the Canadian Post Office issued a stamp in
1961 to commemorate the one hundredth anniverary of E. Pauline Johnson's birth. Chiefswood
Chiefswood, the family home on the Six Nations Reserve where Pauline Johnson grew up, reflected the family's dual cultural perspective, with the door facing the road travelled by the white man mirroring the door facing the river travelled by the people of the reserve. "I am an Indian, and my aim, my joy and my pride is to sing the glories of my own people. Ours was the race that gave the world its measure of heroism, its standard of physical prowess. Ours was the race that taught the world that avarice veiled by any other name is crime, and ours was the faith that taught men to live without greed and to die without fear."
- Quotation attributed to Pauline Johnson by Ernest Thompson Seton

E. Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake), Canadian poet by Susan Keeping
"Myself? Well, I am only a Mohawk with an ambition to show that even an Indian can do something in the world." E. Pauline Johnson Emily Pauline Johnson was born on March 10, 1861 on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario, Canada. She was a Mohawk Indian; her Indian name was Tekahionwake. Her family and friends called her Pauline. She was one of four children (two girls and two boys) born to George Henry Martin Johnson and Emily Suzanna Howells. Her mother was the sister-in-law of an Anglican missionary on the Six Nations Reserve. The Johnson family name came from Sir William Johnson who was Pauline's great-grandfather's godfather. Pauline's grandmother was English, she was brought up as a Mohawk Indian after having been kidnapped in a raid. Her grandfather was Chief "Smoke" Johnson, Indian name Sakeyengwaraton. Pauline grew up in a mansion named Chiefswood on the outskirts of the Six Nations Reserve. Many notable people of the area paid visits to the family. Pauline was very close to her grandfather who used to tell her stories about the past and Indian legends. Pauline was educated mostly at home by her mother. She did have a governess for two years. She also attended an Indian day school for 3 years, and Central Collegiate in Brantford for 2 years. She finished school in 1879.

Pauline Johnson - Tekahionwake 1861-1913 is a biography of Pauline Johnson, poet-performer of Mohawk and English background. This scrapbook of anecdotes, letters, poetry, archival photographs and illustrations celebrates the life of a Canadian entertainer who travelled widely throughout Canada, United States and England during the Victorian era. Interspersed throughout the text are 40 poems that did not appear in Johnson's classic volume, Flint and Feather. From letters and articles written by the entertainer we can see the scope of her interests and influences. Sheila Johnston has collected material by and about Pauline Johnson that portrays a complex woman of mixed heritage who truly was a "Canadian" hero. The words and images of Pauline speak for themselves with little analysis from Johnston making for a book that will appeal to the general public.

    Ah ! but they hated him, those Huron braves, Him who had flung their warriors into graves, Him who had crushed them underneath his heel, Whose arm was iron, and whose heart was steel To allsave me, Ojistoh, chosen wife Of my great Mohawk, white star of his life.
    Ah ! but they hated him, and councilled long With subtle witchcraft how to work him wrong ; How to avenge their dead, and strike him where His pride was highest, and his fame most fair. Their hearts grew weak as women at his name : They dared no war-path since my Mohawk came With ashen bow, and flinten arrow-head To pierce their craven bodies ; but their dead Must be avenged. Avenged ? They dared not walk In day and meet his deadly tomahawk ; They dared not face his fearless scalping knife ;
