Fork Branch Church Fork Branch Church is located on Rt 100 (Dennys Road) just west of Rt. 13 south of Cheswold. It sits on land that orginally was part of Jolley's Neck Farm settled by William Hansor in 1735. The last portion of the property was sold in 1861 by Benjamin and Sally Ann Hansor Durham, both descendants of the original owner. Benjamin and Sally Ann are buried behind the church. The church itself is no longer used by members of the community but the graveyard is still in use. The cemetery is in two sections: the oldest section is behind the church and many of the grave markers have been consumed by the encroaching woods. The newer portion is directly across the road. See also Mitsawokett for additional information. Entries below were made on 6/9/00.
The dates have been standardized in format. Entries in quotes are inscriptions copied from the markers. Other entries are comments. The listing is not in strict alphabetical order because I have grouped together individuals appearing on the same grave stone. I have also tried to keep together individuals grouped in the same "plot". NAMES: DATES: Inscription/Remarks Waldon K. Beckett, Jr.

Family History
The research into our family line takes us back to the early 18th century when William Rye was born; possibly in 1709. He had a first marriage with no known issue but his second marriage to Mary Hulse in 1758, resulted in following generations. These origins were in Kent and to some it is thought that the surname originated from Normandy. There is a village there named Ryes where Hubert de Ryes, a favourite of William the Conqueror, lived and it is thought that he, or his sons were rewarded with lands in England after the conquest. Our particular ancestor moved to Carlton-in-Lindrick, near Worksop, Notts around 1838. The family has diverged widely since then and through the Internet we have now found distant relatives in the United States and Australia. Anyone interested in more specific details can contact us at ryes@ryes.co.uk

Elizabeth Shoun and James O. Speer
Elizabeth Shoun (1796-1881) married James O. Speer (c. 1790-1872) on 3 March 1814, in Carter County, Tennessee. James' gravestone is spelled Spear, but most of the children used the spelling Speer, and that is what we will do. This family lived across the state line, in Virginia. To this marriage were born eleven children which are listed below, along with their year of birth and eath, the name of their spouse(s), and year of marriage:
(1) Rebecca Speer (1) William Stuart (1843)
(2) Ephriam Allison (2) Arthur O. Speer Elizabeth Smith (1843) (3) Jane Speer Levi "Lee" Farris (1838) (4) Elizabeth Speer William H. Ketchum (1840) (5) Barbara Speer David S. Greer (1843) (6) Susannah Speer James E. Ketchum (1845) (7) Eleanor "Ellen" Speer C. E. "John" Ray (1848) (8) Mary "Polly" Speer Andrew Greer (1844) (9) Leonard Napolean Speer Elizabeth Hannah Wilson (1852) (10) Sarah C. "Sallie" Speer John Lamberson (c. 1860) (11) Margaret Isabelle Speer John F. Fritz (1854)
The following covers the families of each of the above eleven children:
(1) Rebecca Speer (1815- ?) married twice, first to William Stuart (or Stewart) on 20 May 1843 in Virginia. To this marriage were born two children. We are unaware of whether William died or there was a divorce, as Rebecca married a second time to Ephriam Allison. We have no record of any children born to this second marriage.

Brummett Cemetery
The Brummett Cemetery is located about 5 miles Northeast of the Bigfoot Post Office off Texas Highway 173 (from Devine to Jourdanton) on County Road 227. The Texas State Historical marker at the Cemetery reads "Brummett Cemetery - Between Old Laredo Road and Fort Ewell Road, in a locality accessible to the Pioneers, this cemetery was in use by 1860, as shown by gravestone of Elijah Ross, aged two. The burial ground was deeded to the public by Mrs. Kizzie Brummett on Sept. 21, 1889. Interments have included John T. Brummett (1815-81), the husband and father of the donors, Two Brummett daughters; Noted early Texas James Washington Winters (1817 - 1903), a veteran of The Battle of San Jacinto; also many Winters descendants. There are now (1974) about 275 graves." The plate on the gate reads: "In memory of my grandparents, Simon and Nancy Frazier" by Roland Frazier, February 1990. This survey was taken on December 28, 1997 by Tom Graham, and includes 399 marker listings. Efforts were made to assure the accuracy of this listing, but I could have made errors in reading of stones, and in transcribing the information to the web page. If you see any errors in this listing, please contact me. (Note that the gravestone of Elijah Ross mentioned on the Historical Marker was not found. There are many marked but unidentified graves and some markers are not legible.) Cemetery Listing Name Born Died Notes Links Adams, John Scott
