    Description: Joaquin Miller is another short easy ride appropriate for beginners or those looking for an easy day. The route goes out Tunnel and across Skyline to Joaquin Miller. But, instead of heading right to Redwood, it instead heads left and returns to Berkeley via neighborhood streets (and a bike path) in Claremont, a neighborhood of Oakland. The way back is tricky so make sure you go with someone who knows where they're going the first time. Distance: 20.35 miles
    Climbing: 2112 ft.
    Difficulty: Easy
    Time: 1.25-1.75 hrs. Mile 0.0 - Sproul Plaza to Tunnel Road. Mile 6.34 - Continue straight on Skyline past Grizzly Peak. Mile 11.49 - Turn right on Joaquin Miller at the light. The descent is fast and wide-open, but mind the stop sign at the bottom. Mile 12.67

    The Little Brown Man (ca. 1904) Where now the brownie fisher-lad?
    His hundred thousand fishing-boats
    Rock idly in the reedy moats;
    His baby wife no more is glad.
    But yesterday, with all Nippon,
    Beneath his pink-white cherry-trees,
    In chorus with his brown, sweet bees,
    He careless sang, and sang right on.
    Take care! for he has ceased to sing;
    His startled bees have taken wing! His cherry-blossoms drop like blood; His bees begin to storm and sting; His seas flash lightning, and a flood Of crimson stains their wide, white ring; His battle-ships belch hell, and all Nippon is but one Spartan wall!

    At Vespers in Tokyo (1905) I.
    Of all fair trees to look upon,
    Of all trees pleasant to the sight
    Pink cherry trees of blest Nippon
    Pink cherry lanes of Tokio:
    Ten thousand cherry trees and each
    II.
    Of all fair lands to look upon,
    To feel, to breathe, at Orient dawn,
    I count this baby land the best, Because here all things rest and rest And all men love all things most fair And beautiful and rich and rare; And women are as cherry trees With treasures laden, brown with bees. III. Of all loved lands to look upon, Give me this love land of Nippon, Its bright, brave men, its maids at prayer

    A CALIFORNIA DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL Miller School reflects the recent changes in the population and economy of the City of Burbank perhaps more than any other elementary school in the District. The Miller tradition includes a dedicated staff, community involvement, high expectations, and a strong academic curriculum. Our goals for students focus on literacy and math. Students are actively engaged every day in learning activities which build speaking, reading, writing, and problem solving skills in meaningful context. Our goal for LEP students is competence in English. In addition, we believe all students will acquire social and critical thinking skills needed for responsible citizenship in a democratic society. Miller School is a school where students and staff want to be. Our attendance is significantly high (95%), verifying that students like coming to school each day to learn. Parents choose to have their children attend Miller School, even when they have the opportunity to transfer to other schools. Each and every day we are living our school motto - STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE!
    ATTENDANCE and TARDIES ATTENDANCE
    - is important. Student absences must be reported by parents or guardians in written form, in person, or by phone call. Unexcused absences will lead to consequences like detention, Saturday Schools, lowered grades, etc. Only students with excused absences will be allowed to make up work. In order to comply with state attendance regulations, and, more importantly, to ensure the best education for each child, we request parents send their child/children to school regularly and on time. When a child has been absent because of illness or other reasons, we require parents to send a note explaining the reason for the child's absence or tardiness. Please include on the note:

    I am very interested to know people's impressions of the schools in our neighborhood: Have parents been happy with Joaquin Elementary School? Did you send your child on to Montera Middle School? Were you happy with the program there? Did your child attend Skyline High School? Thanks for your opinions.
    Parent planning ahead
    My child attends Joaquin Miller, an Oakland public school, and I am very involved in school, as are most of parents, and present on campus daily. I never once heard a child swear, the facilities and bathrooms are always clean, children are supervised at all times, including special personnel to watch them and others to organize their games during the break, there is no record of any physical violence. When you come on campus (come visit!) children are cheerful, teachers are happy and friendly. Maria This is actually in response to a post in the Alameda Schools newsletter about Paden/Public Schools Generally. The writer refers to public schools being ''strangled'' by standardized curriculums and heavy testing, and makes the blanket reference that ''I'd bet it's the same at all public schools right now.''

    Did Oregon's first true laureates, Joaquin Miller, "the Poet of the Sierras," and Samuel Leonidas Simpson, "Oregon's sweetest singer," ever meet? It seems doubtful. If they didn't, it seems too bad. They had a lot in common. Both were lawyers, although neither practiced much law. Miller would hang out his shingle in Oro Fino, Idaho, but have to turn to pony express. A few years later in Canyon City, another gold rush town, he was elected judge. Sorting out truth from fiction in Miller's life is like perhaps unraveling a horse-hair lariat and weaving it back together blindfolded. Will that rope hold when you lasso the mustang? One of the most celebrated literary figures of the 19th century, Joaquin taught Buffalo Bill how to dress! Poet and critic William Everson [Brother Antoninus] hails Miller as the inceptor of the western literary archetype. When he began publishing in Oregon, he couldn't write for sour owl manure. He's still a mediocre poet whose reputation has spiraled downward, to the bottom of the canon. Why do some of us love him? He's a cosmic character and the consumate showman...the splendid poseur who wrote authentic, noble and beautiful tales of our American West. Some of these stories he really lived. Alan Rosenus of Urion Press republished The Selected Writings of Joaquin Miller. The best evoke Oregon: "In the Land of Clouds" (Mt. Hood), "An Old Oregonian in the Snow" (Did Miller observe Joe Meek facing off the Californians? It's believable.). "Bill Cross and His Pet Bear," set in the Willamette Valley, is one of the True Bear Stories (1900), a fun collection from Capra Press.

    for the Oakland Tribune
    May 6, 1906 I am too tired to think. I have been working on the stone wall all day, because the earthquake doesn't come this way and my walls will stand till the cows come home. Were I to rebuild San Francisco, I would put all that and San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Jose, Milpitas, Alameda, Oakland, and Berkeley, all in one broad city of one and two-story houses as in the City of Mexico, and I'd call the whole bunch San Francisco. The birds hid when the earthquake came. My chapel was open at the time. It is always open except when strangers come and I have to shut them out, but I was lying in bed after five and wide awake, for I always go to bed with the birds and get up with the birds, and the first I knew my cattle began to low and my cats came into my chapel, and I thought there might be a strange dog. I got up, and looked out for the dog, but it was nothing of the sort. The cats were under my great brass bed and I never witnessed such stillness. I lay down again and then the sun burst over the hills and San Francisco was silver and gold.
