Biographical Note:

Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) grew up in South Berwick, Maine, where she lived all of her life. She studied at Berwick Academy, but her schooling was frequently interrupted due to a delicate disposition. Instead, much of her knowledge came from tutors, immersion in the family library and the long trips she took with her father, Dr. Theodore Herman Jewett (Bowdoin 1834), to visit his patients around Maine. Dr. Jewett taught at Bowdoin College (1867-1869) and was president of the Medical Society of Maine (1877-1878). After his death in 1878, Sarah Orne Jewett developed a close friendship with Annie Adams Fields, with whom she traveled to the West Indies. Later the two women went to Europe, where they met with Alfred Lord Tennyson and Henry James. Jewett never married, instead focusing her efforts and energies on her writing. She is considered by many to be the prominent voice of a bygone New England sentimentality. Often her stories were first published in the

I
One evening, at the end of August, in Dunnet Landing, I heard Mrs. Todd's firm footstep crossing the small front entry outside my door, and her conventional cough which served as a herald's trumpet, or a plain New England knock, in the harmony of our fellowship. "Oh, please come in!" I cried, for it had been so still in the house that I supposed my friend and hostess had gone to see one of her neighbors. The first cold northeasterly storm of the season was blowing hard outside. Now and then there was a dash of great raindrops and a flick of wet lilac leaves against the window, but I could hear that the sea was already stirred to its dark depths, and the great rollers were coming in heavily against the shore. One might well believe that Summer was coming to a sad end that night, in the darkness and rain and sudden access of autumnal cold. It seemed as if there must be danger offshore among the outer islands. "Oh, there!" exclaimed Mrs. Todd, as she entered. "I know nothing ain't ever happened out to Green Island since the world began, but I always do worry about mother in these great gales. You know those tidal waves occur sometimes down to the West Indies, and I get dwellin' on 'em so I can't set still in my chair, nor knit a common row to a stocking. William might get mooning, out in his small bo't, and not observe how the sea was making, an' meet with some accident. Yes, I thought I'd come in and set with you if you wa'n't busy. No, I never feel any concern about 'em in winter 'cause then they're prepared, and all ashore and everything snug. William ought to keep help, as I tell him; yes, he ought to keep help."

I
The woods were already filled with shadows one June evening, just before eight o'clock, though a bright sunset still glimmered faintly among the trunks of the trees. A little girl was driving home her cow, a plodding, dilatory, provoking creature in her behavior, but a valued companion for all that. They were going away from whatever light there was, and striking deep into the woods, but their feet were familiar with the path, and it was no matter whether their eyes could see it or not. "'Afraid of folks,'" old Mrs. Tilley said to herself, with a smile, after she had made the unlikely choice of Sylvia from her daughter's houseful of children, and was returning to the farm. "'Afraid of folks,' they said! I guess she won't be troubled no great with 'em up to the old place!" When they reached the door of the lonely house and stopped to unlock it, and the cat came to purr loudly, and rub against them, a deserted pussy, indeed, but fat with young robins, Sylvia whispered that this was a beautiful place to live in, and she never should wish to go home. Suddenly this little woods-girl is horror-stricken to hear a clear whistle not very far away. Not a bird's-whistle, which would have a sort of friendliness, but a boy's whistle, determined, and somewhat aggressive. Sylvia left the cow to whatever sad fate might await her, and stepped discreetly aside into the bushes, but she was just too late. The enemy had discovered her, and called out in a very cheerful and persuasive tone, "Halloa, little girl, how far is it to the road?" and trembling Sylvia answered almost inaudibly, "A good ways."

u‹` BL : Psychology and Mythology in 20th Century American Women's Fiction This course will focus primarily on two American women writers: Sarah Orne Jewett, and Toni Morrison. In the first term we will study Sarah Orne Jewett who has been a guide and literary example to generations of women writers throughout the Twentieth Century. Through examining her work, this course will bring the student several steps closer to understanding the depth of American womenfs writing in the Twentieth Century. In the second term we will continue our study of psychology and mythology in Twentieth Century American womenfs fiction in our study of Toni Morrison who may well be the greatest living American writer. Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909), American novelist, was born in South Berwick, Maine, on September 3, 1849. She was a daughter of the physician Theodore H. Jewett (1851-1878), by whom she was greatly influenced, and whom she has portrayed in Country Doctor (1884). She studied at the Berwick Academy, and began her literary career in 1869, when she contributed her first story to the Atlantic Monthly. Her best work consists of short stories and sketches, such as those in, The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896). The People of Maine, with their characteristic speech, manners, and traditions, she describes with peculiar charm and realism

THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS
Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) was born and died in South Berwick, Maine. Her work was widely published and highly esteemed in her own lifetime. THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS (1896) is considered Jewett's finest work, described by Henry James as her "beautiful little quantum of achievement." Despite James's diminutives, the novel remains a classic. Because it is loosely structured, many critics view the book not as a novel, but a series of sketches; however, its structure is unified through both setting and theme. Jewett herself felt that her strengths as a writer lay not in plot development or dramatic tension, but in character development.
Indeed, she determined early in her career to preserve a disappearing way of life, and her novel can be read as a study of the effects of isolation and hardship on the inhabitants who lived in the decaying fishing villages along the Maine coast.
