Sarah Orne Jewett
Named for her paternal grandfather and grandmother, Theodora Sarah Orne Jewett was the second of three girls born to Theodore Herman and Caroline Frances Perry Jewett in the New England village of South Berwick, Maine. Descending on both sides from pre-Revolutionary families that had built up comfortable incomes from shipbuilding and seafaring, she was the daughter and granddaughter of physicians. As a child Jewett wished to become a doctor herself. Poor health thwarted that ambition even as it encouraged her close relationship with her father, who took her with him on medical calls to build up her strength. These trips through rural and small-town Maine provided her, by her own account, with material for her writing throughout her career.
Upon graduation from Berwick Academy in 1865, Jewett began writing short fiction. She also published poetry, literature for children, and two novels, one of which

Jewett's relatively unacknowledged novel "The Country of the Pointed Firs" is a masterpiece. Tightly constructed, beautifully written, thematically rich; top-of-the-line in every category. It's slow going at first, but grows on you once you see what Jewett is examining the interconnectedness of all people, even those who live far apart and have seemingly nothing in common. The bookshelf of any bona fide literature fan esp. fans of American lit. should not be without this little maste...

Sarah Orne Jewett's evocative sketches of village life in nineteenth-century Maine have earned her a place among the most important practitioners of American regional writing. Born in South Berwick, Maine, Jewett grew up steeped in the idioms and atmosphere of coastal New England. Her early experiences accompanying her father, a rural doctor, on house calls provided her with insight into the daily lives of the people who would eventually populate her fiction. Jewett's father encouraged her writing aspirations and instilled in her his taste for realistic description and restrained narrationqualities that characterized Jewett's best work.
As early as her teens, Jewett began writing and publishing fiction and poetry, placing one of her stories in the influential literary magazine the

Nor do I imagine my case will be helped if I state that I most often enjoy said beverage on Sunday nights during Booknotes on CSPAN, though as a general matter I do occasionally partake when I sit down to read, after we get the kids to bed. ThereI've said itthat monkey's off my back. Why here? Why now? Because, this book may be the sine qua non of tea-sipping books. Perhaps the central theme that we've been developing over the course of these reviews is the existence of a fundamental tension in human affairs, between the basically feminine desire for security and the basically masculine desire for freedom. We've examined many examples of the lattereverything from Huckleberry Finn to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest but good examples of the former have been rarer, presumably because I just read fewer women authors. (Though we have found some good examples, try particularly the

on the coast of Maine I cannot assign the Hyperborean Award to The Country of the Pointed Firs know The Modern Library edition contains the Country of the Pointed Firs , a most unusual novel in its entirety, plus four longer stories thematically bound with the mother book with an umbilical cord much stronger than that of the unity of characters and the setting. A charming and informative preface (a rarity, nowadays) enlightens us with respect to the structure of the book, and why some stories were not integrated into the larger work, although at a glance this was the most reasonable thing to do. Explanations aside, it is not really important how you read the stories now, whether you shall seek the proper place the additional stories might fit into the larger picture, or whether you shall think of

Sarah Orne Jewett was born in Berwick, Maine, to an old New England family. Her father was Theodore Herman Jewett and her mother was Caroline Frances.
Jewett grew up around books and devoured them constantly so it wasn't a wonder that she should show a propensity for writing.
As a young adult, she developed ties to a very strong female community. This circle constituted a powerful network which enabled women like Jewett to develop full-fledged careers, even amidst a conservative social environment which frowned upon proper ladies engaging in activities outside the home.
Jewett's best work was based on the Maine countryside, whose people and places she knew intimately and loved dearly throughout her entire life. Her work features the people she was most familiar with of the everyday world of villages and ordinary people. Jewett's work was largely forgotten and/or scorned after her rather successful lifetime

Sarah Orne Jewett was a regional writer who grew up in the coastal town of South Berwick, Maine. Her father was a country doctor who allowed his daughter to accompany him on his rounds; many of the rural people Jewett encountered inspired her later fiction. In 1869 one of Jewett's first stories was accepted for publication in the Atlantic Monthly by William Dean Howells. With Howells's encouragement, Jewett continued to craft tales about the rural inhabitants of "Deephaven," a fictional town based on the bygone days of South Berwick. Strong women populated her rural tales, and strong women comprised her friends in the artistic circles of Boston in the 1870s; Annie Adams Fields, wife of the late publisher James T. Fields, would be her closest companion from 1881 until her death. Jewett's works include A Country Doctor A White Heron (1886), and her classic

SARAH ORNE JEWETT (1849-1909) was born and died in South Berwick, Maine. Her father was the region's most distinguished doctor and, as a child, Jewett often accompanied him on his round of patient visits. She began writing poetry at an early age and when she was only 19 her short story "Mr. Bruce" was accepted by the Atlantic Monthly. Her association with that magazine continued, and William Dean Howells, who was editor at that time, encouraged her to publish her first book, Deephaven (1877), a collection of sketches published earlier in the Atlantic Monthly. Through her friendship with Howells, Jewett became acquainted with Boston's literary elite, including Annie Fields, with whom she developed one of the most intimate and lasting relationships of her life. The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896) is considered Jewett's finest work, described by Henry James as her "beautiful little quantum of achievement." Despite James's diminutives, the novel remains a classic. Because it is loosely structured, many critics view the book not as a novel, but a series of sketches; however, its structure is unified through both setting and theme. Jewett herself felt that her strengths as a writer lay not in plot development or dramatic tension, but in character development. Indeed, she determined early in her career to preserve a disappearing way of life, and her novel can be read as a study of the effects of isolation and hardship on the inhabitants who lived in the decaying fishing villages along the Maine coast.

Sarah Orne Jewett Corbis-Bettmann (1849-1909), author Born on September 3, 1849, in South Berwick, Maine, Theodora Sarah Jewett was often taken by her physician father on visits to the fishermen and farmers of the area, and she developed a deep and abiding love of their way of life and of the sights and sounds of her surroundings. These experiences, and reading in her family's ample library, formed the bulk of her education. Although she also attended the Berwick Academy, graduating in 1865, she considered her schooling insignificant compared to the learning she gained on her own. During her childhood she began to write of the perishing farms and neglected, shipless harbors around her. She published her first story, "Jenny Garrow's Lovers," in the Flag of Our Union in 1868 and followed it with "The Shipwrecked Buttons" in the Riverside Magazine for Young People and "Mr. Bruce" in the Atlantic Monthly in 1869. Her early pieces were signed "Alice Eliot" or "A.C. Eliot." Numerous later sketches of a New England town, "Deephaven," that resembled South Berwick, were published in the Atlantic Monthly and were collected in Deephaven (1877), her first book.

Looking back upon her brief friendship with Sarah Orne Jewett - to whom she dedicated O Pioneers! - Willa Cather wrote in "Miss Jewett" that she seemed a "lady in the old sense." "There was an ease, a graciousness, a light touch in conversation, a delicate unobtrusive wit. You quickly recognized that her gift with the pen was one of many charming personal attributes." Cather goes on to characterize Jewett's attachment to her town that was so visible in the last months of her life: "When she was at home, in South Berwick, there were the old friends of her childhood to whom she must always be accessible ... Every day, in every season of the year, she enjoyed the beautiful country in which she had the good fortune to be born. Her love of the Maine country and seacoast was the supreme happiness of her life" ( Not Under Forty ). Cather visited Jewett at her home in November of 1908, half a year before Jewett's death in 1909, seeing the house much as it can be seen today at its busy corner of Portland / Rte 4 and Main / Rte. 236. When Cather was preparing her 1925 edition of selected Jewett works, she visited Jewett's sister, Mary, and it is likely she stopped in South Berwick several other times after 1908.
