Comedy Title: The Dancing Partner: Clocks Author: Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927) Series: Comedy ISBN:
celophaned wrapped with 'message' envelope Most famous for his classic, comic novel Three Men in a Boat (1889), which describes a rowing holiday on the Thames enjoyed by three men and their dog, Jerome K. Jerome first published The Dancing Partner three years later in Novel Notes. It is about as black as humour can get. An inventor creates a machine that can dance with all the girls at new society balls, but the results are far from satisfactory. Still in mechanical vain, this edition includes Jerome's little-known short, comic essay, Clocks.

CALL and order with credit car Title: Here We Are A Telephone Call Author: Dorothy Parker (1893-1967) Series: Comedy ISBN:
celophaned wrapped with 'message' envelope Dorothy Parker is remembered as much today for her sparkling short stories as for her poems and her witty remarks. In Here We Are a newly wedded couple prepares for the first evening of a honeymoon in New York. Both he and she face the stark possibility that marriage may not be quite as jolly as they had each anticipated. In A Telephone Call Parker's satiric wit is focussed on a hapless and frantic girl as she waits impatiently by the telephone praying that her lover will ring.

42. Three Men In A Boat
In 1900, out of popular demand, Jerome K. Jerome (18591927) wrote Three Men on the Bummel, a tale about the same three men bicycling through Germany.

A Review of Jerome K. Jerome's
Three Men in a Boat The subtitle to Three Men in a Boat is "To say nothing of the dog!" who goes along on a "hilarious misadventure" up the Thames River in England in an open boat. But the dog Montmorency doesn't find the trip hilarious, nor do the men, who spend a good deal of time arguing over whose turn it is to row or tow the boat. Usually they end up blaming their troubles on the dog, whose "...ambition in life is to get in the way and be sworn at." Jerome and his friends, Harris and George, are not boatmen so continuously suffer the mistakes and bad luck that amateurs might rightfully expect. Jerome becomes exasperated when his two friends avoid sharing duties on the boat, but willingly admits, "It always does seem to me that I am doing more work than I should do." But the trip is challenging. Getting comfortable and still being friendly under their canvas during a rainstorm is a challenge. Or digging to the bottom of their hamper to find what they'd forgotten. Or putting a sail on their boat upside-down. Even eating their own cooking becomes a challenge, causing Jerome to concede, "What the eye does not see, the stomach does not get upset about." Although the Three Men in a Boat was celebrated for its humor when it was published in 1889, the history of English towns and villages in this autobiographical journal become almost a travel guide of the Thames. Jerome pokes fun at many kings and queens of England's past, and in 1999 Jeremy Lewis added an introduction, as well as notes at the end, which explain many of the historic places and events the author refers to.

The following may be useful in deciding whether to come to Oxford or whether you should go to Cambridge or somewhere else instead: Welcome to Oxford, city of dreaming spires and screaming tyres! Welcome to Carbon MonOxford! On an advertising hoarding on the Botley Road into Oxford Oxford is on the whole more attractive than Cambridge to the ordinary visitor; and the traveller is therefore recommended to visit Cambridge first or to omit it altogether if he cannot visit both. Baedeker's Great Britain Cambridge is a prettier university town than Oxford, because it has no Morris Works. Muriel Beadle, These Ruins Are Inhabited When the point had been duly settled, that Mr. Verdant Green was to receive a university education, the next question to be decided was, to which of the three Universities should he go? To Oxford Cambridge , or Durham ? But this was a matter which was soon determined upon. Mr. Green at once put Durham aside, on account of its infancy, and its wanting the prestige that attaches to the names of the two great Universities. Cambridge was treated quite as summarily, because Mr. Green had conceived the notion that nothing but Mathematics were ever thought or talked of there; and as he himself had always had an abhorrence of them from his youth up, when he was hebdomadally flogged for not getting-up his weekly propositions, he thought that his son should be spared some of the personal disagreeables that he himself had encountered; for Mr. Green remembered to have heard that the great Newton was horsed during the time that he was a Cambridge undergraduate, and he had a hazy idea that the same indignities were still practised there.

.A very pleasant reach on the River Thames. The village used to have its own bishops and the only Bishop's Palace in Berkshire, now totally ruined. King John stayed at the palace before going to sign the Magna Carta in 1215. J.K. Jerome mentions it in Three Men in a Boat Extract from Chapter XIV of Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927):
The river up to Sonning winds in and out through many islands, and is very placid, hushed, and lonely. Few folk, except at twilight, a pair or two of rustic lovers, walk along its banks. `Arry and Lord Fitznoodle have been left behind at Henley, and dismal, dirty Reading is not yet reached. It is a part of the river in which to dream of bygone days, and vanished forms and faces, and things that might have been, but are not, confound them.
We got out at Sonning, and went for a walk round the village. It is the most fairy-like little nook on the whole river. It is more like a stage village than one built of bricks and mortar. Every house is smothered in roses, and now, in early June, they were bursting forth in clouds of dainty splendour. If you stop at Sonning, put up at the "Bull," behind the church. It is a veritable picture of an old country inn, with green, square courtyard in front, where, on seats beneath the trees, the old men group of an evening to drink their ale and gossip over village politics; with low, quaint rooms and latticed windows, and awkward stairs and winding passages.

"Cheeses," from Chapter IV of Three Men in a Boat
by Jerome K. Jerome (Jerome Klapka), 1859-1927 I remember a friend of mine, buying a couple of cheeses at Liverpool. Splendid cheeses they were, ripe and mellow, and with a two hundred horse-power scent about them that might have been warranted to carry three miles, and knock a man over at two hundred yards. I was in Liverpool at the time, and my friend said that if I didn't mind he would get me to take them back with me to London, as he should not be coming up for a day or two himself, and he did not think the cheeses ought to be kept much longer.
"Oh, with pleasure, dear boy," I replied, "with pleasure."
I called for the cheeses, and took them away in a cab. It was a ramshackle affair, dragged along by a knock-kneed, broken-winded somnambulist, which his owner, in a moment of enthusiasm, during conversation, referred to as a horse. I put the cheeses on the top, and we started off at a shamble that would have done credit to the swiftest steam-roller ever built, and all went merry as a funeral bell, until we turned the corner. There, the wind carried a whiff from the cheeses full on to our steed. It woke him up, and, with a snort of terror, he dashed off at three miles an hour. The wind still blew in his direction, and before we reached the end of the street he was laying himself out at the rate of nearly four miles an hour, leaving the cripples and stout old ladies simply nowhere.
