At Home on the Earth
A New Selection of the Later Writings of Richard Jefferies
Jeremy Hooker; Selected and Introduced by Jeremy Hooker Edition: Paperback Format: 13 woodcuts by Agnes Miller Parker Pages: 6 x 9.25, 176 pages ISBN: Publisher: Green Books Book overview: Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) has long been recognized as an interpreter of English country life and a natural observer with few if any equals. He was an idealist, who believed that human beings could free themselves from outworn ideas and achieve a greatly enlarged spiritual and physical capacity. A "poet-naturalist" with an ecological vision who understood the place of human beings in relation to the "household" of life on Earth, he was both mystic and realist, and his writings show the beauty of "wild England" but also the harsh conditions of laboring life in the Victorian countryside. In his art of seeing, Jefferies was a precursor of modernist techniques, and an influence on modern nature writings and poetry. About the Author Jeremy Hooker 's new selection represents Jefferies at his best, and reveals his contemporary significance. Hooker, a poet and critic who has made a special contribution to the "poetry of place," is the author of ten collections of poetry, and his critical writings include

One of the two wonderful classical guitar collections This book is one of the 2 most desirable and collectible books on classical guitars (the other one is: Collection of Fine Spanish Guitars from Torres to the Present by Urlik, Sheldon). The figures are superb and the text informative. The hard cover edition is better in the following senses: 1. The hard cover edition is a limited edition (6000 copies only).
2. It is like a textbook which can be opened fully on its back. Easy for reading and scanning.
3. It's got a hard protective slipcase However, getting the softcover edition might be your choice for its price and availability. Incredible Book If you are a lover of guitars, specifically classical guitars, you owe it to yourself to purchase this book. There is nothing else like it. Great photography, details on some of the best guitars from some of the best makers...Romanillos, Smallman, Bernabe...They are all here. Inclusively, the book covers players (Williams, Bream, Segovia) as well as an in depth look at wood and the guitar market today. Great stuff and at ..., an incredible bargain.

The Ridgeway
The town of Swindon is just a few miles - and within sight of - the Ridgeway, which is possibly the oldest road in Europe. Stone Age man once walked along its route - not only long before the likes of Stonehenge came into being, but even before Britain was an island. Today it stretches from Overton Hill, near Avebury, in the west, and runs for about 40 miles, crossing the Thames at Streatley. What we now call the Ridgeway Path then continues for another 45-mile section until it reaches Ivinghoe, north east of Aylesbury, following the course of another ancient path (though not quite so ancient as the original Ridgeway) which is called the Icknield Way. This section is much different in character to the part which runs close to Swindon, passing through beech woodlands, and, strictly speaking, is a continuation of the older Ridgeway. It is all part of a continuous route that once stretched from the south western shores of the English Channel to the North Sea at Hunstanton on The Wash. The Ridgeway is therefore the oldest surviving relic from our human past and Swindon is fortunate to have this remarkable ancient route on its doorstep. It is even more fortunate that the section that transverses the Marlborough Downs and passes up to the Vale of the White Horse is one of the most spectacular of all.

OAS_AD('Top'); The Ogbournes Wiltshire is the home of one of the most unusual and probably shortest river names, and that is the River Og!! It runs north to south and then joins the Kennet between Marlborough and Mildenhall. Much of the time there is always water in the lower part but the upper reaches are quite often dry for most of the year, which is commonplace among the streams on the chalklands. The little valley in which the river runs is alongside the Marlborough to Swindon Road and was once used by a railway line and is the old Roman road from Mildenhall. Ogbourne Maizey, or St Michael which is strange as it has no church is the southernmost of the villages, it has a Jacobean Manor house which has bands of sarsen stone, flint and later additions of brick. On the main doorway is the date '1636'. In some places tall arched Georgian windows have been inserted though there are some original stone mullions. In the little lane to Rockley there are some 17th century cottages and racing stables were added in 1903.

What Great Men and Women Think of Religion: An Introduction
great misconception commonly held is that those who are religious are perforce ethical or moral. The real truth, however, is that our jails are filled with the religious and irreligious alike while the most unlikely criminal is the free thinker whether his philosophical search takes a spiritual or atheistic turn. It takes but little reflection to understand why the belief in God does not necessarily imply honesty, peacefulness, happiness, or even a love or devotion toward God for that matter.
Putting aside the age Jefferies wished to live in, organized religions historically have always had the uncanny knack for separating, nay keeping at odds, humanity and its divinity, not to mention anything holy. Rudyard Kipling once observed that "Religion has no influence on conduct." From what I have found, however, it seems, with all due respect, that Kipling was in error, or at best he was being very optimistic. Religious beliefs can very well influence one's behavior.
What Kipling meant, of course, was that religion has no influence to better or improve one's conduct. If religion is treated with superficial interest, then indeed one's conduct does not change for better or worse. However, if religion's influence, or lack of it, stopped there history would not be so full of cruelties and intolerance. The nature of religion when it is organized is to consider itself superior to other religions, beliefs, and systems of practice. It feeds off such an unhealthy complex. It is questionable whether an organized religion can even
