Here is a hyperlink to the Microsoft Encarta home page.   http://www.encarta.msn.com James, William (1842-1910), American philosopher and psychologist, who developed the philosophy of pragmatism. Psychology James's first book, the monumental Principles of Psychology (1890), established him as one of the most influential thinkers of his time. The work advanced the principle of functionalism in psychology, thus removing psychology from its traditional place as a branch of philosophy and establishing it among the laboratory sciences based on experimental method. In the next decade James applied his empirical methods of investigation to philosophical and religious issues. He explored the questions of the existence of God, the immortality of the soul, free will, and ethical values by referring to human religious and moral experience as a direct source. His views on these subjects were presented in the lectures and essays published in such books as The Will to Believe and Other Essays in Popular Philosophy (1897), Human Immortality (1898), and The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902). The last-named work is a sympathetic psychological account of religious and mystical experiences.

It aims to "revitalize research on Mead's work by facilitating access to his publications". The bulk of the site is given over to a collection of electronic texts. These are organised by author: George Mead, John Dewey, William James, James Mark Baldwin, Charles Horton Cooley, William Isaac Thomas, Edward Sapir and a selection of others, including Charles Darwin. There are also timelines for some of the authors. Additional features include indexes of people mentioned in Mead's works and authors of commentaries on Mead's work. The project has been run under the auspices of the Department of Sociology, Brock University, Canada. Sociology Psychology History of Medicine, 20th Cent. History of Medicine, 19th Cent. ... Historical Note
William James was an American philosopher and psychologist. The manuscript for this book was begun by James in March of 1909. He left it unfinished upon his death in August of 1910. James left a memorandum stating that this document, when published, should be considered: "fragmentary and unrevised" and should be called "a beginning of an introduction to philosophy." James' friend and pupil, Dr.Horace Meyer Kallen oversaw the publishing of the manuscript (in consultation with Ralph Barton Perry and Henry James, Jr.) and reconciled the various manuscript drafts. The book was published as: James, William, 1842-1910.

1890 publicerade James sin bok The Principles of Physiology 1890. 1902 publicerade han The Varieties of Religious Experience . William James was raised in a highly intellectual household: his father Henry, Sr. was a Swedenborgian theologian, his sister Alice wrote lengthy, literary diaries, and his brother Henry, Jr. became a renowned novelist. William himself studied art and geology before recieving a professional medical degree from Harvard university, where he taught for thirty-five years. Despite an energetic constitution, James struggled throughout life with such severe bouts of hypochondria, melancholy, and depression that he regarded himself as persisting only by means of a deliberate effort of will. Upon his death, however, a friend expressed great respect for James's wisdom, integrity, and equanimity. Work in psychology with Hugo Munsterburg at Harvard resulted in publication of James's Principles of Psychology the classic exposition of a discipline in transition from reliance upon anecdotal introspection toward its experimental foundations as a natural science. James himself emphasized the notion of the individual self or person as a continuous "stream of consciousness " capable of exercising free will In Pragmatism: A New Name for some Old Ways of Thinking (1907) James offered significant expansions of C.S. Peirce
