Henry James
Henry James was born in New York City in 1843. His father, Henry James Sr, was a wealthy man and a well-known intellectual, whose friends included Thoreau, Emerson and Hawthorne. The affluence the family inherited from his Irish grandfather allowed James to live in comfort; he never made much money from his writing. As a young man, James traveled between Europe and America, and studied law at Harvard briefly at the age of nineteen. He published his first short story, A Tragedy of Errors , two years later, and began writing full-time. His first novel, Watch and Ward (1871), was written on a voyage through Venice and Paris. During his years in Europe James wrote several novels portraying Americans living abroad. Between 1906 and 1910 James revised many of his tales and novels for the New York edition of his complete works. Before his death in 1916, he also completed his autobiography, which included A Small Boy and Others Notes of a Son Aand Brother (1914) and The Middle Years , which was published posthumously.

One story tl)at particularly chilled tl-te group involved the visitation of a ghost to a young boy. When it was finished, a man in the group, Douglas, asked: "If the child gives the effect, another turn of the screw, what do you say to two children?" Weeks later, when Douglas was able to obtain the manuscript containing this second story, he read the narrative to his listeners, after prefacing it with a bit of background. The tale's author was a woman who had been his sister's governess, and Douglas was the only person to whom she had revealed her dreadful tale before her death ... On a pleasant June afternoon, a young lady of twenty, "the youngest of several daughters of a poor country parson," arrived in London to answer an advertisement for the position of governess.

James, Henry (1843-1916)
page: Though closeted, Henry James had a number of intimate relations with young men, and his sexual orientation imbued his fiction. James was born in New York City, on April 15, 1843. He belonged to a prominent American family, whose cultural milieu consisted of the intelligentsia of New England, and whose scholarly and social connections extended throughout Europe. His father, Henry James, Sr., was a noted Swedenborgian philosopher and man of letters, a friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Thomas Carlyle. Sponsor Message.
Because Henry Sr. favored frequent changes of scenery, the James children spent their childhood divided between the United States and Europe, and were educated on both continents. The family returned to New England before war broke out between the states, and while helping to extinguish a fire in Newport, Henry Jr. sustained what he later called "an obscure hurt." This injury became the source of much biographical and critical speculation about the cause of the author's lack of sexual interest in women. Henry's eldest brother, William, who went on to become an acclaimed philosopher and psychologist, showed early artistic and academic promise. Henry Jr. attempted to define a space for himself distinct from both his brother and his father. In the early 1860s, Henry began to write short stories and reviews for the

James, Henry James, Henry, , American novelist and critic, b. New York City. A master of the psychological novel, James was an innovator in technique and one of the most distinctive prose stylists in English. He was the son of Henry James , Sr., a Swedenborgian theologian, and the brother of William James , the philosopher. Educated privately by tutors in Europe and the United States, he entered Harvard law school in 1862. Encouraged by William Dean Howells and other members of the Cambridge literary circle in the 1860s, James wrote critical articles and reviews for the Atlantic Monthly, a periodical in which several of his novels later appeared in serial form. He made several trips to Europe, and while there he became associated with such notable literary figures as Turgenev and Flaubert . In 1876 he settled permanently in London and became a British subject in 1915. James devoted himself to literature and travel, gradually assuming the role of detached spectator and analyst of life. In his early novels, including

James, Henry Sources American novelist, short story writer and man of letters. A major figure in the history of the novel, James is celebrated as a master craftsman who brought his great art and impeccable technique to bear in the development of abiding moral themes. He had an approach to the art of fiction that resembled the research of the careful historian. He entered Harvard Law School in 1862, but withdrew at the end of a year because he wanted to write seriously. He traveled back and forth to England and Paris, publishing stories and The Europeans , and Daisy Miller . In 1879 he published a book in which he paid tribute to Hawthorne as a writer who accomplished much despite his surroundings. Washington Square , published in 1881, and first serialized in Harper's , reflected his boyhood neighborhood. At the turn of the century, he published three long and complex novels, The Wings of the Dove The Ambassadors The Golden Bowl . He returned to the US in 1904, touring the country and writing, upon his return to England, The American Scene . He became a British subject in 1915 as a measure of support for the British cause in World War I. This is James, Henry
