This paper was written Spring Semester, 1999, under Michael Gagnon, in the History Department, at the University of Georgia, as a requirement for completion of History 4000, "Social History of Antebellum America." An Education for the Athens Woman, 1801-1860
R. Brooke Romanowski
Athens, Georgia has been a focal point of learning since its charter in 1785. Centered around the University of Georgia, Athens succeeded past the expectations of the university in the nineteenth century to produce not only higher learning for men, but also for women. A British traveler, James Silk Buckingham, wrote of an Athens party in 1839:
"the ladies, though so young, appeared to have more resources for conversation, and more power, as well as ease or freedom of expression."
The women of Antebellum Athens differed from others Buckingham had met in his travels because they were educated and more liberated than in other cities during this pre-war era. Yet, why were these females so advanced at this stage in history? Many reasons determine this result. These women grew up in a cultured city and therefore, lived with higher expectations of scholarship. Athens, Georgia evolved into a city that educated everyone because it was associated with the University of Georgia. Education was an important part of its existence that shaped the city into a refined, scholastic oasis in the South.

History
A Short History
At first glance, Marlow has the allure of a modern town, although further investigation brings to light the fine period (mainly Georgian) buildings of the High Street and West Street. In the 11th century, Marlow was ringed by monastic foundations, and the remains of a 12th century chapel and crypt still exist at Widmer Farm. In St. Peter Street you will find The Old Parsonage and Deanery, which form part of the finest 14th century house in Buckinghamshire. Marlow Place, which dates from 1721, formed part of the Royal Military College before it moved to Sandhurst in 1812. The town's fine suspension bridge was built from 1829-1832 and just along the river is the superb 18th century Court Garden House, now part of a leisure complex. The real growth in Marlow, however, has been since World War II when commuters mainly from the South discovered the delights of this rural town and many businesses now have offices here. The population has trebled since then. Those of you interested in family histories might like to consult the Buckinghamshire Genealogical Society's website
In Detail
In 1085 King William I sent out his men, rating officers, and let them find out about the country; they came to Marlow. The

Archival Sources
Works of Reference
An excellent starting-place for Victorianists in search of archival resources is Richard Storey and Lionel Madden, Primary Sources for Victorian Studies: A Guide to the Location and Use of Unpublished Materials (London: Phillimore, 1977). This was supplemented in 1987 by Richard Storey's booklet, Primary Sources for Victorian Studies: An Updating , published in the series "Occasional Papers in Bibliography" by the Victorian Studies Centre, University of Leicester, Leicester LE1 7RH. Both works focus on materials available in the United Kingdom. Historians may find particularly helpful a booklet (now online) by R. J. Olney called Manuscript Sources for British History : Their Nature, Location and Use (1995), which not only gives much generally useful advice but includes an up-to-date bibliography of helpful guides and location registers. (Available in hardcopy form from the Institute of Historical Research .) The best general guide to archival repositories for British history is J. Foster and K. Sheppard, British Archives: A Guide to Archival Resources in the United Kingdom (3rd edn., 1995). On the Web may be found:

Marriage Records of Ashe County, North Carolina
Compiled by Minnie Patrick Osborne and Jeffrey C. Weaver
Introduction The marriage records of Ashe County, North Carolina are incomplete. Some years ago the earliest records were either stolen or burned or both. The 2,100 marriage records presented here are from what remains in the court house in Jefferson, NC; the State Archives, Raleigh, NC; the Library of Congress and National Archives, Washington, DC; and other sources, i.e., pension applications and family bibles when available. Some of these early records are very difficult to read and the best possible transcription has been made. Alternative or modern spellings are given when it seemed necessary for clarity or serious doubt arose. There are conflicting dates on some on the documents, with one stating one thing and another conflicting with that, in such cases both pieces of information are presented with no claim to the correctness of either. The amount of information given for some marriage records is greater than for others, the pertinent information available is presented, if not, you may assume that it was not given in the original document. Formatting of this transcript has been something of a problem because there were different types of sources used, therefore some blanks will be found as you search for information. The basic format will be as follows:
