THOMAS(4) of CLARK CO., OH 1777-1856 [s/o William, Jr.] Traditionally, Thomas is the only child of Richard, Jr. Cora Hiatt recorded this link as a last minute addition to her book, because of a letter she had received. However this link has never been proven and the validity of this relationship is improbable. Little of Richard, Jr. is known outside of his service in the Revolution. No trace of his marriage, children or death has been uncovered. He is known to have been in Baltimore, MD continuously to 1790, a dozen years after Thomas was born in Berkeley Co., VA. That Thomas was born in Virginia and married there, amidst the Virginia Chenoweths, make it more likely that Thomas was of some other line than the Baltimore based Richard(3). The natural spot for Thomas is the oldest son of William, Jr. We know by William's will written 1816 that his son Thomas was alive. Moreover Thomas has a presence in the same areas that other members of the family of William(2) settled and lived. [ SEE BACKGROUND PAGE The daybook of his grandson gives Thomas date of birth as May 10, 1777. Thomas married in Berkeley Co., at about the age of 23, to Elizabeth Watson, who was born in Maryland and probably the daughter of Henry Watson, who was the suretor at the marriage. Their first child was born there, but shortly afterwards Thomas and Elizabeth left for Ohio. He acquired land in Warren Co., which he later sold to William S., the father-in-law of his 3 brothers. Thomas and Elizabeth settled in Harmony Township, Clark County, OH. This is where his uncle, Absolom would also settle a few years later. Thomas and Elizabeth would produce six more children and live in Clark Co. for the rest of their lives. Here, Thomas helped found the town of Lisbon. Thomas served during the War of 1812, but probably was not involved in any actual battles. He lived to be about 78, he and Elizabeth dying the same year. He and Elizabeth are buried in the cemetery at Lisbon, Clark Co., OH.

    INDIAN WAR VETERAN MEDALS RECORDS
2.2 cu. ft. and 18 reels microfilm
DESCRIPTION: In 1905 the legislature passed an act entitled "Medals for Indian War Veterans" (ch. 86 in Laws of the State of Utah....1905. The Star Printing Co., Salt Lake City, 1905.). This authorized the governor and secretary of state to procure a medal for each of the veterans who actually served in suppressing Indian hostilities in Utah during the years 1850 to 1872, inclusive. These forms are the applications for a medal submitted by the veteran or next of kin. Related correspondence also is included as are a few actual medals which were never distributed. Most of the applications relate to service in the Black Hawk wars. Other confrontations mentioned on the forms include the Walker War, Navajo raids, Shosone war, Paiute raids, Tintic skirmishes, etc. The form required county; veteran's age; birthplace; current residence; name of war in which served; enrollment date; rank; commander's name; and places, years, and type of actual service followed by the applicant's signature. If being completed by next of kin, there was a blank for the applicant to state his or her relationship to the veteran. The statement was witnessed by a notary and attested to by two individuals with personal knowledge of the applicant's service. The signature of the commander stating that the individual was entitled to a medal might also be included. The back of the form gives the date received, date approved, and the signatures of the governor and secretary of state.
