Students: - "The Devil and Tom Walker" is an interesting story. It takes irony and satire and uses them to create an interesting story, full of gore and evil. Irving's stories are very entertaining. However, I don't understand how women could like his stories. In almost every short story of his, Irving finds some way to humiliate the woman when she dies or make it as gruesome as possible. Now we know how Irving felt about females in his life.

March 2002 - I thought the "The Devil and Tom Walker" was a very interesting story. Tom was very stingy and greedy, but his wife knew how to deal with his foolish ways. I don't understand how Deacon Peabody ties into the story. He only owns the land on which the devil is trying to chop down trees? Please e-mail me if you understand this. Overall, I found the story enjoyable. Thank you.

Washington Irving (1783 -1859)
Washington Irving was born in New York City into a wealthy merchant family. He was educated privately for the law. But after his return from his first journey abroad, he abandoned his halfhearted study of the law and for almost a decade was variously engaged, in the family business, as staff officer in the War of 1812 (a war between the United States and Great Britain from 1812 to 1815), as contributor to newspapers and magazines, and also tried himself as a writer. The first highly civilized satire in American literature, Salmagundi, was written by Irving together with J. K. Paulding and several other young men. That series of essays appeared in print in 1807 and enjoyed a good deal of popularity. He next threw himself into the completion of his History of New York, told under the name of Diedrich Knickerbocker. Published in 1809, it gave him a reputation as a humorist. When Irving sailed again in 1815 for England on business, he was to remain for seventeen years. After the family business failed, he devoted himself to writing, and the first result was The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., issued in seven parts between 1819 and 1820. Many of the sketches are impressions of English scenes, but six have an American setting, and of these the two best are Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Washington Irving
Washington Irving was born on April 3, 1783, the youngest of eleven children. During his early career, he studied law and travelled widely in Europe. He first began writing in journals and newspapers, and was editor of Analetic magazine from 1812 to 1814. Irving’s first book was a comic history of Dutch New York, which was published in 1809 under the pseudonym "Dietrich Knickerbocker", for which the Knickerbocker school of writers was later named. With the success of a collection of short stories, The Sketch Book Of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., which included “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle,” Irving was able to write full time; the sequel to the Sketch Book, Bracebridge Hall, appeared in 1822. During the years from 1815 to 1832, Irving lived in various places in Europe, where he met Mary Shelley and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and, while staying in Spain, wrote several historical books including two about Christopher Columbus. He returned to New York and was welcomed as the first American writer to receive international acclaim. He settled at Sunnyside manor in Tarrytown, where, except for his time serving as U.S. Ambassador to Spain, he spent the rest of his life. His later works include Mahomet and His Succesors and The Life of George Washington. He died on November 28, 1859, and was buried in Sleepy Hollow, NY.

Portrait of Washington Irving
John Wesley Jarvis, oil on wood panel, 1809. The Jarvis portrait is one of the best known images of the writer, seen here as an author on the brink of literary success. Jarvis captured this image in 1809, a watershed year for the young writer. Diedrich Knickerbocker's A History of New-York was published and acclaimed, serving as the basis for Irving's national reputation. It was also during this year that Irving would experience a great personal tragedy, the death of his fiancee, Matilda Hoffmann.
