Works in the Collection Manuscript Materials Biographies Other Resources Washington Irving , one of the most beloved and influential American writers during the nineteenth century, is remembered today for having written "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." In these stories, as well as in Diedrich Knickerbocker's History of New York , Irving celebrated the folkways of New York's Dutch settlers. Fascinated by European culture, Irving travelled to England in 1815, where he produced The Sketch Book , a collection of sentimental and satiric sketches and stories narrated by Geoffrey Crayon, Gentleman. Following the great success of The Sketch Book , Irving decided to devote himself to authorship and produced a number of histories, travel narratives, and sketches through the rest of his career. Esteemed as an important "literary personage," Irving served as ambassador to Spain. He finally retired to his pastoral retreat Sunnyside in the 1840s, where he received frequent visitations from fellow writers and fans.

The Author's Account of Himself
"I am of this mind with Homer, that as the snaile that crept out of her shel was turned eftsoons into a toad, and thereby was forced to make as stoole to sit on; so the traveller that stragleth from his own country is in a short time transformed into so monstrous a shape, that he is faine to alter his mansion with his manners, and to live where he can, not where he would. Lyly's Euphues I was always fond of visiting new scenes, and observing strange characters and manners. Even when a mere child I began my travels, and made many tours of discovery into foreign parts and unknown regions of my native city, to the frequent alarm of my parents, and the emolument of the town-crier. As I grew into boyhood, I extended the range of my observations. My holiday afternoons were spent in rambles about the surrounding country. I made myself familiar with all its places famous in history or fable. I knew every spot where a murder or robbery had been committed, or a ghost seen. I visited the neighboring villages, and added greatly to my stock of knowledge, by noting their habits and customs, and conversing with their sages and great men. I even journeyed one long summer's day to the summit of the most distant hill, whence I stretched my eye over many a mile of terra incognita, and was astonished to find how vast a globe I inhabited.

American writer of Scottish descent. He grew up in New York, then a town with only 25,000 inhabitants. In 1809 he published a history of the city titled "A History of New-York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, by Dietrich Knickerbocker" in which he satirizes pretentious historians. Irving had also started to study law, but when his beloved Matilda Hoffman died in the same year of tuberculosis, his already delicate health was damaged further and his parents sent him abroad.
He travelled through England, the Netherlands, France and Italy. In 1823 at Dresden, he was infatuated with Emily Foster, the granddaughter of a British count. In 1824 he met Mary shelley in England, but despite the efforts of his friend John Payne he didn't fall for her.
In England (where he spent many years in Birmingham) he met many famous writers. This inspired him to continue his own writing. Sir Walter Scott helped him to publish his "Sketch Book", for which he received 2,000 pounds. The Sketch Book made him famous and he published more sketches in "By Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." (1822)" and "Tales of a Traveller" (1824). Unfortunately the latter work was revceived very badly, causing Irving to stop writing fiction. From then on he wrote mainly history and biography.

Found among the papers of the late Diedrech Knickerbocker. A pleasing land of drowsy head it was,
Of dreams that wave before the half-shut eye;
And of gay castles in the clouds that pass,
Forever flushing round a summer sky.
Castle of Indolence. I recollect that, when a stripling, my first exploit in squirrel-shooting was in a grove of tall walnut-trees that shades one side of the valley. I had wandered into it at noontime, when all nature is peculiarly quiet, and was startled by the roar of my own gun, as it broke the Sabbath stillness around and was prolonged and reverberated by the angry echoes. If ever I should wish for a retreat whither I might steal from the world and its distractions, and dream quietly away the remnant of a troubled life, I know of none more promising than this little valley. Such is the general purport of this legendary superstition, which has furnished materials for many a wild story in that region of shadows; and the spectre is known at all the country firesides, by the name of the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.
