63. Hifi Choice - Review
Overall, however, this is a solid Performer very communicative as one pointedout, it with the tomtoms and plucking sounds in the Janis Ian track, and

Open, spacious, warm, communicative sound and purposeful controls. Some loss of definition and dynamics; can sound forward and raw when pushed.
Power output (W)
Number of inputs for non-vinyl sources: Manufacturer:
Marantz Telephone: Price: Reviewed in issue: Marantz's 'SE' suffix indicates a model which has been enhanced to provide 'audiophile' quality at a still-affordable price. In fact, there was never a straight PM-66, but the PM-66SE is easily the tallest and most bulky of the five contenders here, though its front panel still offers only basic facilities. 'Source direct' claims to shorten the signal path by applying the juice directly to the volume control, bypassing the tape-monitor switch and balance control. The instructions suggest that the signal also bypasses a mono switch, but curiously there isn't one. You do get a headphone socket, though. Inputs are available for a record player (moving magnet only), three line sources and two tape decks. One of the latter supports off-tape monitoring, and there is a tape-dubbing feature thrown in for good measure. The amp can be plumbed into Marantz-branded systems using system-control sockets, which is when the supplied full-system handset comes into its own. It only works volume and muting on the amp. With a claimed 50 Watts available per channel, this amplifier allegedly has the top-quality internal components that the SE suffix implies, and Marantz reckons the layout of the '66SE's circuits has been optimised to give the best possible stereo imagery. Non-indicating push buttons can lead to some confusion about the operating status of the amp unless you look carefully, but this is a minor issue.

He was recently voted the most powerful man in comedy with four Baftas and a international Emmy under his belt. He’s been on screen recently with his weekly show from New York but he’s better known to British audiences for his ‘So Graham Norton’, as well as the annoying Father Noel in the series ‘Father Ted’. After six years with Channel 4 he’s been poached by the BBC to front a Saturday night light entertainment show. He’s compared the two channels to the difference between a night out with your friends or a family Christmas lunch and media critics have pondered how his camp brand of adult humour will translate to mainstream TV. Originally born Graham Walker in Dublin in 1963, he was brought up in the small town of Bandon in West Cork. As a child he loved television describing it as a ‘window to life’ and a world he wanted to be part of. He began an English and French degree at University College Cork but dropped out after his first year and went to America where he lived in a hippy commune in San Francisco.

Parker Scott: Company of Strangers At: Don't Tell Mama
Reviewer: David Roberts for Theatre Reviews Limited [The comments from Parker Scott are from an interview that David Roberts had with the performer recently.]
At one point in his current show "Company of Strangers" at Don't Tell Mama, Parker Scott introduces his band in the following way: "Pretty boy on my left Carl Allocco, Pretty boy on my right Gerry Dieffenbach." It was at that moment that pretty boy Parker Scott redefined "boy band" for all time. Even more significantly, Parker staked a powerful claim on not only the lingua franca but on the human community's right to use the spoken and written word in the most opportune ways.
Claiming power and using power appropriately might be the real themes of Parker Scott's show. Each of the songs in the program focuses on some aspect of the human condition which makes us both somehow connected to one another and yet somehow estranged from one another, a "company of strangers." The resolution of this dichotomous state (if there is one) or, at least, the recognition of the bifurcation is most likely found somewhere on the non-conscious and/or spiritual level. This is the level Parker Scott and his band guide their audiences to in "Company of Strangers" and it is the level that has piqued Parker's interest of late. "I have recently gotten very interested in yoga and have begun taking classes. I find it an incredibly spiritual experience and it is really great just to get inside of yourself to learn and experience who you are and challenge your body, mind, and spirit."

There are some people on this planet who are fortunate enough to go through their entire lives without ever having to know what it feels like to be the new kid in town. Then there are the rest of us, who can quickly identify with the situation transfer student Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) finds herself in minutes into "Mean Girls." "Have you ever walked up to people and realized they were just talking about you?" Cady asks. Anyone who has had the horrible bad luck of having to change high schools will nod in silent sympathy. It's probably condemning "Mean Girls" with faint praise to say that it's undoubtedly the best teen comedy ever adapted from a sociological study. "Saturday Night Live" writer/performer Tina Fey based her screenplay on Rosalind Wiseman's "Queen Bees and Wannabes," and the mix of Fey's tart humor and Wiseman's look into the manners and mindsets of contemporary young women produces a movie that's both extremely funny and insightful. Cady, transplanted by her zoologist parents from the wilds of Africa to the jungles of suburban Chicago, is both lovely and smart, a combination that almost immediately lands her in the no-woman's-land between the popular crowd and the geeks.

Singer/songwriter Janis Ian comes to Chico for the first time By Alan Sheckter SHE LEARNED THE TRUTH AT 17 The first musical artist ever to perform on Saturday Night Live (for its first on-air episode), singer/songwriter and activist Janis Ian comes to Chico for an intimate solo performance at the Chico Women's Club.
Preview: Janis Ian, Chico Women's Club, Friday, Aug. 23, 8 p.m., Tickets: $16-$18 J anis Ian burst onto the music scene as a 16 year-old prodigy in 1967 with "Society's Child," and the Associated Press dubbed her "a white teenager indicting America for its racism and hypocrisy." In the 35 years since, she has been a singer, songwriter, activist and magazine columnist. Next Friday, courtesy of North Valley Productions, she'll visit Chico for the first time. Born Janis Eddy Fink, the singer/songwriter, who can arguably be grouped with a handful of old-wave singer/songwriting women that includes Phoebe Snow, Carole King and Laura Nyro, infuses different subtleties into her songs that set many moods. After the accolades and fame from her earliest work died down, Ian re-surfaced in the mid-'70s with three critically acclaimed records. The first one

While most women write tell-all books about the men they've had and/or known, Sherie Rene Scott has devoted an entire CD to them. Luckily for those men involved, Sherie has limited it to male songwriters whose shows she has been involved in (although her tongue-in-cheek liner notes hysterically imply otherwise). Her album, Men I've Had , features songs by Pete Townsend (whose show, Tommy , provided Sherie with her Broadway debut), Randy Newman ( Faust at La Jolla Playhouse), Kander and Ebb ( Over and Over at Signature Theater), Elton John ( Aida ), and Jonathan Larson ( Rent What is wonderful about the album (aside from Sherie's superb, sensual vocals, which are perfectly complimented by Tim Weil's understated arrangements) is that only one of the songs is from the shows mentioned. Instead, Sherie has wisely chosen songs from the writer's pop catalogues, and performed them in a moderately laid-back manner that sizzles and rocks and the same time. Highlights include an incredibly sensual "Squeezebox" (Pete Townsend); "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters (Elton John/Taupin), which makes her sound like a cross between Laura Nyro and Carole King; the sultry "This Life" (from Kander and Ebb's Over and Over Rent was not the nadir of his talents).

Fiona's Story

I came to London to further train in music and met some record producers through a friend who had been in "Neighbours". We started recording some songs in Berwick St. studios, which is where I began to meet people who would have an influence on learning about song writing and recording. I met a producer Tony Martin and he asked me to sing on his next Album "Hypnotone AI" which was released on Creation records. Tony was also doing mixes for Primal Scream and Stephen Duffy with the Lilac Times.
Paul's Story
I decided that I wanted to know more about the legal side of the music business and enrolled at the Guildhall University onto a law degree. Rob told me that music was too competitive and that Rollo had also given the same advice to his sister DIDO that she should be realistic about her chances. Fair point. But I wasn't going to stop so kept on writing. I felt that I had been involved in a melting pot of influences and surrounded by friends who were putting some good material together. Also, I wasn't going to listen to any more helpful advice about giving up. Paul and I still had the material and more and it kept coming. We needed to record the songs properly but didn't have the resources or know how. Fortune arranged a chance meeting with Simon .... Transit A.M was then formed.

The Ying Quartet-the only all-sibling ensemble in professional classical music today-believes in the relevance of great art music to everyday American culture. For this reason, they love to perform outside the usual venues: in shopping malls, barbershops, libraries, hospitals-wherever they can share the excitement, power and love of music with a community.
