Janis Ian - "Don't bother me, and I won't bother you!" Janis Ian approvedly is one of the greatest female songwriters on planet earth. Since almost four decades she records albums, works as a musician, tours – always brimming over with ideas and creativity. Her latest album, including one guitar-instrumental and several wonderful new songs, is called "Billie´s Bones": Billie stands for Billie Holliday, of whom Janis had been a big fan from the beginning... Janis Ian Carina Prange talked to her via E-Mail. Janis: I would hope that an artist can be creative in whatever field/milieu they're working in at the time. For instance, I'm self-managed, and I think I'm probably a lot more creative about it than most managers. And no, I don't think behaving in a business-like manner, or being a boss, conflicts with creativity at all. Carina: As a musician, how much does one have to love the different roles and tasks you have to do concerning your art? Other people involved, like managers or the record companies, how much can one trust them to take care of their part of the process?

Born: 07 April 1951 in New York
Pop, Composer, Performer, Singer A singer/songwriter both celebrated and decried for her pointed handling of taboo topics, Janis Ian enjoyed one of the more remarkable second acts in music history; after first finding success as a teen, her career slumped, only to enter a commercial resurgence almost a decade later.
Born Janis Eddy Fink in a Bronx hospital, she changed her name while still a child. She had a successful singing career in the 1960s and 1970s. She wrote and sang her first hit single at age 15, the song "Society's Child", which told the story of an interracial romance forbidden by the narrator's parents. Her most successful single was "At Seventeen", released in 1975, a bittersweet commentary on adolescent cruelty and teenage angst, as reflected upon from the maturity of adulthood. She has also managed a sustained career as a songwriter.
She is an outspoken critic of the RIAA, a record industry organization which she sees as acting against the interests of musicians and consumers. As such, she has willingly released several of her songs, including the popular "Walking in the Rain", for free downloading from her website.

Hunger , her debut album for Windham Hill Records, is a showcase for one of the most important composer-performers of our time. Almost alone among her contemporaries, Janis Ian has found a way to translate her extraordinary gifts into every era of modern American popular song. She stands unique as a talent that has received Grammy Award nominations in the '60s, the '70s, the '80s and the '90s. As the performances on Hunger show so eloquently, Janis Ian is moving toward the millennium in full command of her skills as an instrumentalist. Away from the singer of "Society's Child" and the hypersensitive wallflower of "At Seventeen," she still creates extraordinary social commentary songs. "Searching for America"

Janis Ian: Downloading Take II
Dave Winer 's discovered that Janis Ian has posted "FALLOUT - a follow up to The Internet Debacle" a sequel to her excellent " Internet Debacle " article. She's again making easily understood arguements, including real numbers from her own site, for allowing free and/or inexpensive downloading of music files. Ms. Ian writes:
Do I still believe downloading is not harming the music industry? Yes, absolutely. Do I think consumers, once the industry starts making product they want to buy, will still buy even though they can download? Yes. Water is free, but a lot of us drink bottled water because it tastes better. You can get coffee at the office, but you're likely to go to Starbucks or the local espresso place, because it tastes better. When record companies start making CD's that offer consumers a reason to buy them, as illustrated by Kevin's email at the end of this article, we will buy them. The songs may be free on line, but the CD's will taste better.
It's a thoughtful, well written piece by someone who's a performer and a consumer. Go

JANIS IAN - SOCIETY’S MUSICAL POET
By Esther Lynn
Although she started playing piano when she was only two-and-a-half, had established a good relationship with the guitar by 10, and wrote her first song at 12, no one could have predicted that by the time she was a teenager Janis Eddy Fink would have a self-penned song on the Billboard charts.
Anyone old enough to have listened to music from the late ’60s probably remembers Janis Ian, the professional name this gifted young lady chose at the beginning of her career. Only 15 years old when she had her first hit record, Ian created an avalanche of controversy with her musical story of teenage interracial love in the song, “Society’s Child.”
For those who are not familiar with Ian‘s life, personally or musically, here are some of the impressive facts. Born in 1951, Janis grew up on a farm in South New Jersey. In 1975, “At Seventeen,” a song of juvenile angst, hit the charts, selling more than a million copies and finding a home on Billboard’s Top 40 list for 14 weeks. This “great American troubadour” carries the distinction of appearing as the very first musical guest on TV’s “Saturday Night Live.” Over the last 30 years, Ian’s songs have been recorded by artists such as Chet Atkins, Charles Aznavour, Joan Baez, Glen Campbell, Cher, Chicago, Barbara Cook, Sheena Easton, Roberta Flack (“Jesse”), Amy Grant, Lee Greenwood, Ute Lemper, Kathy Mattea, John Mellencamp, Bette Midler, Puff Daddy, Diane Schuur, Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield and Mel Torme. She has been a Grammy nominee seven times, winning twice. In 2001, the song “Society’s Child” was entered permanently into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

This is Janis Ian's second album from her re-emergence in the early to mid-'70s as one of the genre's most inspired and original singer/songwriters. While this title houses Ian's biggest international hit, the confessional "At Seventeen," the entire effort combines her honest and confessional lyrics with an equally engaging blend of pop/rock and definite jazz and blues. She assembled much of the same ensemble that had worked on her previous long-player, Stars (1975), and much of the materia... More

A Woman of Many Firsts
More magic from Janis Ian by Susan McMillan It was 1999 when I first met Janis Ian. The Alaskan nights were getting long and cold. It was an intimate concert in a rustic bar with a
disruptive sound system. I went to the show because, honestly, there's
not much to do in Fairbanks as winter approaches.
I remembered the singer from her teen-angst hit, "At Seventeen." I expected a folk singer strumming old tunes. Instead, I met an artist who is bold, outspoken, talented, and has been that way for 50 years. Long before Melissa, long before the Indigo Girls, long before k.d. lang, this gifted kid taught herself to play piano and guitar and stormed the music industry at the age of fifteen. She was featured in Life, Time, and Newsweek and appeared on the Tonight Show. She received death threats for her controversial hit song, "Society's Child," and by seventeen, she'd had a breakdown, and she was called a "washed-up-has-been."
Janis Ian has lived her life with an intensity to be admired, with several significant firsts. She was one of the first to be involuntarily 'outed,' back in 1976 with Elton John and David Bowie. She headlined the first NGLTF AIDS benefit in New York. She was the first woman to receive five Grammy nominations in one year. She was the first musical guest on Saturday Night Live. She is the first to document the making of a CD on her website.

Artist: "JANIS IAN" Title: "HUNGER" Label: Windham Hill Release Date: Rating: Born in 1951, "Janis Ian," like many of us, grew up in that hippie world of "free love" and "peace," but even at the age of 15 was able to stick a pin in the side of an uptight society with her ballad of interracial love, "Society's Child." Looking back at that time Janis jokingly says, "I made the right wing unhappy singing about dating the wrong kind of people. I made the left wing unhappy because I ended the relationship and made the folk world unhappy because I used drums on the record!" It wasn't as humorous back then, but it launched a career that spans thirty years, with Grammy nominations in all four decades from the 60's to the 90's.
Her first self-titled album came out in 1967 and garnered her the first of nine Grammy nominations. The seventies saw three albums, "Stars," "Between The Lines," and "Aftertones." The first gave us "Jesse" which Roberta Flack turned into a charttopper, the second produced "At Seventeen" and her first Grammy. The third gave us Janis in the company of Phoebe Snow and Odetta, a trio of critically acclaimed songbirds.
As the eighties opened she scored with a disco hit "Fly Too High" from the Jodie Foster movie "Foxes," then virtually disappeared from the pop scene for nearly a decade beset by health and financial problems (due to corrupt business managers).
