Aldous (Leonard) Huxley
Author
Aldous Huxley was here for an endowed chair when this was taken. The powers that be on campus were very worried about his health, because he just wasn't eating. His beautiful hands are just skin and bones, and his clothes could hold another person. He had slipped into an intellectual trance and was fading away. He wasn't even bothering with his laundry. So the University paid a student to live with him and take care of him. I was ecstatic about having the opportunity to do his portrait. During the sitting he began talking about a book he had just finished, the 180 degrees counterpart of Brave New World . We spent a wonderful afternoon talking about what an utopian culture would really be like, and he said that the only thing he had left to do was to choose a title for the book. The tragedy is that his house in Westwood later burned, and the only copies of his completed manuscript were destroyed. He had to be physically restrained from trying to rescue them. GPB

An extraordinary man in an extraordinary age, writer Aldous Leonard Huxley (1894-1963) brought to his work a strong sense of the world into which he was born amid the rarefied privilege of a distinguished English family transformed by a wicked, probing intelligence and a restless soul.
Huxley's grandfather was the eminent biologist and writer Thomas Huxley, who helped Darwin realize the theory of evolution, and his mother was the niece of the poet Matthew Arnold. (Huxley's brother Julian also became an esteemed writer and their half-brother Andrew won a 1963 Nobel Prize in physiology.) When vision problems dashed his hopes of studying medicine, Huxley turned to writing and became associated with the magazine Aetheneum. He enjoyed success early, poking fun at the pretensions of society in such satirical novels as Crome Yellow and Antic Hay. As a young man, he spent considerable time in the finest intellectual company Virginia Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, Bertrand Russell and by his early 30s was one of England's most important new writers.

Huxley the famous scientist and supporter of Darwin's evolution theory, father Leonard the literary editor, and brother Julian the prominent biologist. His main claim to fame is always listed as the science fiction novel Brave New World. (The game Trivial Pursuit even has an answer that mistakenly attributes the origin of the phrase "brave new world" to him.) But in the first half of the twentieth century Aldous Huxley was considered one of the great intellects of the era, as he produced a wide range of novels, travel books, histories, poems, plays, and essays on philosophy, arts, religion and psychology. The 1960s saw a resurgence of interest in Huxley's later works on mysticism, drugs, sex and utopianism. Today his early literary novels are still studied, though perhaps not read by the intelligent public as they once were. In some ways this is too bad, as the concerns that his "novels of ideas" raised are still with us. However his characters' statement of those ideas is somewhat dated and their aristocratic and artistic milieus are difficult to identify with today. If you can get past that though, you may find his best novels quite provocative—and viciously funny in places.

Biography Novelist and essayist, born in Godalming, Surrey, SE England, U.K., the grandson of T.h. Huxley. He studied at Oxford, lived mainly in Italy in the 1920's (where he met and befriended D.H. Lawrence) and moved to California in 1937. His early writing included poetry, short stories, and literary journalism, but his reputation was made with his satirical novels Crome Yellow (1921) and Antic Hay (1923). Later novels include Point Counter Point (1928) and, his best-known work, Brave New World (1932), where he warns of the dangers of dehumanization in a scientific age. His later writing became more mystical in character, as in Eyeless in Gaza (1936) and Time Must Have a Stop (1944), while Island (1962) is an optimistic Utopia. Huxley's death on November 22, 1963 went without notice being outshined by the event of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. See also http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/ahuxley.htm

Historic Humanist Series
Aldous Leonard Huxley
July 1998 Aldous Leonard Huxley was born on July 26, 1894, into a family that included Thomas Henry Huxley, the great biologist who helped develop the theory of evolution. When Huxley was 16 and a student, an eye illness made him nearly blind. He recovered enough vision to go on to Oxford University and graduate with honors, but not enough to fight in World War I. Huxley's emphasis on ideas and his skill as an essayist cannot hide one fact: The books he wrote that are most read and best remembered today are all novels Corm Yellow Antic Hay , and Point Counter Point from the 1920s, Brave New World and After Many a Summer Dies the Swan from the 1930s. In 1959 the American Academy of Arts and Letters gave him the Award of Merit for the Novel, a prize given every five years; earlier recipients had been Hemingway, Mann, and Dreiser. The range of Huxley's interests can be seen from his note that his "preliminary research" for Island included "Greek history, Polynesian anthropology, translations from Sanskrit and Chinese of Buddhist texts, scientific papers on pharmacology, neurophysiology, psychology and education, together with novels, poems, critical essays, travel books, political commentaries and conversations with all kinds of people, from philosophers to actresses, from patients in mental hospitals to tycoons in Rolls-Royces...." He used similar, though probably fewer, sources for Brave New World He died November 22, 1963, the same day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. He was cremated, and his ashes were buried in his parents' grave in England.
