Philosopher, social critic, and author of books such as his most famous, Brave New World , Aldous Huxley was born and educated in England and moved to the California in the 1930's. Becoming ever more critical of Western civilization and the dehumanizing character of technology, Huxley became drawn to Eastern philosophy and religion and to mysticism. Merton was influenced early on by Huxley though his book, Ends and Means . Similar views on technology, Eastern philosophy, and mysticism appear in Merton's thinking, as well. (Source:

ALDOUS HUXLEY: QUOTES
"Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." - Aldous Huxley The only completely consistent people are the dead. - Aldous Huxley There's only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self. So you have to begin there, not outside, not on other people. That comes afterwards, when you have worked on your own corner. I wanted to change the world. But I have found that the only thing one can be sure of changing is oneself. From their experience or from the recorded experience of others (history), men learn only what their passions and their metaphysical prejudices allow them to learn. Folly is often more cruel in the consequences than malice can be in the intent. To us, the moment 8:17 A.M. means something - something very important, if it happens to be the starting time of our daily train. To our ancestors, such an odd eccentric instant was without significance - did not even exist. In inventing the locomotive, Watt and Stevenson were part inventors of time. After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is Music.

, English novelist and critic, best known for his dystopian novel Brave New World (1931). Besides novels he published travel books, histories, poems, plays, and essays on philosophy, arts, sociology, religion and morals.
Aldous Huxley was born in Godalming, Surrey on July 26, 1894, into a well-to-do upper-middle-class family. His father, Leonard Huxley, was a biographer, editor, and poet. He first studied at Eton College, Berkshire (1908-13). When Huxley was fourteen his mother died. At the age of 16 Huxley suffered an attack of keratitis punctata and became for a period of about 18 months totally blind. By using special glasses and one eye recovered sufficiently he was able to read and he also learned Braille. Despite a condition of near-blindness, Huxley continued his studies at Balliol College, Oxford (1913-15), receiving his B.A. in English in 1916. Unable to pursue his chosen career as a scientist - or fight in World War on the front - Huxley turned to writing. His first collection of poetry appeared in 1916 and two more volumes followed by 1920.

Aldous Huxley Quotes
Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored. The vast majority of human beings dislike and even dread all notions with which they are not familiar. Hence it comes about that at their first appearance innovators have always been derided as fools and madmen. Real progress is progress in charity, all other advances being secondary thereto. Maybe this world is another planet's hell. Experience is not what happens to a man, it is what a man does with what happens to him. There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving and that's your own self. That all men are equal is a proposition to which, at ordinary times, no sane individual has ever given his assent. The humanity of men and women is inversely proportional to their numbers. A man may be a pessimistic determinist before lunch and an optimistic believer in the will's freedom after it. What we feel and think and are is to a great extent determined by the state of our ductless glands and viscera. The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm.

Huxley, Aldous Leonard Huxley, Aldous Leonard, 1894-1963, English author; grandson of T.H. HUXLEY. After writing critical essays and symbolist poetry, he turned to the novel. Crome Yellow (1921), Antic Hay (1923), and Point Counter Point (1928) all depict social decadence. Brave New World (1932) describes a nightmarish 25th-cent. Utopia . Other works include Eyeless in Gaza (1936) and Ape and Essence (1948). In later years he was strongly interested in mysticism and Eastern philosophy. Huxley also published many short stories and essays. "Religion is for people who have not yet had a spiritual experience." "That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history has to teach" ("Case of Voluntary Ignorance" (1959)) Aldous Leonard Huxley was born in 1894, in Godalming in Surrey to an intellectual family. He was the grandson of Thomas Henry Huxley, the famous biologist and colleague of Darwin. He was also the great-nephew of Matthew Arnold, the brother of scientist and writer Julian Huxley, and the nephew of the best-selling novelist Mrs Humphry Ward. He attended Eton, during which time his mother died and he developed a serious disease of the eyes that left him partially blind for the rest of his life. These circumstances left the young Huxley unable to pursue the career in medicine as he had intended and instead he took a degree in English Literature at Balliol College, Oxford. During the war, he got to know a number of literary figures including Lady Ottoline Morrell. Huxley became a journalist in 1919, having already published three books of poetry, writing for the

Author Info: Aldous Huxley
Welcome to a future where everybody's happy. Independent thought and feelings have been banished and genetic engineering, brain washing and drugs keep the population docile and comfortable. But several characters dare to ask the question, "Wouldn't you like to be free to be happy in your own way?" Huxley has isolated the fundamental conflict in Human Historythe conflicting impulses towards Security and Freedom. In the Brave New World, the impulse towards Security has won and there is no Freedom.
