HUNTINGTON, Ellsworth [1876-1947] American explorer and geographer
Relationship Cousin
HUNTINGTON family ODT Contents: On returning from Turkey he carried on graduate work for two years at Harvard, and then went with the well-known geographer Professor W. M. Davis, to Russian Turkestan, as a part of the Pumpelly Expedition of the Carnegic Institution of Washington. After the main party returned home, he traveled with the Khirghiz across the Tian Shen Mountains to Chinese Turkestan. Returning by way of the Alai Mountains he was Page 488 joined by a Russian official, Yanchevctski, and the two made a journey to Seistan, at the corner where Afghanistan and Baluchistan join Persia. They traveled along the Perso-Afghan border in a most lawless region which is under the rule of neither the Persians nor the Afghans. They tried to enter Afghanistan at two or three points, but in each case were summarily put out by Afghan soldiers. After spending the winter in Persia, Mr. Huntington joined the second Pumpelly expedition and assisted in excavations at Anau and Merv on the borders of the Transcaspian desert. After a stay of only four months in America, during which he wrote half of a volume entitled "Explorations in Turkestan," Mr. Huntington went to India in company with Mr. Robert L. Barrett, and crossed the Himalayas and the Karakornn plateau to Chinese Turkestan. He then spent a year alone in the deserts of Chinese Turkestan, exploring ancient ruins and studying the life of the people. During the winter he crossed an absolutely unexplored portion of the Lop desert, a vast plain of rock salt broken into blocks which stick up two or three feet. At a point 150 miles from the nearest village the camels strayed away in pursuit of wild camels. Only the energy of a native camelman in following the animals twenty-five miles by moonlight saved the party from almost certain destruction. From Chinese Turkestan the route back to civilization was through the depression of Turfan, which, although in the heart of Asia, lies below sea level, to the Siberian railroad at Omsk.

It was his mission to determine "step by step the process by which geologic structure, topographic form, and the present and past nature of the climate have shaped man's progress, moulded his history; and thus played an incalculable part in the development of a system of thought which could scarcely have arisen under any other physical circumstances." He explained the results of his research in Palestine and Its Transformation published by Houghton Mifflin in 1911 and in a series of articles which appeared in Harper's Magazine in 1910, titled A Canvas Boat on the Dead Sea, Beyond the Dead Sea, The Fallen Queen of the Desert, and Across the Ghor to the Land of Og.

of Western Geography Ellsworth Huntington (18761947) was the American Geographerwho was most widely known among educated people throughout the world.
    http://www.beloit.edu/~libhome/Archives/acoll/alum/huntington.html
Ellsworth Huntington Excerpt from Social Education VOl. XXI No.1 January 1957: Founders of Western Geography
"Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947) was the American Geographer who was most widely known among educated people throughout the world. He wrote 29 books, parts of a score more, and hundereds of articles, many of which appealed to thinkers in one or more of several sciences, and in history, sociology, and population studies. Huntington's writings appealed because he took great pains to write attractively, and because he presented a succession of thought-provoking theories and generalizations. He studied with especial intensity weather and climate, their influences and changes, and greatly increased public recognition of their great significance. Huntington's books, especially, Pulse of Asia, Civilization and Climate, The Human Habitat, West of the Pacific, and Mainsprings of Civilization were widely read. Principals of Human Geography, a college text of which he was the senior author, has been widely useful and has been widely enjoyed by many students to an extent that few textbooks are. He also co-authored a high school and a grade school text. Huntington did much field work in the West, especially on climatic changes, partly with the help of an extended study of tree rings. His The Climatic Factor as Illustrated in Arid America (Carnegie Institution Publication 192, 1915, 341 p.) reflects a vast amount of field work in the West. He was at Yale University for 40 years. By many, Huntington was rated in his later years as the world's greatest geographer. He certainly aroused more interest in geography on the part of more people than any other geographer."

Choose the right answers and mark them by blackening the corresponding letters on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington(1876-1947), concluded from other men's work and his own among people in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer. Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Fall is the next-best season, then, winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.
