    Writings on Religion
David Hume ranks among the most influential philosophers in the field of the philosophy of religion. He criticised the standard proofs for God's existence, traditional notions of God's nature and divine governance, the connection between morality and religion, and the rationality of belief in miracles. He also advanced theories on the origin of popular religious beliefs, grounding such notions in human psychology rather than in rational argument or divine revelation. The larger aim of his critique was to disentangle philosophy from religion and thus allow philosophy to pursue its ends without either rational over-extension or psychological corruption. Although we find religious themes throughout Hume's publications, the discussion here are largely restricted to six items: (1) "Of Miracles", (2) "Of a Particular Providence and of a Future State", (3) "The Natural History of Religion", (4) Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion , (5) "Of Suicide", and, (6) "Of the Immortality of the Soul."

    Moral Theory
Hume's moral theory is of lasting importance in the history of moral philosophy both for its originality and for its influence on later moral theories. Hume introduced the term "utility" into our moral vocabulary, and his theory is the immediate forerunner to the classic utilitarian views of Bentham and Mill. Hume is famous for the position that we cannot derive ought from is that is, the view that statements of moral obligation cannot simply be deduced from statements of fact. Some contemporary moral philosophers see Hume as an early proponent of the metaethical view that moral judgments principally express our feelings. What is perhaps less well-known is that Hume's moral theory is the first in modern philosophy to be completely secular, without reference to God's will, a divine creative plan, or an afterlife. Hume also directly argues that key moral values are matters of social convention. These views spawned both praise and indignation in writings of commentators over the years.

    - David Hume (1711-1776)
Born in Edinburgh into a Calvinist family in 1711, Hume entered Edinburgh University at the age of 12 to study law, leaving less than three years later, having concentrated more on his own interests than his course work. After a brief business career in Bristol, he moved to France and took up writing. His development of philosophical ideas had been influenced by the concepts of science and observation. His first major book "A Treatise of Human Nature" in 1739 was not an immediate success and he returned to Scotland as a companion to the Marquis of Annandale in the Borders. His next book "Essays, Moral and Political" in 1741 was more successful. Hume proclaimed the dominance of human reason over religious faith and, at a time when religious dogma was followed by most people without question, he was a self-proclaimed atheist. He was thus not able to become professor of philosophy at Edinburgh University because of his "anti-religious" views. Mixing a diplomatic career in France with further writing, his "An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding" had an influence on Adam Smith. While in Paris (as Secretary to the British Embassy from 1763-66) he became popular with French society and helped the writer Rousseau. Hume returned to Edinburgh in 1769 and mixed with the intellectuals of the capital during the phase described as "The Scottish Enlightenment". His associates included the economist

    David Hume
David Hume (1711-1776), Scottish philosopher and historian and, with Adam Smith and Thomas Reid among others, one of the most important figures in the Scottish Enlightenment. Hume is sometimes regarded as the third and most radical of the so-called British Empiricists, after John Locke and George Berkeley (though the latter was Irish); this bracketing of Hume, Locke , and Berkeley , though traditional, is misguided in a variety of ways, in particular because it ignores the major influence on Hume of various Francophone writers such as Pierre Bayle and various other figures on the Anglophone intellectual landscape such as Isaac Newton , Samuel Clarke, Francis Hutcheson, and Joseph Butler. He is most famous for promoting a thoroughgoing Scepticism less well-known, however, but just as important, was his promotion of Naturalism. Trends in Hume historiography have oscillated between emphasizing the sceptical side of Hume (Reid, Greene, the logical positivists) and the naturalist side (Kemp-Smith, Stroud, and to an inane degree Galen Strawson). Hume was born in Edinburgh and attended the university there. At first he considered a career in law, but came to have, in his words, "an insurmountable aversion to everthing but the pursuits of philosophy and general learning." He did some self-study in France, where he also completed A Treatise of Human Nature at the age of 26. When published in England (1739-40) it received next to no attention. Hume famously wrote that it "fell dead-born from the press." After a few years of service to various political and military figures, Hume returned to his studies. After deciding that the problem with the Treatise was style not content, he reworked some of the material for more popular consumption in

HUME: AN OVERVIEW Hume was a Scottish empiricistwell known for his skepticism and sharpness of thought. Being a freethinker, he was easily critical of thinking which rested on no other basis than traditional argument. He also was sharply critical of thinking which did not arise from the observation of actual behavior (empiricism) but which was merely speculative in nature (rationalism). Yet at the same time he was a quietly confident and serene individual who was deeply comfortable with the worldand rather conservative in his social and political views. Even his own skepticism was tempered by his understanding of the human need for some kind of underpinning of custom or tradition in life. His major philosophical thrust was against the rationalists who were prone to build great intellectual edifices on the foundations of some "self-evident" truths. He considered such intellectualism as being highly dangerouslikely to lead to polemical excesses (as the highly intellectually charged revolutions of France in 1789 and Russia in 1917 were certainly to prove in the years after Hume). To Hume, customwhich was the sum of actual human experiencewas the only healthy foundation on which to build human life. Being an empiricist, he was impressed with the patterns by which people actually lived out their lives. Hume felt that we should pay close attention to the human record of our actual or "natural" (as he put it) behavior in order to draw conclusions about life. Hume on the other hand was most unimpressed by the great intellectual "spins" that philosophers wove around hypothetical behavior in building their great systems of thought. For Hume reality was in the doing, not in the hypothesizing about life.
