69. From Darwin To The Human Genome Project
From Darwin to the Human Genome Project This quest for the location of human genes is referred to as the Human Genome Project (HGP).

Penni Carmosino ¥ California State University, Chico Index Previous Paper Next Paper From Darwin to the Human Genome Project
Since Darwin's publication of On the Origin of Species the world of biology has made many advances. These advances in biology, specifically in genetic research, would not have been possible without the use of the microscope. Improvements in the microscope lead to the ability to actually view reproductive processes, which eventually lead to genetic research. Upon the discovery of the structure of DNA the birth of the Human Genome Project occurred. Although the intentions of this project were to better society, capitalism and prejudice have twisted this project into something that our society is not prepared to deal with. This paper traces the evolutionary steps of genetic research from Darwin to Watson and Crick. Advancements made by the Human Genome Project will also be discussed in addition to problems that society faces as a result of genetic research.
Introduction
For the past few decades molecular scientists have been arduously working on a project that has the potential to revolutionize the world. The goal of this project is to determine the precise location and molecular details of all of the genes and interconnecting segments that make up the human chromosomes. This quest for the location of human genes is referred to as the Human Genome Project (HGP). The HGP is the most promising yet controversial undertaking ever attempted by the biological sciences.

Preliminary Findings of The Human Genome Projects
Index to this page Shortly after their press conferences, the two groups that have been striving for several years to map the human genome published their findings:
  • the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium (IHGSC) in the 15 February 2001 issue of Nature
  • Celera Genomics , a company in Rockville, Maryland, in the 16 February issue of Science
These achievements are monumental, but before we examine them, let us be clear as to what they are not.
What has not been found
  • Neither group has determined the complete sequence of the human genome. Each of our chromosomes is a single molecule of DNA. Some day the sequence of base pairs in each will be known from one end to the other. But not yet. Many gaps remain to be filled. What they have done is present a series of draft sequences that represent about 90% (probably the most interesting 90%) of the genome.
  • Even taken together, the results do not yet make it possible to provide an accurate count of the number of protein-encoding genes in our genome (in contrast to such genomes as those of

Human Genome Sequencing at the GSC The Genome Sequencing Center is a leading contributor to the Human Genome Project (HGP) . Launched in the US 1990 and jointly funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Energy, it is part of an ongoing international effort to determine the complete nucleotide sequence of human DNA and to identify the genes therein. Parallel goals include similar efforts for model organisms used extensively in genetic studies, development of technology to support these objectives, and examination of the ethical, legal and social issues implicit in human genome research. All sequence data generated by the Human Genome Project is freely available for unrestricted use. The announcement of the completion of the draft sequence of the human genome in June, 2000, and the subsequent publication in Nature in February, 2001 , marked an important milestone for the Human Genome Project. For the first time, scientists were able to view the features of our own instruction manual in relation both to one another and to the whole. The construction of a clone-based map and subsequent clone-by-clone shotgun sequencing proved an effective strategy for resolving the complexities of human sequence. Systematically selecting clones to sequence from the tiling path provided by the map facilitated coordination of the international effort. The resulting draft sequence provides an overview of 90% of the genome.

77. Origins Of The Human Genome Project
Origins of the Human Genome Project. Robert Mullan CookDeegan*. Introduction. 9 Charles DeLisi, The Human Genome Project, 76 Am. Scientist 488 (1988).
http://www.fplc.edu/risk/vol5/spring/cookdeeg.htm
Origins of the Human Genome Project
Robert Mullan Cook-Deegan* Introduction The earliest and most obvious applications of genome research are tests for genetic disorders, but less obvious diagnostic uses may prove at least as important, such as forensic uses to establish identity (to determine paternity, to link suspects of physical evidence of rape or murder, or as a molecular "dog-tag" in the military). Genome research also promises to find genes expeditiously, making the genetic approach attractive as a first step in the study not only of complex diseases, but also of normal biological function. Each new gene is a potential target for drug development to fix it when broken, to shut it down, to attenuate or amplify its expression, or to change its product, usually a protein. Finding a gene gives investigators a molecular handle on problems that have proven intractable. Faith that the systematic analysis of DNA structure will prove to be a powerful research tool underlies the rationale behind the genome project. Faith that that scientific power will translate to products, jobs and wealth underlies the recent substantial investments in private genome research startup companies and the diversification of pharmaceutical and agricultural research firms into genome research. The human genome project was borne of technology, grew into a science bureaucracy in the U.S. and throughout the world and is now being transformed into a hybrid academic and commercial enterprise. The next phase of the project promises to veer more sharply toward commercial application, exploiting the rapidly growing body of knowledge about DNA structure to the pursuit of practical benefits.
